Keywords: Theory of distributions (Functional analysis)
Abstract: The first systematic theory of generalized functions (also known as distributions) was created in the early 1950s, although some aspects were developed much earlier, most notably in the definition of the Green's function in mathematics and in the work of Paul Dirac on quantum electrodynamics in physics. The six-volume collection, Generalized Functions, written by I. M. Gel′fand and co-authors and published in Russian between 1958 and 1966, gives an introduction to generalized functions and presents various applications to analysis, PDE, stochastic processes, and representation theory. Volume 1 is devoted to basics of the theory of generalized functions. The first chapter contains main definitions and most important properties of generalized functions as functional on the space of smooth functions with compact support. The second chapter talks about the Fourier transform of generalized functions. In Chapter 3, definitions and properties of some important classes of generalized functions are discussed; in particular, generalized functions supported on submanifolds of lower dimension, generalized functions associated with quadratic forms, and homogeneous generalized functions are studied in detail. Many simple basic examples make this book an excellent place for a novice to get acquainted with the theory of generalized functions. A long appendix presents basics of generalized functions of complex variables

Abstract: Semiconductor Statistics presents statistics aimed at complementing existing books on the relationships between carrier densities and transport effects. The book is divided into two parts. Part I provides introductory material on the electron theory of solids, and then discusses carrier statistics for semiconductors in thermal equilibrium. Of course a solid cannot be in true thermodynamic equilibrium if any electrical current is passed; but when currents are reasonably small the distribution function is but little perturbed, and the carrier distribution for such a ""quasi-equilibrium"" condition is inappreciably different from that of thermal equilibrium itself. Thus the results of Part I are not invalidated when the properties of a semiconductor are measured using small current densities. Part II considers non-equilibrium statistics for semiconductors with appreciable excess carrier densities. The various kinds of recombination mechanism are examined, and the consequences discussed for steady state and transient situations. The subject matter of this book was deliberately restricted in scope in order to be of maximum value to scientists with an active interest in the basic properties of semiconducting materials

Keywords: Cilia and ciliary motion ; Flagella (Microbiology)
Abstract: The Biology of Cilia and Flagella reviews advances in the study of cilia and flagella since 1928. This book focuses on four main topics-structure of cilia, factors that affect ciliary activity, movement of cilia and flagella, and coordination of beat of cilia. In these topics, this compilation specifically discusses the intracellular structures associated with ciliary bases; viscosity of the medium and ciliary activity, and energy relationships of cilia and flagella. The compounding of synchronously beating cilia, variations in shaft structure, and control of ciliary activity by the organism are also elaborated. This text likewise covers the determination of the rate of beat of cilia and root-fiber systems and coordination of ciliary beat. This publication is suitable for biologists and clinicians of other disciplines researching on the structure and physiology of cilia and flagella

    Keywords: Aerosol therapy ; Aerosols
Abstract: Microaerosols: Physiology, Pharmacology, Therapeutics presents a summary of the experimental and technical data on aerosols. This book focuses on the production, measurement, sampling, and biological importance of submicroscopic and submicronic air-borne particles and to their pharmacological, therapeutic, and physiological effects after their deposition in the respiratory tract. Organized into 22 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the process of obligatory liquid filtration. This text then examines the factors that affect the sizing and numbering of aerosols, including the duration of the aerosol dispersion into a closed space, the duration of aerosol sampling, and the location of the particles. Other chapters consider the authenticity of the penetration of aerosols into the pulmonary depths. This book discusses as well the recommendations for preparations of airway dilating solutions. The final chapter deals with the effects on the lungs of airway constricting substances dispersed in aerosols. This book is a valuable resource for physicians

The main goal of Volume 4 is to develop the functional analysis setup for the universe of generalized functions. The main notion introduced in this volume is the notion of rigged Hilbert space (also known as the equipped Hilbert space, or Gelfand triple). Such space is, in fact, a triple of topological vector spaces E \subset H \subset E', where H is a Hilbert space, E' is dual to E, and inclusions E\subset H and H\subset E' are nuclear operators. The book is devoted to various applications of this notion, such as the theory of positive definite generalized functions, the theory of generalized stochastic processes, and the study of measures on linear topological spaces

Abstract: Physics and Applications of Secondary Electron Emission provides a survey of the physics and applications of secondary electron emission. It is part of a series of monographs that aim to report on research carried out in electronics and applied physics. The monographs are written by specialists in their own subjects. Wherever it is practical the monographs will be kept short in length to enable all those interested in electronics to find the essentials necessary for their work in a condensed and concentrated form. The book begins with a discussion of secondary electrons. Separate chapters cover methods for measuring secondary electron emission; numerical results on the secondary electron emission yield of both metals and metal compounds; the influence of externally adsorbed foreign atoms and ions on secondary electron emission; and the mechanism of secondary electron emission. The final three chapters deal with the application side. These include the applications of electron multiplication; the elimination of disturbing effects due to secondary electrons; and ""storage"" devices in which information on electrical charges is written on an insulating surface, often by making use of secondary electron emission

