    Notes: This review presents a general picture of suspension, dispersion, and interfacial polycondensation processes employed for the preparation of beaded resins, dry powders, and high solid dispersions. The polymer systems covered include polyamides, polyesters, polycarbonates, polyurethanes, and phenol-formaldehyde and urea-formaldehyde resins. Basic features of heterogeneous polycondensation processes are outlined, and different mechanisms of particle formation in suspension, dispersion, and interfacial polycondensation are discussed. Effects of manufacturing parameters such as feed ratio, droplet/particle stabilizer, and stirrer speed on product characteristics are also briefly covered.

    Notes: Well defined, narrow molecular weight distribution polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) oligomers containing single, terminal, reactive end groups were synthesised by the anionic polymerisation of hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane (D3). A variety of functionalities were obtained by termination with an appropriate silyl chloride end blocker, e.g. styryl, allyl, silyl chloride, silane, hexenyl etc. Certain monomeric end blockers were also synthesised where necessary. The resulting oligomers were subjected to detailed characterisation using 1H NMR, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and IR spectroscopy.

    Notes: An unsaturated segmented polyurethane was prepared from cis-2-butene-1,4-diol, poly(ethylene glycol), butane-1,4-diol, and methylene bis(4-phenyl isocyanate). Graft copolymerization of N-vinylpyrrolidone onto the segmented polyurethane was studied using 2,2′-azoisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as initiator in DMF as solvent. The graft copolymers were isolated from the homopolymer and the ungrafted polyurethane by selective solvent extraction. The effect of reaction time, temperature, and of monomer and initiator concentrations on the degree of grafting was also investigated. The percent grafting was enhanced with increasing [AIBN] up to 40 mmol.dm-3, but then decreased at higher concentrations. An explanation based on complex formation between the monomer and the urethane linkages in polyurethane is suggested.

    Notes: The synthesis and characterization of 2-formamido-2-methylpropyl acrylate (FMPA) is reported. 13C NMR spectra of FMPA in CDCl3, CD3OD, DMSO-d6, DMF-d7, and D2O exhibit two pairs of lines for all seven carbon atoms at room temperature; the ratio of the two conformers varies moderately with solvent (21 : 79 to 41 : 59). The conformers are believed to involve strong internal hydrogen bonding which is not completely broken even by the addition of trifluoroacetic acid to CDCl3 (1/1, v/v). However, the pairs of lines coalesce in turn as the temperature is raised to 120°C in DMSO-d6. FMPA was polymerized at 35°C in DMF and CHCl3, using a free radical initiator and the polymer was characterized by 13C NMR spectroscopy.

Sie verläuft leicht unter Bildung von statistischen Copolymeren niedrigen Molekulargewichts. Die Copolymerisationsparameter betragen für r1 (Butadien) = 3,5±0,5 und für r2 (Vinylferrocen) = 0,30±0,10. Die Q und e-Werte für Vinylferrocen sind 0,68 bzw. -1,05. Es wird gezeigt, daß die Copolymere eine paramagnetische Spezies enthalten, die als Fe(III)-Komplex von hoher Spindichte identifiziert wurde.
    Notes: The free radical copolymerization of butadiene and vinylferrocene was studied at 60°C in 1,4-dioxane. Copolymerization occurs readily to give low molecular weight random copolymers. The reactivity ratios are r1 (butadiene) = 3,5±0,5 and r2 (vinylferrocene) = 0,30±0,10 and the Q and e values for vinylferrocene are 0,68 and -1,05, respectively. The copolymers are shown to contain a paramagnetic species which is identified as a high spin Fe(III) complex.
