Notes: Abstract Incoherent Z-contrast imaging in the scanning transmission electron microscope allows atom column positions to be deduced directly from the experimental image, including locations where the column separation is less than the resolution limit. Maximum entropy analysis applied to the incoherent image locates the high-Z columns to an accuracy of ±0.2 Å. Oxygen coordination at the boundary plane can be deduced by high spatial resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy, and approximate column positions determined by simple bond-valence sum calculations. Observations of 25° (Σ=85), 36° (Σ=5) and 67° (Σ=13) [001] symmetric tilt grain boundaries in SrTiO3 bicrystals show that “half columns” are a ubiquitous feature of grain boundary structural units. The observed structural units can be combined to produce structural models for symmetric tilt boundaries over a 0–90° range. The Σ=17 (410), Σ=5 (310), and Σ=5 (210) are found to be favored boundaries and the structures of all the other tilt boundaries are comprised of these units combined with Σ=1 (100) and Σ=1 (110) structural units. All the proposed boundary models show continuity of grain boundary structure over the entire misorientation range. The Σ=17 (410) structural unit is asymmetric which induces microfacetting on all boundaries less than the Σ=5, 36.87° misorientation.

Notes: Summary The effects of hereditary hyperlipidemia on coronary artery atherosclerosis were studied in 77 White Leghorn (DeKalb strain) chickens ranging from 4 to 13 months in age. After pubescence, the plasma levels of triglyceride and cholesterol in non-laying hens ranged 2- to 3-fold and 2- to 7-fold higher compared to layers. Serial sectioning revealed that most lesions were found in the proximal portions of both the left and right coronary arteries. Ultrastructurally, lesions in the roosters contained no foam cells, whereas some foam cells and small amounts of stainable lipid were observed in the thickened intima of layers. Half of the non-layers had stenotic lesions characterized by many foam cells, necrotic foci, and heavy stromal lipid deposits. Continuous permeation of excess plasma lipids into the arterial wall appeared to be an important factor in the development of coronary lesions.

Notes: Abstract Incoherent Z-contrast imaging uses a high-angle annular detector to collect only highly local, incoherently generated scattering with the result that images become dependent on intensities, not phases. No model structures are required for a first-order structure determination, and the images remain intuitively interpretable even at interfaces. Under suitable conditions, incoherently generated inelastic scattering may be collected simultaneously with a large-aperture axial spectrometer, and, by using the Z-contrast image to locate the scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) probe over selected atomic columns, can provide an atomic-resolution chemical analysis. This is demonstrated with reference to an epitaxial CoSi2/Si(100) interface, achieving a 2.7 Å spatial resolution. Recent insights into the growth and relaxation of strained Si-Ge epitaxial films are described, highlighting the role of stress concentrations, and contrasting the case of a free surface with that of a surface constrained by an oxide layer.

Notes: The clinieopathological features of eightpatients with cutaneous disease associated with HTLV-1 infection are reviewed. All were U. K. residents of West Indian extraction, and two are currently alive. Disease remained confined to the skin in two patients. Five patients with a cutaneous prodromal phase developed leukaemia after a medianduration of 124 months (3months-21years), and in one of these combination chemotherapy produced a sustained clinical remission for 20 months. Two patients developed cutaneous disease after remission of their leukaemia.Cutaneous lesions were heterogeneous and included localized papules, a generalized papulonodular eruption, diffuse and localized erythematous plaques, pompholy x-like lesions on the palms and soles, and tumours. The histology of the skin lesions was also variable, and consisted of aheavy dermal infiltrate with lymphocytes, histiocytes, plasmacells, eosinophils and cytologically atypical mono-nuclear cells. Epidermotropism was present in biopsies from five patients. Tumour cells with large, densely staining, pleomorphic nuclei, arranged in rows between collagen bundles, were present in the majority of cases. In one patient the infiltrate also consisted of epithelioid cells and muitinucleated giant cells. Six cases were classified histologically as pleomorphic T-cell lymphoma, and two as cerebriform or mycosis fungoides type.Molecular studies revealed a clonal T-cell population associated withmonoclonal integration of HTLV-1 provirus in tissue DNA from six patients. In two patients HTLV-1 integration was established retrospectively using enzymatic in vitro amplification of a specific HTLV-1 pol genesequence in DNA extracted from paraffin-embedded sections. This study indicates that the clinical and pathological features of HTLV-1-associated cutaneous disease are diverse. Patients may have disease confined to the skin for prolonged periods, either at presentation or following clinical relapse—cutaneous adult T-celll ymphoma. Molecular techniques allow distinction from other types of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, and provide an opportunity for retrospective studies of archival material.

Notes: Cutaneous malignant melanoma was diagnosed in three patients suffering from human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Staging at presentation inversely correlated with absolute CD4 count. In addition, a notably sparse lymphocytic inflammatory response to the melanoma was observed in two cases. Established data on melanoma in non-HIV immunosuppressed patients suggests a poor prognosis for melanoma in HIV disease.

Notes: A study of autoimmune related phenomena in 350 women with histologically confirmed lichen sclerosus et atrophicus revealed that 21.5% had one or more autoimmune related diseases, 21% had one or more first degree relatives with an autoimmune-related disease, 42% had an autoantibody at a titre 〉 1:20, and 59.5% had one or more of these autoimmune-relateda phenomena. No statistically significant differences in the natural history of lichen sclerosus et atrophicus were demonstrated between those patients with autoimmune-related phenomena and those without.
