Abstract: The first systematic theory of generalized functions (also known as distributions) was created in the early 1950s, although some aspects were developed much earlier, most notably in the definition of the Green's function in mathematics and in the work of Paul Dirac on quantum electrodynamics in physics. The six-volume collection, Generalized Functions, written by I. M. Gel′fand and co-authors and published in Russian between 1958 and 1966, gives an introduction to generalized functions and presents various applications to analysis, PDE, stochastic processes, and representation theory. Volume 2 is devoted to detailed study of generalized functions as linear functionals on appropriate spaces of smooth test functions. In Chapter 1, the authors introduce and study countable-normed linear topological spaces, laying out a general theoretical foundation for the analysis of spaces of generalized functions. The two most important classes of spaces of test functions are spaces of compactly supported functions and Schwartz spaces of rapidly decreasing functions. In Chapters 2 and 3 of the book, the authors transfer many results presented in Volume 1 to generalized functions corresponding to these more general spaces. Finally, Chapter 4 is devoted to the study of the Fourier transform; in particular, it includes appropriate versions of the Paley-Wiener theorem

Abstract: The first systematic theory of generalized functions (also known as distributions) was created in the early 1950s, although some aspects were developed much earlier, most notably in the definition of the Green's function in mathematics and in the work of Paul Dirac on quantum electrodynamics in physics. The unifying theme of Volume 6 is the study of representations of the general linear group of order two over various fields and rings of number-theoretic nature, most importantly over local fields (p-adic fields and fields of power series over finite fields) and over the ring of adeles. Representation theory of the latter group naturally leads to the study of automorphic functions and related number-theoretic problems. The book contains a wealth of information about discrete subgroups and automorphic representations, and can be used both as a very good introduction to the subject and as a valuable reference

Abstract: The Structures of Alloys of Iron: An Elementary Introduction provides an elementary review of some of the factors affecting the structures of alloys of iron, with examples illustrating points of interest. In view of the existence of books dealing with the technology and properties of iron alloys it was decided that the present book should be concerned only with the structures, and not with the properties of the alloys. In connection with steels it was thought best, in the space available, to deal only with those based on iron-carbon alloys. The book begins with chapters on the metal iron, the crystal structures of iron, the diffusion of iron and its alloys, and the intermetallic chemistry of iron. Subsequent chapters deal with the structure of steels, plain carbon steels, the structure of alloy steels, and cast irons. This book is intended for those wanting to make a general survey of the subject before undertaking a detailed study. The reader must understand clearly that much further work will be necessary before he can hope to understand properly even one class of the alloys of industry

Abstract: Collected Papers of P. L. Kapitza brings together the collected papers of Soviet physicist P. L. Kapitza in areas such as the viscosity of liquid helium below the λ-point; the Zeeman and Paschen-Back effects in strong magnetic fields; the influence of friction forces on the stability of high-speed rotors; heat transfer in helium II; and the formation of sea waves by the wind. Kapitza's other papers explore heat transfer in a two-dimensional turbulent flow; dynamical stability of a pendulum when its point of suspension vibrates; and the hydrodynamic theory of lubrication in the presence of rolling. This volume is comprised of 25 chapters and begins with an analysis of Kapitza's research on the viscosity of liquid helium below the λ-point, followed by his studies on the Zeeman and Paschen-Back effects in strong magnetic fields; liquefaction of air at low pressures; heat transfer and superfluidity in helium II; and the flow of thin viscous fluid layers under the action of a constant volume force, taking into account the surface tension. A pendulum with a vibrating suspension is also described, along with heat conductivity and diffusion in liquid medium under periodic flow conditions; the nature of ball-lightning; and symmetric electric oscillations of a perfectly conducting hollow cylinder of finite length. This book will be helpful to physicists and physics students

    Keywords: Carbides ; Refractory materials
Abstract: The Refractory Carbides is intended as a guide to the chemist who wishes to undertake a fundamental study of refractory carbide systems. No effort has been made to discuss all of the properties for which information is available. Rather, the selection is intended to give the reader information and some insights which are basic to any measurement. This work includes a number of the more important physical and chemical properties of the nine transition elements included in Groups 4, 5, and 6 of the 4th, 5th, and 6th periods. The three actinide systems, Th-C, U-C, and Pu-C, have also been discussed. While this limited selection does not include all of the high melting carbides, it does include the more refractory and the more useful ones. These systems offer a unique collection of properties for an understanding of the chemical bond. Each system is discussed individually in terms of each property. These include phase relationship, lattice parameter and structure, chemical stability, hardness, and thermochemical properties which include vaporization behavior. In addition, the thermal data for the carbides and many of the associated elements have been reevaluated

