Notes: Abstract The flow behavior of a highly concentrated solution of a nematic side-chain liquid crystal polymer in a low molecular mass nematic solvent is investigated by deuterium nuclear magnetic resonance with simultaneous measurement of the shear viscosity in a cone-and-plate NMR viscometer. The director orientation under shear in the magnetic field is determined from the quadrupole splitting of the NMR spectra. The orientation as a function of shear rate is analyzed in terms of the Ericksen-Leslie-Parodi theory, yielding the Leslie coefficients μ 2 and μ 3 and thus the flow alignment parameter λ. From the combined analysis of orientation and viscosity as a function of shear rate a total of four independent viscosity parameters is obtained for the nematic solution. The value determined for the flow-alignment parameter, λ≈0.2, and the analysis of the data based on Brochard's theory show that the polymer is of the non-flow-aligning type and has a slightly prolate shape.

Notes: Abstract The transient rheological behavior of several thermotropic nematic side-chain liquid crystal polysiloxanes is investigated. A homopolymer with a low-temperature smectic phase and two random copolymers, one consisting of smectogenic and non-smectogenic mesogens, the other one containing two spacers of different lengths, are studied. All systems are of tumbling type and exhibit oscillations in transient shear stress and first normal stress difference. Only the copolymer with mixed spacers shows a temperature-dependent transition from tumbling to flow-aligning within the nematic phase. The rheological response is slightly different for each polymer. The reactive parameter λ was calculated from the period of the oscillations and compared with rheo-NMR results. For all polymers, λ increases with increasing temperature. The sign of λ, obtained from NMR experiments, is positive for the copolymer with mixed spacers and negative for the other two systems, indicating a prolate shape of the first system and oblate shapes of the other two.

Description: The European Union is currently experiencing a kind of 'renaissance of selfemployment'. As part of this trend, the share of self-employed workers who are operating their enterprises without the support of dependent employees is growing particularly evidently. Members of this category of self-employed are known as 'ownaccount workers'. Proceeding from the theory of transitional labour markets, the authors develop a concept with which mobility rates and mobility patterns can be used to compare the dynamics of own-account work (entries, exits and duration) in five different European countries (Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, United Kingdom and occasionally Sweden). Against this background, the insurance coverage offered to the self-employed as well as that enjoyed by persons entering or exiting the status of selfemployment are then observed and compared across the different countries.

Description: In the past decades self-employment has gained in importance in the majority of EU Member States. In particular the proportion of small and one-person businesses shows an increasing trend. In contrast to the classical research into business start-ups, which usually focuses on sustainability in the sense of the longest possible survival of the enterprises, this paper determinedly goes into the dynamics and flexibility on the labour market of solo-self-employment. In the context of the theory of transitional labour markets, a mobility concept is developed and the dynamics of solo-self-employment in five European countries (Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Great Britain and Sweden) are compared on the basis of mobility rates and mobility patterns (inflows, outflows, durations). The analyses are based on data from the European Employment Sample (1993-2003) and the European Community Household Panel (1994-2001). The results of the analyses show a higher level of employment mobility of the solo-self-employed compared with other employment forms in all of the countries. Almost every year women show a higher rate of mobility than men in all of the countries. Solo-self-employment also concerns far more people over time than the aggregate data for individual years show at first sight. In the country comparison Germany shows the highest mobility rate of solo-self-employed people (since 1996). Finally the paper looks at the institutional protection of mobility and transitions, which differs from country to country. Taking the state pension insurance systems as an example, the paper shows that with regard to social security law, changes in employment status into and out of solo-self-employment are associated with more or less serious specific disadvantages in all of the countries observed. In Germany, the country with the highest mobility rate of solo-self-employed people, these disadvantages are particularly clear. In the sense of the concept of risk management, the strategy of a European social policy should focus on being able to guarantee a minimum of continuous basic protection despite discontinuous employment histories. Depending on the way that the social security systems are organised nationally, there is in this respect a more or less urgent need for action.

Notes: Nonlinear optical properties of push–pull stilbenes based on an alkylamino donor and a strong carbocation acceptor moieties are analyzed in the present study. The highly electron-acceptor character of the carbocation group makes this kind of molecule promising material for second-order nonlinear optical applications. Photoinduced intramolecular charge-transfer is studied by second harmonic generation in solution using time-resolved nondegenerate six-wave mixing. The fully characterized nonlinear dye Disperse Red 1 is used as a reference. The second-order nonlinear properties of the carbocation molecules are compared to a more standard amino–nitro push–pull stilbene. Kerr ellipsometry measurements aiming at a better understanding of the nonlinear excited state spectroscopy of the molecules are also reported. They reveal a very short excited state lifetime of the molecules. Optimization of this lifetime should lead to an improvement of the six-wave mixing response of such compounds. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract The structural phase transition in titanite is correlated with a strong temperature dependence of Raman scattering cross sections and, to a somewhat lesser extent, with shifts of the phonon frequencies. Their quantitative temperature evolution in the low-symmetry phase (P21/a) is compatible with a nearly 2D Ising behaviour with β≈0.12 and T c = 497 K. At temperatures above 860 K, the phonon signals agree with A 2/a symmetry but not in the temperature interval between 497 K and 860 K. In this temperature range new structural states give rise to additional phonon signals. A model based on mobile APBs between slabs of P21/a material, first proposed by van Heurck et al. (1991), is in qualitative agreement with our experimental observations.
