Abstract The development of new approaches to improve breeding efficiency of tropical forage grasses is of great importance. The most recently developed techniques to study the type of apomixis and to establish the modes of reproduction in progeny of apomictic plants i.e.: callose deposition test, clearling methods, intact embryo sac analysis, flow cytometry, molecular approaches and the methods of classiacal light and transmission electron microscopy are described and discussed. Cytological and functional aspects of apospory with following aposporous parthenogenesis, and diplospory in grasses are highlighted.