    Keywords: Beta decay
Abstract: The Theory of Beta-Decay covers the formulas, theories, probabilities, and spectra of beta-decay. This book is divided into 2 parts compassing 12 chapters, and starts with the introduction to the neutrino and the quantum theoretical background, explaining the basic phenomenon of beta-decay and the emission of electrons. The subsequent chapters deal with the interaction and the transition probability, as well as formulas of solutions. These topics are followed by discussions on the developments in the non-conservation of parity and helicity, the two-component theory of the neutrino, possible invariance under time-reversal and charge conjugation, leptonic number of lepton charge, and muon decay and other theories. Other chapters describe the tentative theory of beta-radiation, the detection of the free neutrino, and the selection rules for the beta-disintegration. The last chapters consider questions and experimental test about beta-decay. The chapters also look into the theories and helicity of neutrino, the theory of the Fermi interaction, and the test of the nature of the vector interaction in beta-decay This book will be of value to physicists and researchers in the allied fields

The book includes the study of uniqueness classes of solutions of the Cauchy problem and the study of classes of functions where the Cauchy problem is well posed. The six-volume collection, Generalized Functions, written by I. M. The unifying idea of Volume 5 in the series is the application of the theory of generalized functions developed in earlier volumes to problems of integral geometry, to representations of Lie groups, specifically of the Lorentz group, and to harmonic analysis on corresponding homogeneous spaces. The book is written with great clarity and requires little in the way of special previous knowledge of either group representation theory or integral geometry; it is also independent of the earlier volumes in the series. The exposition starts with the definition, properties, and main results related to the classical Radon transform, passing to integral geometry in complex space, representations of the group of complex unimodular matrices of second order, and harmonic analysis on this group and on most important homogeneous spaces related to this group. The volume ends with the study of representations of the group of real unimodular matrices of order two

Abstract: Cybernetics and Development deals with the ways in which growing and developing biological systems control themselves during development. It is a preliminary attempt to apply some of the insights and techniques of cybernetics to the problem of understanding such development and its control. The book begins with a discussion of the nature of cybernetics and its methods. Separate chapters cover the use of cybernetics in the field of biological development; previous work in the area of cybernetics related to automata theory; and the application of information theory to development. Subsequent chapters present models of development. These include computer programs which continually replicate themselves and control the resulting development; growing automata nets as models of development; and a method that allows a system to control the relative sizes of its parts during development and afterwards during regeneration. This book provides enough background material to make it understandable both to the biologist with little knowledge of cybernetics and the cybernetician with no great knowledge of developmental biology

Abstract: Wenner-Gren Center International Symposium Series, Volume 8: Olfaction and Taste II covers the proceedings of the Second International Symposium, held in Tokyo, Japan on September 1965. This book is composed of 53 chapters that bring together theoretical and experimental studies on the chemoreception in insects, other invertebrates and vertebrates, from fishes to the monkey, and their significance in delineating human olfaction and taste. Other chapters deal with the study of the chemoreceptive organs and their related parts of the nervous system, which will be helpful in the analysis of the function of other sensory organs and their neural connections. This book also discusses the evidence that the epithelium of the front of the tongue has other properties than that of the back of the tongue as far as the conversion of its cells into gustatory cells is concerned under the influence of the outgrowing gustatory nerve fibers. The remaining chapters describe the transmission and decoding of coded information from the receptors in the central nervous system. This book is of value to biologists, physiologists, and research workers who are interested in the complex mechanism of olfaction and taste

Abstract: Advances in Microwaves, Volume 1 is a collection of papers dealing with the design and fabrication of a two-mile accelerator, optical waveguides, and directional couplers. One paper describes the design and fabrication of the disk-loaded wave guide, which serves as the accelerating structure, of the Stanford two-mile accelerator. Another paper discusses the basic principles of guided propagation, particularly the properties of the confocal lens systems or the "beam guide" variants. One paper describes the main types of directional couplers (namely, waveguide directional couplers, TEM-Mode directional couplers) to help scientists and researchers determine a particular design. Some papers discuss singular integral equations to solve waveguide problems, the application of Lie algebraic theory to microwave networks, and partially filled waveguides and surface waveguides of rectangular cross section. One paper explains the application of the singular integral equation method to rectangular waveguides, including the infinite parallel plate configuration. Another paper cites the exponentially tapered transmission line as an example to show the application of Lie algebras in solving problems related to the microwave field. The collection is suitable for people in the field of applied mathematics, nuclear physics, quantum mechanics, and applied physics

