    Notes: Abstract We study the thermoelectric power of metals containing magnetic impurities with crystal-field split energy levels. Of special interest is the case where the ground state is a nonmagnetic singlet. It is shown that anomalous contributions arise, whose size can be nearly comparable with that found in the Kondo problem. However the mechanism leading to these effects is very different in the present problem, since it results from differences in the thermal population of the impurity levels. Also the anomalous contributions appear in a lower order of perturbation theory than they do in the corresponding Kondo problem calculations.

    Notes: Abstract We investigate surface effects of exchange-induced Van Vleck ferro- and para-magnets. It is pointed out that surface magnetism may exist at temperatures considerably above the bulk Curie temperature and even if the bulk is an intrinsic Van Vleck paramagnet. Model calculations using a point charge model are done for a 6-, 8- and 12-fold coordination of the crystal field ligands. They demonstrate that the magnetic surface properties are usually very different from those of the bulk.

    Notes: Abstract We have investigated the ferromagnetic phase transition and excitation spectrum of systems, such as the rare earths, where the crystalline fields are significant in determining the magnetic properties. Using the full level scheme appropriate to a system ofJ-4 ions in a crystal field of cubic symmetry and assuming a Heisenberg interaction, we have calculated the full temperature- andq-dependence of the dynamic susceptibility within the RPA, both in the paramagnetic and ordered regimes. Variations in behavior, both with changes in crystal field parameter and with changes in magnetic interaction strength are discussed, and emphasis is placed on the limiting case which corresponds to current experiments in the light rare earths.

    Notes: Abstract We present a formalism for treating the problem of impurities in a lattice of magnetic rare earth ions. Latter are subject to a crystalline field and special attention is paid to non-Kramers ions in a singlet ground state. Our calculations are restricted to the paramagnetic regime. We derive the conditions for magnetic localized modes to occur and discuss the appearance of local magnetic instabilities. It is shown that the impurity effects are especially large if the system is close to a magnetic phase transition. Furthermore we compute the influence of impurities on the magnetic transition temperature. For the case of vacancies or nonmagnetic impurities the dependence of the Curie temperature on impurity concentration is derived. It is demonstrated that small amounts of impurities can often completely suppress magnetic ordering.

    Notes: Abstract We investigate the corner spin magnetization of two-dimensional ferromagnetic Ising models in various wedge geometries. Results are obtained for triangular and square lattices by numerical studies on finite wedges using the star-triangle transformation, as well as analytic calculations using corner transfer matrices and a fermionic representation of the row-to-row transfer matrix. The corner magnetizations vanish at the bulk critical temperature Tc with an exponentβ c differing from the bulk exponent. For isotropic systems with free edges we find thatβ c is given simply byβ c =π/2θ, whereθ is the angle at the corner. For apex magnetizations of conical lattices we obtain the strikingly similar resultα a=π/4θ. These formulas apply equally well to anisotropic lattices if the angleθ is interpreted as an effective angle,θ eff, determined by the relative strengths of the interactions.

    Notes: Abstract We study the anisotropic Ising model on a square lattice with free boundary conditions. A simple explicit result is obtained for the surface magnetization of a system which is inhomogeneous near the surface. The corner magnetization is investigated for a 90° corner in a homogeneous anisotropic system. From the numerical results an analytical formula is found.

    Notes: Abstract We study interaction effects in ionic conductors within Kawasaki's kinetic Ising model. The hopping rates are related to properties of the interaction potential. Numerical results from a continued fraction expansion are presented for a one-dimensional chain. They show that the dynamic conductivity depends considerably on the choice of the rates.

    Notes: Abstract The features of order in narrow systems are studied for isotropic square lattice Ising models with general parabolic boundaries. Using Monte Carlo methods, magnetization profiles are calculated which agree very well with the conformal results and scale properly with the geometrical length parameter. The variation of the tip magnetization with temperature is obtained and the predicted stretched exponential form in the critical region is confirmed.
