Notes: Abstract Severe environmental problems encountered in the highlands of Bolivia may be remedied through the adoption of agroforestry systems, never before studied adequately in this region. As a first step, seven tree species were tested for growth, survival and health at two elevations in the Bolivian altiplano. Species responded variably with Buddleja coriacea Remy., Pinus radiata D. Don. and Eucalyptus globulus Labill. (at the higher elevation) and E. globulus, Baccharis spp., Robinia pseudoacacia L. and B. coriacea (at the lower elevation), displaying high survival, growth and health. In a related greenhouse study, grain yields of wheat planted in soils amended with incorporated foliage of B. coriacea, P. radiata and E. globulus increased three-fold (0.3 g·plant−1 to 〉1.0 g·plant−1) over grain yields in unamended soils (B. coriacea 〉 P. radiata = E. globulus). Grain nitrogen (mg·plant−1) increased equally in soils amended with P. radiata and B. coriacea foliage (18 mg N⋅plant−1 to 20 mg·plant−1) but decreased in soils amended with foliage of E. globulus (18 g·plant−1 to 9 g·plant−1).

Notes: Abstract. Magnetic resonance imaging is an established technique for imaging the shoulder because it demonstrates clearly the articular surfaces, medullary canal and the extra-articular soft tissues which can be affected in shoulder disorders. The value of MR imaging in the evaluation of the traumatized shoulder has been described [1]; however, few cases of MR imaging in nontraumatic disorders in children have been reported. We reviewed the findings in 55 children undergoing MRI of the shoulder for nontraumatic conditions and included selected cases showing a broad range of imaging findings.

Notes: [Auszug] The HIV-1 accessory gene product Vpr can influence viral pathogenesis by affecting viral replication as well as host cell transcription and proliferation. We have investigated the effects of Vpr on host cell activation and confirm that it influences cellular proliferation. However, we have also ...

Notes: Using a homogenization framework, this paper proposes a description of the non-reversible behaviour of granular materials. First the basic equations are reviewed and some general elasticity results are presented with a comparison to DEM simulations. The global non-reversible behaviour is introduced by the definition of local conditions of contact stability: loss of contact and sliding. The first consequence is the possible definition of global yield surfaces and thus failure surfaces. These surfaces are compared to the usual plastic criteria. The influence of the different homogenization parameters introduced by the definition of localization and averaging operators is also studied. In the last section, a simulation of non-reversible behaviour is presented. Comparisons to experimental data are made in the case of simple loading paths (isotropic compression, triaxial test) as well as in complex loading histories.

Notes: [Auszug] To address the possible role of Fas/Fas-ligand interactions in activation-induced apoptosis in T-cell hybridomas, we examined the expression of Fas and Fas-ligand in the hybridoma line Al. 1, which rapidly undergoes apoptosis following activation1'3. Al.l cells do not express cell-surface Fas ...
