Notes: Abstract: A Wegner estimate is proved for quantum systems in multi-dimensional Euclidean space which are characterized by one-particle Schrödinger operators with random potentials that admit a certain one-parameter decomposition. In particular, the Wegner estimate applies to systems with rather general Gaussian random potentials. As a consequence, these systems possess an absolutely continuous integrated density of states, whose derivative, the density of states, is locally bounded. An explicit upper bound is derived.

Notes: Abstract A complex polydispersity became apparent when the poly(glycerophosphate) lipoteichoic acid of Enterococcus faecalis was chromatographed on DEAE-sephadex. The chain length varied between 13 and 33 glycerophosphate residues per lipid anchor. In parallel, the extent of chain glycosylation increased from 0.2 to 0.4 diglucosyl residues per glycerophosphate unit. Substitution with D-alanine ester showed a reverse distribution dropping with increasing chain length from 0.53 to 0.23 mol D-alanine per mol phosphorus. Variations in the fatty acid composition were also observed. The results extent and modify the current picture of lipoteichoic acid biosynthesis. They further suggest that during infection the mammalian organism may be confronted particularly with long-chain less hydrophobic molecular species.

Notes: Summary The paper deals with an application of Galerkin's method to a nonconservative problem of the elastic stability of bars. It is shown that the relation between the critical loads of the two-parametric eigenvalue problem is nearly linear.

Notes: Phosphorylcholine is an important bioactive adduct to the teichoic acid (TA) and lipoteichoic acid (LTA) of the surface of Streptococcus pneumoniae. We have identified and characterized a genetic locus lic that is required for phosphorylcholine metabolism in S. pneumoniae. The pneumococcal lic locus consists of eight genes, licA, licB, licC and licD1, licD2 and three additional open reading frames. Pneumococcal licA, licB, licC, licD1 and licD2 have significant sequence similarity to licA, licB, licC and licD of Haemophilus influenzae. Mutation of licD2 led to decreased [3H]-choline uptake, aberrant migration of LTA chains in SDS–PAGE gels, loss of several surface proteins, and a phase-locked hypertransparent colony phenotype. Moreover, the licD2− mutant failed to undergo lysis after treatment with penicillin at high cell density and showed decreased transformation competence. Finally, the licD2− mutant demonstrated decreased adherence to the human type II alveolar cells, reduced nasopharyngeal colonization in infant rats, as well as significantly impaired virulence upon intraperitoneal challenge of CF1 mice. Identification of the lic genes in the pneumococcus will facilitate further characterization of the role of surface choline in microbial physiology and pathogenesis.

Notes: Lipoteichoic acid- and teichoic acid-containing muropeptides were isolated from choline- or ethanolamine-grown cells of the choline-independent mutant JY2190 of Streptococcus pneumoniae. Choline was taken up and incorporated into lipoteichoic acid and teichoic acid with 81% efficiency, compared with the parent strain Rx1. With similar efficiency, ethanolamine was incorporated. Accordingly, the mutant is a valuable tool for identifying the individual genes encoding the enzymes of choline utilisation, because any of these genes can be deleted without affecting viability and growth rate.
