Notes: The inorganic misfit layer compound (SbS)1.15(TiS2)2 was prepared by high-temperature reaction of the elements. It can be regarded as a stage-2 phase intercalation compound where double layers of SbS are inserted into the van der Waals gaps of TiS2 with stacking sequence ...[TiS2][SbS][TiS2][TiS2][SbS][TiS2].... The structure, determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction on the basis of the (3 + 2)-dimensional superspace group C{\bar 1}, is described by two interpenetrating, incommensurately modulated subsystems. The first subsystem comprises double sandwiches of TiS2 with 1T-TiS2 structure. The lattice parameters are a11 = 3.404 (1), a12 = 5.908 (3), a13 = 17.068 (3) Å, α1 = 86.28 (2), β1 = 96.40 (2) and γ1 = 90.00 (2)°. The second subsystem is built of intrinsically interface modulated double layers of SbS. Unit-cell dimensions of the basic structure are given by a21 = 2.950 (1), a22 = 5.932 (2), a23 = 17.008 (2) Å, α2 = 85.82 (1), β2 = 85.30 (1), γ2 = 84.11 (1)°. The interface modulation wavevector of SbS is given by q = 0.411 (2)a*21 + 0.822 (4)a*22. The two subsystems have the common (a*v2, a*v3) plane. Refinement on 3112 reflections with I > 2.5σ(I) converged to R = 0.088 (wR = 0.108). The structure consists of both occupational and displacive modulations for the atoms in the SbS subsystem. The SbS subsystem has the same structural features as found in the compound (SbS)1.15TiS2 [Ren, Meetsma, Petricek, van Smaalen & Wiegers (1995), Acta Cryst. B51, 275–287]. But stacking disorder of SbS is found corresponding to displacements of the layers along the a21 axis; the final structure model involves a rigid shift of 0.63 (2) Å of 5.5 (4)% of SbS to both sides along a21.

Description: We show that the impact of foreign aid on bureaucratic quality in recipient countries varies with the mode of delivery. Specifically, grants are found to impair the functioning of the bureaucracy, whereas loans are not. The negative impact of grants is larger when they are given as budget support rather than as assistance for specific projects or for programs in general.

Description: To measure income inequality with right censored (topcoded) data, we propose multiple imputation for censored observations using draws from Generalized Beta of the Second Kind distributions to provide partially synthetic datasets analyzed using complete data methods. Estimation and inference uses Reiter s (Survey Methodology 2003) formulae. Using Current Population Survey (CPS) internal data, we find few statistically significant differences in income inequality for pairs of years between 1995 and 2004. We also show that using CPS public use data with cell mean imputations may lead to incorrect inferences about inequality differences. Multiply-imputed public use data provide an intermediate solution.

Description: With fortuitously timed data - collected before, during and after a major macro-financial crisis in Bulgaria - we revisit several hypotheses in the economics and nutritional literature related to the tendency of households to smooth their nutritional status over time. We explore the dietary impact of both falling real incomes in the context of hyperinflation and crisis and changing relative prices and the changing responsiveness of different groups of people to these incomes and prices over six year of fundamental structural reforms of the economy. Our results highlight large and dramatically changing food and nutrient elasticities, which challenge the perception of household ability to smooth their nutrient stream during economic crises and transitions.

Description: We use household surveys from 1995, 2002, and 2007 to examine how changes in job structure contributed to China's rising urban wage inequality, considering three job characteristics: occupation, industry, and firm ownership. The explanatory power of job structure for wage inequality increased between 1995 and 2007. Both the change in relative number of jobs (composition effect) and the change in between-job and within-job wage gaps (price effect) contributed to rising wage inequality. Price effect was the major contributor, whereas composition effect played a larger role in the 1995-2002 period than in the 2002-2007 period, and at the lower-half distribution. Between-job inequality played a major role in the first period, and within-job inequality played a major role in the second period. Our results suggest that both technological change and institutional features influence job structure and wage inequality.
