Description: Results of a detailed study, based on the parametric analysis of activated corrosion products, in primary coolant of a typical pressurized water reactor (PWR) are presented. The parameters influencing time dependent buildup of corrosion product activity (CPA) in primary coolant loop of PWR were identified. The computer program CPAIR was used to accommodate for time dependent corrosion rates. The behaviors of 56Mn, 58Co, and 60Co were studied over the reactor operational time. During the course of normal operation of reactor, the CPA is dominated by 56Mn, while 58Co and 60Co are the predominant radionuclides after reactor shutdown. Parametric study suggests that the total CPA is most sensitive to ion-exchanger removal rates. For a removal rate of 300 cm3-s−1, the specific activity due to 56Mn has the maximum value of 3.552 × 104 Bq-m−3 after 1,000 hours of reactor operation. This value decreases drastically to 8.325 × 103 Bq-m−3 at removal rate of 900 cm3-s−1. Additionally, CPA due to 56Mn, 58Co, and 60Co shows strong dependence on removal rates from the core material surfaces. Variations in the values of radionuclide removal rates from piping surface and radionuclide removal rate from deposition on pipes showed only very small effects on CPA buildup.

Notes: SYNOPSIS. Of 8 fecal specimens from the antelope rat, Tatera indica Hardwicke examined, 4 were found positive for intestinal parasites. Among these was Eimeria taterae sp. n., sporulated oocysts of which are described, their characteristics serving for the diagnosis of this species. Entamoeba coli cysts, as well as ova of Hymenolepis sp. and Trichuris sp., were also found.

Notes: SYNOPSIS. Oocysts of Wenyonella baghdadensis sp. n. were found in the feces of 2 of 12 bandicoot rats Nesokia indica Gray & Hardwicke from the Baghdad area. Sporulated oocysts were subspherical to broadly ellipsoidal, 25.4 (18–22) × 20.8 (15–28) μm, with a 2-layered wall, the outer wall being mammillated, without micropyle, micropylar cap, residuum, or polar granule. Sporozoites were ovoid, 11.8 (9–15) × 8.4 (6–10) μm, with Stieda body and residuum. Two sporozoites in each sporocyst were elongate, with granular cytoplasm and a refractile globule, the other 2 were bean-shaped, without granules or refractile globule. Sporulation time equalled 3 days at 22–24 C. Entamoeba coli and Giardia sp. cysts were also found in 3 rats each.

Description: Background: Asparagus gracilis subspecie of Asparagus capitatus Baker, is described as food and medicine for various ailments. In this study we investigated, its phenolic constituents, in vitro antioxidant potential against various free radicals and anti-urease potential. Methods: Asparagus gracilis aerial parts collected from District Islamabad, Pakistan were extracted with crude methanol which was further fractionated into n-hexane, ethyl acetate, n-butanol and aqueous fraction. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents were estimated for extract and all the derived fractions. Diverse in vitro antioxidants assays such as DPPH, H2O2, [bullet]OH, ABTS, beta-carotene bleaching assay, superoxide radical, lipid peroxidation, reducing power, and total antioxidant capacity were studied to assess scavenging potential. Antiurease activity of methanol extract and its derived fractions was also investigated. HPLC-DAD analysis of crude methanol extract was performed by using different phenolic standards. Results: Ethyl acetate fraction expressed maximum content of flavonoids (240.6 +/- 6.1 mg RE/g dry sample), phenolics (615 +/- 13 mg GAE/g dry sample) and best antioxidant potential among different fractions of crude methanol extract. Hydrogen peroxide assay and hydroxyl, supeoxide, nitric oxide free radicals antioxidant assays as well as beta carotene assay showed significant correlation with flavonoid content while hydrogen peroxide, ABTS and lipid peroxidation assay displayed significant correlation with phenolic content. HPLC analysis showed the presence of important phenolics i.e. catechin (4.04 +/- 0.02 mug/mg sample), caffeic acid (0.89 +/- 0.003 mug/mg sample), rutin (24.58 +/- 0.1 mug/mg sample), myricetin (1.13 +/- 0.07 mug/mg sample) and quercetin (14.91 +/- 0.09 mug/mg sample). Ethyl acetate fraction expressed lowest IC50 in antiurease activity. Correlation analysis of antiurease activity expressed significant correlation with flavonoids (P 〈 0.004) and phenolics (P 〈 0.02) proposing multipotent activity of fractions. Conclusion: These results revealed the presence of some bioactive compound in the ethyl acetate fraction having both antioxidant as well as antiurease potential.
