Notes: The influence of various processing routes (casting, extrusion, ECAP) on microstructureevolution and electrochemical properties of the magnesium alloy AZ80 were investigated. Bothextrusion and ECAP were found to result in significant grain refinement (by a factor of 100 in theECAP alloy) of the as cast AZ80 alloy. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was used tocharacterize the electrochemical properties of the surface of different microstructure states of thealloy. After the exposure to the corrosion environment containig aggressive chloride ions (0.1MNaCl) a complex polarization layer consisting of two different layers was formed on the specimensurface. The first compact layer directly adjoined to the specimen surface while the second porouslayer was formed on the first layer. Microstructure changes due to extrusion and equal channelangular pressing were found to influence the stability of these layers. In the as cast alloy thecompact layer was broken already during the first 24 hours of the exposure, while the compact layerin the extruded specimen remained unchanged up to 72 hours of the exposure. In the ECAPspecimen both layers remained stable even after 96 hours of the exposure and no degradationoccurred. Enhanced electrochemical properties were therefore found in the ultrafine-grained ECAPspecimen

Notes: It is well-known that the high-cycle fatigue (HCF) performance of severe plasticallydeformed wrought magnesium alloys is not as good as one might expect from the significant grainsize refinement. Although enhanced HCF strength after ECAP as compared to as-cast material wasobserved its value was significantly lower than after conventional extruding. The presentinvestigation was undertaken to determine whether the relatively poor HCF strength of the ECAPprocessed wrought magnesium alloy AZ80 is associated with the ECAP-induced unfavorablecrystallographic textures. Post-ECAP thermo-mechanical treatment (TMT) was found to result infavorable texture modifications as well as in markedly improved HCF performance. The proposednovel technique consists of a not yet used combination of severe plastic deformation via ECAPfollowed by a 1-step swaging process. It is shown that the resulting combination of both ultrafinegrainsized material and beneficial crystallographic texture results in superior HCF performance notachievable by ECAP-processing alone

Notes: Abstract Letk be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0 and letf(x, y)∈k[t][x,y] be a polynomial in two variables with coefficients ink[t]. One is interested in solving the equationf(x,y)=0 with polynomialsx,y∈k[t]. Two solutions(x,y), (x′, y′) areproportional ifx′/x andy′/y are non-zero constants ink and a solution(x,y) isprimitive if the polynomialsx andy have no common root. The main result of this paper is that for a certain class of polynomialsf, which includes Thue equations with sufficiently lacunary exponents, the number of non-proportional, primitive solutions is bounded solely in terms of the number of monomials $$a_i (t)x^{\alpha _1 } y^{\beta _i } $$ appearing in the polynomialf(x,y). This verifies the analogue of a conjecture of Siegel for this class of polynomials. The proof is an application of theabc-theorem in function fields to certain determinantal varieties arising from the elimination of the coefficients of the polynomialf(x,y), together with an inductive argument on the numberr of monomials inf(x,y).

Description: Why do groups of even well-educated individuals sometimes persistently believe in political myths and ideologies? We follow cognition psychology in its finding that individuals sometimes stick with intuitive but false propositions. We also follow Kahneman, however, in maintaining that they challenge their intuition when the consequences for their individual wealth are sufficiently high. We embed these propositions into a model that determines the conditions of a myth equilibrium, in which almost all individuals stick with ex-post rationalization to justify their initial intuition, or a truth equilibrium in which all individuals pursue ex-ante reasoning that aims to get as close to the truth as possible. We show why myths are clustered around certain groups and why groups are more likely to stick with political myths than individuals, thus disproving Condorcet's jury theorem.

Description: Is leadership changing in an increasingly digitalised work environment? This question arises in corporate practice, societal debates, and in business management research. The evolution of digital technologies changes working environments considerably and creates new challenges for executives. So far, however, only little research has been conducted on how these challenges and technology-driven changes are associated with altered requirements for the skill set needed by executives. In this paper we bridge that gap by applying a three-stage research design. First, we develop a novel conceptual framework in which we categorise leadership skills and associate them with tasks, management level, and leadership experience. Building on this, we conduct semi-structured interviews with executives and systematically investigate job advertisements at the management level. Our interview results show that communication skills, subject-specific knowledge, self-organisation skills, and self-reflection skills are considered particularly relevant in times of rapid technology-driven change. Furthermore, many interview participants identify empathy and an open-mindedness towards the new as crucial personal traits. Our job advertisement analysis further reveals that executives need to be able to speak English, have IT skills, and be flexible, motivated, and stress tolerant.
