    Notes: The effects of inhibitors of proteasome function were studied in the retina of developing rats. Explants from the retina of neonatal rats at postnatal day (P) 3 or P6 were incubated with various combinations of the proteasome inhibitor carbobenzoxyl-leucinyl-leucinyl-leucinal (MG132), the protein synthesis inhibitor anisomycin, or the adenylyl cyclase activator forskolin. MG132 induced cell death in a subset of cells within the neuroblastic (proliferative) layer of the retinal tissue. The cells sensitive to degeneration induced by either MG132 or anisomycin, were birthdated by bromodeoxyuridine injections. This showed that the MG132-sensitive population includes both proliferating cells most likely in their last round of cell division, and postmitotic undifferentiated cells, at a slightly earlier stage than the population, sensitive to anisomycin-induced cell death. The results show that sensitivity to cell death induced by proteasome inhibitors defines a window of development in the transition from the cell cycle to the differentiated state in retinal cells.

    Notes: We report on the fabrication and device properties of light-emitting resonant cavity conjugated-polymer diodes. The microcavity structures were constructed using a dielectric mirror, an indium–tin–oxide anode, a green light-emitting polyfluorene blend, and a metal (cathode) mirror. The best performance was obtained for a composite calcium–aluminum cathode, that combines high reflectivity with a low workfunction. This structure emitted electroluminescence with a linewidth of 12 nm and a maximum brightness of 300 cd m−2 at a bias of 35 V with an efficiency of 0.95 cd A−1. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Homogeneous alignment of poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene) films on thin layers of rubbed precursor-route poly(p-phenylenevinylene) allows the construction of light-emitting diodes that emit highly polarized blue light (λem=458 nm). The rubbed poly(p-phenylenevinylene) acts as an effective hole-injecting alignment layer. Annealing of poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene) in its nematic phase followed by rapid quenching orients the polymer as a glassy monodomain on the alignment layer and gives devices with a polarization ratio of 25:1 and a luminance of up to 250 cd/m2. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report electroabsorption studies of poly(2-methoxy-5-ethyl(2′-hexyloxy) para-phenylene vinylene) light-emitting diodes. An electric field develops during operation which opposes the field of the applied bias. The counter field builds up within 5 s of turning on the device, increases in magnitude with the operating voltage, and decays exponentially with a time constant between 15 and 32 s. We attribute the counter field to bulk carrier traps and discuss its relevance to the increase of the turn-on voltage as organic light-emitting diodes degrade. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.
