Notes: Summary Ectopic microscopic thyroid follicles were encountered fortuitously in the submucosa of the duodenum in a 63-year-old man undergoing pancreaticoduodenectomy for pancreatic carcinoma. The follicles, filled with a colloid-like substance, were intermingled with Brunner's glands of the duodenum. There were no signs or symptoms of a thyroid tumour. The epithelial cells and colloid-like substance were both immunoreactive for thyroglobulin but no cells stained for calcitonin. The possibility of a metastatic origin for the follicles from an occult thyroid carcinoma was excluded by the clinical and histopathological findings. These ectopic thyroid follicles cannot be explained by developmental inclusions or metastasis and may be metaplastic in nature.

Notes: Summary Seven cases of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP)-producing lung carcinoma were studied histologically to determine whether they fell into any previously described category. The patients were all males from 40 to 73 years of age and their serum AFP levels ranged from 1039 to 320000 ng/ml. Five cases of hepatoid adenocarcinoma, one case of endodermal sinus tumour, and one case of papillary adenocarcinoma were found. The possible origins of the tumours and their differential diagnosis are discussed. Hepatoid adenocarcinoma is a major histological category among AFP-producing lung carcinoma; other types are less frequent. The occurrence of hepatoid adenocarcinoma in both the stomach and the lung suggests that this neoplasm may also be seen in other organs of endodermal origin. It may be a major histological subtype of AFP-producing endodermal neoplasms of non-germ cell origin.

Notes: Abstract The permanent pancreas carcinoma cell line, PCI-24, was developed in order to analyse cytokine regulation on pancreas carcinoma and lymphokine-activated killer (LAK) cell interaction. PCI cells expressed ICAM-1 and HLA-ABC, but not HLA-DR antigens. PCI cells showed augmented ICAM-1 and HLA-ABC expression when incubated with interferon γ (IFNγ) and tumour necrosis factor α. A similar but weak augmentary effect on the HLA-ABC and ICAM-1 surface expression was seen with interleukin-1β treatment. Natural attachment of LAK to PCI cells was augmented by recombinant IFNγ in close association with ICAM-1 up-regulation on PCI cells. In addition, natural attachment was significantly inhibited by anti-LFA-1 and anti-ICAM-1 antibody treatments. Cytotoxicity of the LAK cells against PCI cells was also significantly inhibited with the same treatment. Thus, the attachment of LAK cells to PCI cells through LFA-1/ICAM-1 molecules appeared to be essential for the cytotoxicity for PCI cells. Pretreatment of PCI cells, but not of LAK cells, with IFNγ or other cytokines resulted in a decrease of susceptibility for LAK cell cytotoxicity. The decreased susceptibility inversely correlated with HLA-ABC expression on the PCI cells. The collective evidence indicates that, although LAK cell attachment to pancreas carcinoma cells through the LFA-1/ICAM-1 molecule is augmented by IFNγ, IFNγ treatment of pancreas carcinoma cells reduces LAK cell cytotoxicity possibly through an increase in HLA-ABC or a regulation of molecules closely associated to HLA-ABC expression.

Notes: A production technique for sheet plasma with a dc magnetron discharge source is proposed. The magnetron discharge was realized by a cross field of permanent magnets and a rectangular-typed hollow cathode, which enhances the production of high-density plasma. The plasma produced was introduced into a low-pressure region where an axial magnetic field was applied through a slit anode to form the sheet plasma, of high electron density of 4.5×1010 cm−3, electron temperature of 2.8 eV for low discharge current (0.3 A) and low magnetic field (0.18 kG). The thickness of the sheet plasma is found to be almost the same as the ion cyclotron diameter. This plasma production technique would be useful for thin-film preparation on large-area substrates.

Notes: Abstract Hepatoid adenocarcinoma is reviewed in its clinicopathological and oncogenetic aspects. This variant of adenocarcinoma has been found to be an alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) -producing carcinoma arising in extrahepatic organs, and it mimics hepatocellular carcinoma in terms of morphology and function. Vascular invasion, usually prominent, is often complicated by extensive liver metastases. A prompt and accurate diagnosis of hepatoid adenocarcinoma is important because the prognosis is very poor compared with that of common types of adenocarcinoma. The characteristic features of hepatoid adenocarcinoma are summarized on the basis of our own experiences and the literature. In addition, a possible molecular mechanism that under-lies the ectopic appearance of the hepatic phenotype is discussed.

Notes: A simplified cascaded arc discharge source is proposed as one possibility for plasma processing. While decreasing the number of floating electrodes which constrict the arc channel, the plasma parameters remain almost unchanged. The device was found to produce very low electron temperature (∼0.5 eV) plasma, preventing damage on a substrate by high energy ions which might be accelerated in an ion sheath, with high density (∼1012 cm−3). This device is expected to be applied to new fields of plasma processing requiring low electron temperature.

Notes: A production technique for sheet plasma with a radio frequency (rf, 13.56 MHz) magnetron discharge source is proposed. The magnetron discharge was realized inside the rf-excited electrode of rectangular hollow type with a magnetic field which also maintained the plasma sheet geometry. The typical density and temperature of electrons in the sheet plasma was 4.3×1010 cm−3 and 1.8 eV, respectively, at the gas pressure of 5 mTorr and the magnetic flux density of 0.3 kG. A comparison with the sheet plasma produced by a dc magnetron discharge source, which we proposed previously, is also given.
