    Keywords: Hydraulics ; Hydrology
Abstract: Advances in Hydroscience, Volume 8, provides an overview of the state of knowledge in hydroscience. The book contains six chapters and opens with a study on seiches-a phenomenon that frequently occurs in large enclosed bodies of water and that can result in serious destruction of shore structures and bring sudden death to innocent swimmers. This phenomenon bears certain resemblances to the tsunamis and storm surges over the open sea. Subsequent chapters deal with the basic principles underlying the techniques in isotope hydrology; statistical models for ocean waves and wave forces; fluvial sediment transport; impulsive waves; and channel networks. This contribution will prove particularly useful to hydrologists, since most work in this field has been done by physicists or other non-hydrologists

Keywords: Electromagnetic interactions ; Field theory (Physics)
Abstract: Interactions between Electromagnetic Fields and Matter deals with the principles and methods that can amplify electromagnetic fields from very low levels of signals. This book discusses how electromagnetic fields can be produced, amplified, modulated, or rectified from very low levels to enable these for application in communication systems. This text also describes the properties of matter and some phenomenological considerations to the reactions of matter when an action of external fields results in a polarization of the particle system and changes the bonding forces existing in the matter. This book considers the above phenomena in detail by explaining matter as a conglomeration of charged mass points in the electromagnetic field. Quantum mechanics and Maxwell's theory can then account for the precise description of the interactions between the electromagnetic fields and matter. This book then describes special processes such as 1) the static and quasistatic interactions and 2) dynamic processes, particularly the resonance process. This text also defines a general form for electric and magnetic reactions using the generalized field equation. This book also cites the anharmonic oscillator and the single spin as different examples of electric and magnetic dipole interactions. This text is suitable for electrical engineers, radio technicians, physicists whose work is in quantum mechanics, and engineers interested in electro-magnetism theory

    Keywords: Industrial location--Great Britain
Abstract: This title, first published in 1973, covers the period of 1959 to 1968. The study suggests that government policies had very little effect on the employment structures of the sub-regions at this time, despite government intervention and policy objectives in Great Britain to reduce levels of unemployment in the depressed regions and curb congestion in the Midland and South East England conurbations. Instead, regional employment structures seemed to be determined by what was happening to industries at a national level. This study will be of interest to economists, planners, regional scientists and geographers, as well as students in these fields

    Keywords: Eightfold way (Nuclear physics)
Abstract: Unitary Symmetry and Elementary Particles discusses the role of symmetry in elementary particle physics. The book reviews the theory of abstract groups and group representations including Eigenstates, cosets, conjugate classes, unitary vector spaces, unitary representations, multiplets, and conservation laws. The text also explains the concept of Young Diagrams or Young Tableaux to prove the basis functions of the unitary irreducible representations of the unitary group SU(n). The book defines Lie groups, Lie algebras, and gives some examples of these groups. The basis vectors of irreducible unitary representations of Lie groups constitute a multiplet, which according to Racah (1965) and Behrends et al. (1962) can have properties of weights. The text also explains the properties of Clebsch-Gordan coefficients and the Wigner-Eckart theorem. SU(3) multiplets have members classified as hadrons (strongly interacting particles), of which one characteristic show that the mass differences of these members have some regular properties. The Gell-Mann and Ne-eman postulate also explains another characteristic peculiar to known multiplets. The book describes the quark model, as well as, the uses of the variants of the quark model. This collection is suitable for researchers and scientists in the field of applied mathematics, nuclear physics, and quantum mechanics

