    Notes: Abstract Intramedullary cavernous angiomas are rare vascular malformations; all published cases have been surgically approached posteriorly by standard laminectomy. We describe the case of a 63-year-old man with an intramedullary cavernous angioma, anteriorly located in the thoracic spinal cord. The angioma was operated on by transthoracic approach and totally removed.

    Notes: Abstract We performed a clinical and genetic study of patients affected by cavernous angiomas (CA) of the nervous system. We examined initial signs and symptoms in sporadic and familial cases. We obtained clinical, neuroimaging and genetic data on 15 Italian patients with CA of the nervous system with positive, doubtful or apparently negative family history. Genetic markers surrounding three different gene regions (7q, 3q and 7p) were analysed. In one small family, genetic linkage was consistent with all chromosome loci. In another family with the unusual association of cerebral and spinal CA, linkage with chromosome 7q and, likely, 7p was excluded, while linkage with locus 3q was possible. Our results indicate that Italian families with CA may show genetic heterogeneity. Non-specific and subtle onset symptoms hide the presence of CA within families. Patients with multiple CA may have silent cerebral lesions confirming the low penetrance of clinical signs in spite of radiological ones.

    Notes: Summary The long term surgical results in a series of 17 epidermoids of the cerebello-pontine angle are reported. In 11 cases the capsule was removed subtotally and in 6 totally. The absence of mortality among the patients who underwent subtotal removal and the onset of recurrences, if any, only long after the first operation, justify subtotal removal when tight capsular adhesions are present.

    Notes: Abstract Silica sol-gel films were prepared by dipping, starting from an acid catalyzed solution of methyltriethoxysilane (MTES) and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS). Silver metal nanoparticles were produced in the silica layer by introducing in the sol-gel precursor solution AgNO3 or AgClO4·H2O. The silver ions were thermally reduced in air at 800°C, giving an intense yellow coating film. The silver metal particles were observed by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The diameter of the silver particles was found to be about 10 nm. Absorption measurements in the UV-Vis were used to evaluate the volume fraction of silver colloids embedded in the silica layer.

    Notes: Abstract Silica coating films of 0.5–0.7 μm in thickness doped with gold metal particles were prepared by heating gel coating films obtained from solutions of acid-catalyzed methyltriethoxysilane (MTES) and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) mixture containing chlorauric acid tetrahydrate. Transparent coating films with deep blue, red, and purple colors were obtained. Changes in size and shape of the gold particles with the MTES content were observed. Lower MTES contents gave bigger and non-spherical particles, while higher MTES contents produced smaller and more spherical particles with a more uniform size distribution. The effect of heat-treatment temeprature on the shape, size, and size distribution of the metallic gold particles was also studied.

    Notes: Abstract Two sol-gel syntheses allowed the preparation of β-Al2TiO5 thin films on silicon substrates at 700°C, reacting aluminum and titanium alkoxides with and without acetylacetone as a chelating agent. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and mass spectra of the sols allowed identification of the intermediate species formed and to show the formation of an Al-Ti containing polymer establishing that the synthesis without acetylacetone leads to the most extensive polymerization. The formation of β-Al2TiO5 at low temperatures is attributed to diffusion-limited crystallization process, which takes place in the conditions of high homogeneity at molecular level reached in the sol-gel synthesis. The crystallization of the films was studied as a function of the firing time and temperature and confirmed that β-Al2TiO5 with better thermal stability was obtained with the synthesis without chelating agent.

    Notes: Abstract A guest-host solid state device based on hybrid organic-inorganic materials and fullerene derivatives has been fabricated for optical limiting applications. Different 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane derived hybrid matrices have been synthesized to increase the optical limiting performances. These matrices have shown high laser damage fluences, low light scattering, good transmittance in the visible range and allowed to deposit 10–100 μm thick films per single layer. The C60 derivatives have been functionalized with Si tri-alkoxide terminal groups and have reached a final concentration in the solid matrix up to 2 × 10−2 M·l−1. A multilayer system with a bottleneck structure has been developed to optimize a laser protection device.