    Keywords: Petroleum products
Abstract: Introduction to Petroleum Chemicals emerged from a series of lectures on the petroleum chemical industry given at the Manchester College of Science and Technology during the fall and winter of 1959. The book does not claim to be an exhaustive treatment of petroleum chemicals, but attempts to a survey of the important aspects of the industry at its present level of development. The course was given by chemists and chemical engineers engaged in the chemical industry of Britain, giving the text a British and European, as distinct from American, flavor. The book begins with a discussion of the cracking to olefins of liquid hydrocarbons. This is followed by separate chapters on separation processes for olefins; derivatives of ethylene and propylene; olefin polymerization process; and properties of polyethylenes and polypropylenes. Subsequent chapters cover the production and utilization of butadiene and isobutylene; aromatics production; manufacturing, properties, and uses of styrene and polystyrene; production of acetylene from hydrocarbons; and the carbon black industry

Abstract: A Course of Higher Mathematics, I: Elementary Calculus is a five-volume course of higher mathematics used by mathematicians, physicists, and engineers in the U.S.S.R. This volume deals with calculus and principles of mathematical analysis including topics on functions of single and multiple variables. The functional relationships, theory of limits, and the concept of differentiation, whether as theories and applications, are discussed. This book also examines the applications of differential calculus to geometry. For example, the equations to determine the differential of arc or the parameters of a curve are shown. This text then notes the basic problems involving integral calculus, particularly regarding indefinite integrals and their properties. The application of definite integrals in the calculation of area of a sector, the length of arc, and the calculation of the volumes of solids of a given cross-section are explained. This book further discusses the basic theory of infinite series, applications to approximate evaluations, Taylor's formula, and its extension. Finally, the geometrical approach to the concept of a number is reviewed. This text is suitable for physicists, engineers, mathematicians, and students in higher mathematics

Abstract: Classical Thermodynamics of Non-Electrolyte Solutions covers the historical development of classical thermodynamics that concerns the properties of vapor and liquid solutions of non-electrolytes. Classical thermodynamics is a network of equations, developed through the formal logic of mathematics from a very few fundamental postulates and leading to a great variety of useful deductions. This book is composed of seven chapters and begins with discussions on the fundamentals of thermodynamics and the thermodynamic properties of fluids. The succeeding chapter presents the equations of state for the calculation of the thermodynamic behavior of constant-composition fluids, both liquid and gaseous. These topics are followed by surveys of the mixing of pure materials to form a solution under conditions of constant temperature and pressure. The discussion then shifts to general equations for calculation of partial molal properties of homogeneous binary systems. The last chapter considers the approach to equilibrium of systems within which composition changes are brought about either by mass transfer between phases or by chemical reaction within a phase, or by both

Abstract: Modern Russian Stress is a translation from the Russian dealing with pronunciation of Russian words. This guide to pronunciation, particularly on the correct stress given to the modern spoken Russian word, covers the laws of orthoepy. Orthoepy concerns the principles ensuring the unity of sounds that are recognizable in a particular language. This book analyzes stress in the spoken word in terms of either the sense-group or the breath group. The speaker uses specific intonation and pauses which make the words recognizable. Stress is a word indicator. This guide explains the different ways of stressing a word-syllable, such as the dynamic stress, musical stress, and quantitative stress. This book gives additional attention to the fixed and free stresses. In the Russian language, stress has no fixed position and can occur at any syllable or morphological element of the word, or can shift positions depending on the word use. This book also explains the sound structure and form of certain words. It analyzes stress when found in nouns, verbs, participles, and adjectives, and weak or unstressed words when located in prepositions, conjunctions, pronouns, numerals, linking-verbs, modal verbs and parenthetic verbs. An important part of this guide is the glossary that includes several thousands of Russian words that are usually mis-stressed. This guide can be useful to the student learning elementary Russian, and for migrants and overseas workers who know a little Russian

Abstract: Topological Spaces focuses on the applications of the theory of topological spaces to the different branches of mathematics. The book first offers information on elementary principles, topological spaces, and compactness and connectedness. Discussions focus on locally compact spaces, local connectedness, fundamental concepts and their reformulations, lattice of topologies, axioms of separation, fundamental concepts of set theory, and ordered sets and lattices. The manuscript then ponders on mappings and extensions and characterization of topological spaces, including completely regular spaces, transference of topologies, Wallman compactification, and embeddings. The publication takes a look at metric and uniform spaces and applications of topological groups. Topics include the Stone-Weierstrass Approximation Theorem, extensions and completions of topological groups, topological rings and fields, extension and completion of uniform spaces, uniform continuity and uniform convergence, metric spaces, and metritization. The text is a valuable reference for mathematicians and researchers interested in the study of topological spaces