    Keywords: Plasma turbulence
Abstract: An Introduction to the Theory of Plasma Turbulence is a collection of lectures given by the author at Culham laboratory. The book deals with developments on the theory of plasma turbulence. The author describes plasma properties in the turbulent regions as mostly non-linear in nature, and notes that these properties can be regarded as a universal spectrum independent of any type of instability. The text then discusses the general problems of the theory of plasma turbulence. The author also shows that elementary excitation of ""dressed"" particles have a finite lifetime associated with non-linear interactions. The book then discusses the excitation of ion-sound turbulence using different processes, for example, shock waves; the text also analyzes the kind of non-linear interactions present in such energy transfer. The author also explains the Langmuir plasma oscillations - a typical collective plasma motion that can be excited using different types of mechanism such as an electron beam. The book then describes the electromagnetic properties of turbulent plasma and relates the state of turbulent plasma as a natural occurrence in the universe. The book notes the problem of cosmic rays, not as an energy transfer to faster particles, but as an energy distribution between particles. The text will prove valuable for nuclear physicists, scientists, and academicians in the field of quantum mechanics

    Person(s): Garvey, Gerald
Keywords: USA ; Constitutional history United States
Abstract: Uniquely blending anthropological and exchange theory, Professor Garvey offers a new interpretation of American constitutional development. His thesis: judicial reliance on a limited stock of received forms has inhibited the development of new concepts that could adequately reflect fundamental changes in society. Professor Garvey reviews the history of the Supreme Court in light of the "bricolage" theory. The Court, by interpreting the Constitution to effect laissez-faire and Social Darwinism, helped bring about a society ostensibly patterned on the buyer-seller model, marked by free exchange and "liberty of contract." New departures by the Court in the areas of free speech and criminal justice, according to the author, evidence a recognition of present inequities and a determination to change them; but to the extent the Court remains loyal to a buyer-seller model, it practices an unrealistic jurisprudence. Keywords: Industrie ; Big business Pakistan ; Industrial organization Pakistan ; Industries Pakistan
Abstract: Although observers of the Pakistani economy are well aware that a small number of family groups, popularly called "the twenty-two families," dominates the industrial structure of the country, the actual effects of this concentration of economic power on income distribution and on other areas of widespread social and political concern arc less well understood. In this important work, Lawrence J. White uses the concepts of industrial organization analysis to achieve an overall view of the problems stemming from the marked industrial concentration in Pakistan. After discussing the economic effects of industrial concentration as they apply generally to less developed countries, Professor White reviews the Pakistani experience, estimating the overall concentration of power that exists in manufacturing, banking, and insurance. Following an estimate of the extent of concentration in individual markets, he examines the origins of this concentration of power and analyzes its economic and noneconomic effects in Pakistan. The author concludes with a review of the policies that Pakistan has pursued in dealing with industrial concentration and suggests new courses of action for the future. Originally published in 1974. Abstract: Solid State Phenomena explores the fundamentals of the structure and their influence on the properties of solids. This book is composed of five chapters that focus on the electrical and thermal conductivities of crystalline solids. Chapter 1 describes the nature of solids, particularly metals and crystalline materials. This chapter also presents a model to evaluate crystal structure, the forces between atom pairs, and the mechanism of plastic and elastic deformation. Chapter 2 demonstrates random vibrations of atoms in a solid using a one-dimensional array, while Chapter 3 examines the resistance of tungsten under various temperatures and measures its temperature coefficient of resistance. Chapter 4 surveys the increase in the number of conducting electrons in a solid when illuminated with light of sufficiently high photon energy to excite electrons out of filled valence bands. Chapter 5 considers the concept of diagmagnetism, paramagnetism, and ferromagnetism in solids

Abstract: Looking at the uses and abuses of high-talent manpower in the United States, Dael Wolfle analyzes the ways in which this country produces, distributes, and utilizes its vital human resources. He examines changing trends in academic and professional supply and demand, and advocates long range administrative planning in order to avoid overspecialization and wasteful use of the professional labor force. To this discussion Dr. Wolfle brings twenty-five years' experience as a psychologist and student of the changing needs for and uses of high talent manpower. Basing his analysis on data from the disciplines of sociology, education, psychology, economics, and management he offers his cautionary conclusions to stimulate thought and provoke action.
