Notes: Abstract: MPTP produces clinical, biochemical, and neuropathologic changes reminiscent of those that occur in idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD). In the present study we show that MPTP treatment led to activation of microglia in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc), which was associated and colocalized with an increase in inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression. In iNOS-deficient mice the increase of iNOS expression but not the activation of microglia was blocked. Dopaminergic SNpc neurons of iNOS-deficient mice were almost completely protected from MPTP toxicity in a chronic paradigm of MPTP toxicity. Because the MPTP-induced decrease in striatal concentrations of dopamine and its metabolites did not differ between iNOS-deficient mice and their wild-type littermates, this protection was not associated with a preservation of nigrostriatal terminals. Our results suggest that iNOS-derived nitric oxide produced in microglia plays an important role in the death of dopaminergic neurons but that other mechanisms contribute to the loss of dopaminergic terminals in MPTP neurotoxicity. We conclude that inhibition of iNOS may be a promising target for the treatment of PD.

Notes: ABSTRACT A four-generation family with nine individuals with temporal partial epilepsy was studied. Detailed epilepsy history was investigated by structured interview. All putatively affected family members underwent a standardized electroencephalographic examination. The phenotype in the family was characterized by a short acoustic aura followed by rapid secondary generalization. To examine if the trait is linked to a region on 10q (interval D10S185–D10S1671), which has been reported in two other epilepsy families with similar phenotypes, linkage analysis was performed using nine markers covering the previously reported region. A maximum two-point LOD score of 2.1 at a recombination fraction of zero was obtained. All living affected individuals shared the same haplotype, while three unaffected at-risk adults did not. This result presents supporting evidence of a gene for partial epilepsy on 10q.

Notes: Abstract The aim of our work was to study the involvement, in the process of learning, of synapses between the perforant path and granular cells of the hippocampal dentate fascia for formation of a conditioned reflex (CR) of active avoidance elaborated in response to electrostimulation of the perforant path. To achieve this we used the property of the neurotoxin colchicine at a certain concentration of eliminating selectively the fascia cells. One month after colchicine injection we observed destruction of granular cells, disappearance of the dentate fascia focally evoked potentials, and considerable deterioration in the elaboration of active avoidance CR. Administration of saline solution in control experiments did not bring about such changes. The results obtained show the imporatant role of the entorhinal input into the hippocampus in the learning model used.

Notes: A new type of detector for the determination of absolute molecular-beam intensities is described. The intensity is obtained from the work done on a cylindrical rotating body by the torque exerted by the impinging beam particles. The detector takes advantage of the very low and constant bearing friction of magnetically suspended rotors and of the complete particle momentum accommodation on uncleaned surfaces. The detection limit of the present design is Imin0 =1.2×1015/Mv˜, where M is the atom mass and v˜ the average velocity of the beam particles in ms−1. The molecular-beam detector turns out to be an absolute instrument. Principle, experimental performance, and measurements with helium nozzle beams are reported.

Notes: A mechanical beam chopper with small dimensions is presented. The shape of the generated neutral beam pulses is calculated and experimental results are discussed. The microchopper is based on the operation principle of neutron choppers. It is operated in vacuum and generates molecular beam pulses at a repetition rate of 10 kHz with pulse lengths easily adjustable between 5 and 〈1 μs. The chopper can be used for time-of-flight applications and inherently acts as a high velocity pass filter.
