    Notes: Summary The gastrointestinal tract of cartilaginous fishes, like that of higher vertebrates, is known to contain endocrine cells and nerves immunoreactive for a wide variety of peptides, some of which have been structurally characterised. Since we have found that substance P-, bombesin-and peptide histidine isoleucine-like immunoreactivities are similarly distributed in the endocrine cells of the dogfish pyloric stomach, we have tried to establish whether any of these peptides are co-localised. The cells were compared in thin serial sections with both ligh-and electron microscopical immunocytochemistry. Double immunolabelling was also used to show two immunoreactive peptides in the same tissue section. Further characterisation of the immunoreactivity was attempted by preabsorbing the antibodies with various peptides or synthetic fragments of peptide molecules. Immunoreactivity for all three peptides was frequently present in the same cells, whereas antibodies to other peptides such as gastrin and somatostatin marked different cells. Electron microscopy indicated that all the secretory granules in three morphologically different cell types reacted with antibodies to all three peptides. Dual localisation of unrelated peptides in endocrine cells or nerves is established in many cases, but triple localisation is as yet unusual. The immunoreaction for bombesin-like peptides is different in endocrine cells and nerves, indicating that dogfish bombesin may be present in two forms, in agreement with biochemical evidence.

    Notes: Summary  The effect of different anatomic shapes and materials of posts in the stress distribution on an endodontically treated incisor was evaluated in this work. This study compared three post shapes (tapered, cylindrical and two-stage cylindrical) made of three different materials (stainless steel, titanium and carbon fibre on Bisphenol A-Glycidyl Methacrylate (Bis-GMA) matrix). Two-dimensional stress analysis was performed using the Finite Element Method. A static load of 100N was applied at 45° inclination with respect to the incisor's edge. The stress concentrations did not significantly affect the region adjacent to the alveolar bone crest at the palatine portion of the tooth, regardless of the post shape or material. However, stress concentrations on the post/dentin interface on the palatine side of the tooth root presented significant variations for different post shapes and materials. Post shapes had relatively small impact on the stress concentrations while post materials introduced higher variations on them. Stainless steel posts presented the highest level of stress concentration, followed by titanium and carbon/Bis-GMA posts.

    Notes: Abstract.  In this work we have used the inhibitor of F-actin polymerisation cytochalasin B (Cyt B) to test the hypothesis that the contractile ring and the central spindle are mutually interdependent structures in mammalian mitotic cells. Double fluorescence staining of α-tubulin and F-actin was employed to analyse anaphase and telophase figures from asynchronously growing cultures and prometaphase-synchronised cells. Testing for the presence of the central spindle and contractile ring in human primary fibroblasts, human hepatoma cells and Chinese hamster cells after Cyt B treatment showed that both structures were simultaneously absent in over 60% of treated anaphases and 80% of telophases. Experiments on resumption of cytokinesis in cleavage-arrested cells further showed that Cyt B-treated human fibroblasts proceeded to cleavage within minutes after removal of the drug from the medium, concomitant with the re-formation of both cellular structures in cleaving cells. These data suggest that the presence of a correctly assembled contractile ring is essential for the formation and persistence of the central spindle during ana-telophase and provide further support for the idea of a strong co-operative interaction between these two structures during cytokinesis.

    Notes: Abstract —In the last decade temporary teleseismic transects have become a powerful tool for investigating the crustal and upper mantle structure. In order to gain a clearer picture of the lithosphere-asthenosphere structure in peninsular Italy, between 1994 and 1996, we have deployed three teleseismic transects in northern, central, and southern Apennines, in the framework of the project GeoModAp (European Community contract EV5V-CT94–0464). Some hundreds of teleseisms were recorded at each deployment which lasted between 3 and 4 months. Although many analyses are still in progress, the availability of this high quality data allowed us to refine tomographic images of the lithosphere-asthenosphere structure with an improved resolution in the northern and central Apennines, and to study the deformation of the upper mantle looking at seismic anisotropy through shear-wave splitting analysis. Also, a study of the depth and geometry of the Moho through the receiver function technique is in progress. Tomographic results from the northernmost 1994 and the central 1995 teleseismic experiments confirm that a high-velocity anomaly (HVA) does exist in the upper 200–250 km and is confined to the northern Apenninic arc. This HVA, already interpreted as a fragment of subducted lithosphere is better defined by the new temporary data, compared to previous works, based only on data from permanent stations. No clear high-velocity anomalies are detected in the upper 250 km below the central Apennines, suggesting either a slab window due to a detachment below southern peninsular Italy, or a thinner, perhaps continental slab of Adriatic lithosphere not detectable by standard tomography. We found clear evidence of seismic anisotropy in the uppermost mantle, related to the main tectonic processes which affected the studied regions, either NE–SW compressional deformation of the lithosphere beneath the mountain belt, or arc-parallel asthenospheric flow (both giving NW–SE fast polarization direction), and successive extensional deformation (∼E–W trending) in the back-arc basin of northern Tyrrhenian and Tuscany. Preliminary results of receiver function studies in the northern Apennines show that the Moho depth is well defined in the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic regions while its geometry underneath the mountain belt is not yet well constrained, due to the observed high complexity.
