    Notes: Abstract The exchage equilibrium $$\begin{gathered} {\text{MgSi}}_{{\text{0}}{\text{.5}}} {\text{O}}_{\text{2}} {\text{ + FeO = MgO + FeSi}}_{{\text{0}}{\text{.5}}} {\text{O}}_2 \hfill \\ {\text{olivine oxide oxide olivine}} \hfill \\ \end{gathered}$$ has been used to measure activity-composition relations along the olivine join FeSi0.5O2−MgSi0.5O2 at 1400 K and 1 atm pressure. Equilibrium Fe−Mg partitioning between the two phases was determined by reversing the compositions of olivine coexisting with oxide and matallic iron over the composition range Fo23 to Fo92. A detailed study of the thermodynamic properties of the oxide phase has recently been made by Srečec et al. and we have confirmed their results in the composition range of interest. Application of the oxide data to the exchange equilibrium enables the properties of olivine to be determined. Within experimental uncertainly (Fe, Mg)Si0.5O2 olivine can, at 1400 K, be treated as a symmetric solution with W Fe-Mg o1 of 3.7±0.8 kJ/mol. The data permit the presence of only very slight asymmetry in the series. The data do not support recent assertions that olivine is highly non-ideal (W≈10 kJ/mol) under these conditions.

    Notes: Abstract Loci for two inherited liver diseases, benign recurrent intrahepatic cholestasis (BRIC) and progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis type 1 (PFIC1), have previously been mapped to 18q21 by a search for shared haplotypes in patients in two isolated populations. This paper describes the use of further haplotype evaluation with a larger sample of patients for both disorders, drawn from several different populations. Our assessment places both loci in the same interval of less than 1 cM and has led to the discovery of the PFIC1/BRIC gene, FIC1; this discovery permits retrospective examination of the general utility of haplotype evaluation and highlights possible caveats regarding this method of genetic mapping.

    Notes: Abstract Osteonecrosis of the knee should be differentiated into two main categories: (1) primary, spontaneous, or idiopathic osteonecrosis and (2) secondary osteonecrosis (e.g., secondary to factors such as steroid therapy, systemic lupus erythematosus, alcoholism, Caisson decompression sickness, Gaucher’s disease, hemoglobinopathies, etc.). Spontaneous or primary osteonecrosis of the knee presents with an acute knee pain in elderly patients. It is three times more common in women than in men. Traumatic and vascular theories have been proposed as a causative factor of osteonecrosis of the knee, but the precise etiology still remains speculative. High index of clinical awareness and a good history and physical examination are essential to make an early, accurate diagnosis. Plain radiographs are often normal during the early course of the disease and, in such instances, radioisotope bone scan and magnetic resonance imaging may be helpful. In the early stage of the disease, non-operative treatment is indicated and many patients, if diagnosed early, have a benign course with a satisfactory pain relief and a good knee function. In patients with advanced stage of the disease, treatment options include arthroscopic debridement, curettage or drilling of the lesion, bone grafting, high tibial osteotomy, use of osteochondral allograft, and unicompartmental or total knee arthroplasty. The choice of treatment should be based on factors such as age of the patient, severity of symptoms, activity level and functional demands on the knee, site and stage of the lesion, and extent of deformity and secondary osteoarthritis. The clinical features and treatment of steroid-induced osteonecrosis of the knee are briefly discussed. In recent years, “postmeniscectomy” osteonecrosis has been reported, but at present its prevalence and pathophysiology remain unknown. It is possible that this may be a preexisting condition that was not recognized at the time of initial consultation or osteonecrosis may develop after meniscectomy in occasional cases.

    Notes: Summary The ultimate tensile strength, elasticity modulus and ultimate elongation of tail tendon in rats aged 1–18 months were measured with an Instron tensile apparatus. An increase in all these parameters was observed during the period of maturation, with a later levelling off of the tensile strength and the ultimate elongation. The value of the elasticity modulus attained a maximum during sexual maturation, and then decreased and stabilized.

    Notes: Al/u:GaAs/n:Ga0.52In0.48P inverted-structure (GaAs on top) Schottky diodes on n+ GaAs (001) substrates have been grown by gas source molecular beam epitaxy with several GaAs thicknesses from 10 to 100 nm. The barrier height determined by the capacitance versus voltage method is substantially higher than the barrier height determined by the current versus voltage method. These results suggest that there is a negative interface charge 6–8×1011/cm−2 at the GaAs/Ga0.52In0.48P interface, which is opposite in sign to the interface charge at the normal structure of the Ga0.52In0.48P/GaAs heterojunction reported previously. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Al/i:GaInP/n:GaAs Schottky structures of varying undoped layer thicknesses (100–1000 A(ring)) were grown in situ by gas source molecular beam epitaxy (GSMBE). Effective Schottky barrier heights (φbIV)of 0.87±0.02 eV were determined from the current–voltage (I–V) method with ideality factor of 〈1.05 which is characteristic of thermionic emission but a decrease in barrier height (φbCV) with increasing GaInP thickness as measured by the capacitance–voltage (C–V) method was observed. We found that the plot of φbIV minus φbCV versus GaInP thickness is a straight line. This can be explained by modeling a positive delta sheet charge at the GaInP/GaAs interface which will result in a constant electric field (slope of the above line) with sheet charge estimated to be 5×1011 cm−2. This sheet charge is proposed to be the result of ionized donor states at such interface. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