Abstract: Neutron Cross Sections presents the principles of cross-section measurement and use, as well as sufficient theory so that the general behavior of cross sections is made understandable. This compilation is a direct result of experiences connected with the collection and evaluation of cross-section data during the past eight years at ""Sigma Centre"", Brookhaven National Laboratory. Here, experimental results received from laboratories throughout the world are carefully evaluated and compiled in the curves and tables of the large volume Neutron Cross Sections, The most recent version of the compilation, known as BNL 325, appeared 1 July 1955, and Supplement 1 to BNL 325 was published on 1 January 1957. The compilation itself consists almost completely of cross sections at specific energies, shown in the form of curves or tables, with only brief explanatory texts. The text opens with discussions of the general properties of cross sections and principles of nuclear structure that are important to the understanding of cross-section behavior. Separate chapters follow that describe specific techniques for measuring cross sections along with experimental results involving fast neutrons, resonance neutrons, resonances in fissionable materials, and thermal neutrons

Abstract: The Old Quantum Theory explains how the classical laws were modified by Planck, Einstein, Rutherford, Bohr, and other contributors to account for atomic phenomena, comprising the development of quantum theory from its start at the very end of the 19th century until the beginning of the 20th century. This book begins by discussing Planck's discovery of his radiation law, followed by Einstein's introduction to quanta. Next is a description of the Rutherford model of the atom and Bohr's postulates, which are confirmed by the Franck-Hertz experiment. This selection concludes with a description of how Bohr's theory could explain the main features of the atomic spectra. A brief summary of other important developments in the period are also elaborated. This publication is beneficial to students and researchers conducting work on the history of quantum mechanics from the 1900s to the development of wave mechanics

Abstract: Annals of the International Geophysical Year, Volume 37: Whistlers and Audio-Frequency Emissions presents the principal results obtained in Whistlers-East synoptic program publications. Although whistlers can be observed at any time of day, it is found that they occur primarily at night. The greatest incidence of whistlers during the International Geophysical Year (IGY) period occurred in both hemispheres in the geomagnetic latitude range 50-60°. The day-to-day correlation of whistler activity at geomagnetically conjugate stations was sometimes very low and sometimes remarkably high. This book specifically provides data of monthly summaries of whistlers and audiofrequency emissions observed and recorded on magnetic tape at the given stations during the IGY (1957 Jul - 1958 Dec). The summaries have been compiled from daily tabulations obtained by aural reduction of the recordings. The IGY agreements required only that monthly summaries be sent to the World Data Centers but for some stations, daily tabulations were sent instead. For most stations the daily tabulations and the magnetic tape recordings themselves have been preserved and are held by the persons having supervision of each station and the aural reduction of data there from. This book will be of value to geophysicists and space scientists and researchers

Abstract: Cartesian Tensors in Engineering Science provides a comprehensive discussion of Cartesian tensors. The engineer, when working in three dimensions, often comes across quantities which have nine components. Variation of the components in a given plane may be shown graphically by a familiar construction called Mohr's circle. For such quantities it is always possible to find three mutually perpendicular axes, called principal axes, with respect to which the six ""paired up"" components are all zero. Such quantities are called symmetric tensors of the second order. The student may at this stage be struck by the fact that the physical quantities with which he normally deals have either one component, three components or nine components, being respectively scalars, vectors, and what have just been called second order tensors. The family of quantities having 1, 3, 9, 27, … components does exist. It is the tensor family in three dimensions. The book discusses the ""tests"" a given quantity must pass in order to qualify as a member of the family. The products of tensors, elasticity, and second moment of area and moment of inertia are also covered. Although written primarily for engineers, it is hoped that students of various branches of physical science may find this book useful

Abstract: Fault and Joint Development: In Brittle and Semi-Brittle Rock details the theoretical concepts about fault and joint development in rock when they behave as brittle or semi-brittle material. The title first covers the concepts and criteria of brittle failure, along with the limits of temperature and pressure below which rocks may behave in a brittle or semi-brittle manner. Next, the selection details the application of the concepts of brittle failure and elastic theory to the problems of faulting and jointing. The book will be of great use to undergraduate students of geology and its related degrees. The text will also serve professionals in geological disciplines as a reference
