Notes: Abstract Ventricular vagal nerve endings are thought to trigger vasodepressor syncope. Reports of vasodepressor reactions associated with donor bradycardia after cardiac transplantation have led to speculation that vagal reinnervation occurs. We assessed reinnervation status in seven patients 23–36 months (median 24 months) post-transplantation. Heart rate responses to vagal manoeuvres (respiration, Valsalva) and sympathetic stimuli (exercise and injection of tyramine into the coronary artery supplying the sinus node) were measured. All patients underwent 60 min of 60° head-up tilt with foot plate support. During tilt four of the seven had vasodepressor reactions with a fall in mean arterial pressure of 20–90 mmHg. During vasodepression two patients had falls in donor heart rate of 13 and 40% relative to peak heart rate during tilt. These two patients had evidence of functional sympathetic reinnervation. By contrast the two patients without donor bradycardia during vasodepression had only limited or no evidence of sympathetic reinnervation. No patient had consistent evidence of parasympathetic reinnervation as judged by the heart rate response to vagal manoeuvres. Headup tilt can thus produce vasodepressor reactions with donor bradycardia after cardiac transplantation in the absence of consistent evidence of vagal reinnervation. Left ventricular nerve endings may not be the only mediators of tilt-induced vasodepressor reactions in man. Donor bradycardia during vasodepression may reflect sympathetic withdrawal and not vagal reinnervation.

Notes: Abstract Due to current technical difficulties and changing cellular conditions, the measurement of anaerobic and recovery energy expenditure remains elusive. During rest and low-intensity steady-state exercise, indirect calorimetric measurements successfully represent energy expenditure. The same steady-state O2 uptake methods are often used to describe the O2 deficit and excess post-oxygen consumption (EPOC): 1 l O2 = 5 kcal = 20.9 kJ. However, an O2 deficit plus exercise O2 uptake measurement ignores energy expenditure during recovery, and an exercise O2 uptake plus EPOC measurement misrepresents anaerobic energy expenditure. An alternative solution has not yet been proposed. Anaerobic glycolysis and mitochondrial respiration are construed here as a symbiotic union of metabolic pathways, each contributing independently to energy expenditure and heat production. Care must be taken when using O2 uptake alone to quantify energy expenditure because various high-intensity exercise models reveal that O2 uptake can lag behind estimated energy demands or exceed them. The independent bioenergetics behind anaerobic glycolysis and mitochondrial respiration can acknowledge these discrepancies. Anaerobic glycolysis is an additive component to an exercise O2 uptake measurement. Moreover, it is the assumptions behind steady-state O2 uptake that do not permit proper interpretation of energy expenditure during EPOC; 1 l O2≠ 20.9 kJ. Using both the O2 deficit and a modified EPOC for interpretation, rather than one or the other, leads to a better method of quantifying energy expenditure for higher intensity exercise and recovery.

Notes: Abstract LF‐Muon Spin Relaxation data are reported for the organometallic compounds Pb(C6H5)4, (C6H6)Cr(CO)3 and (C5H5)2Ru. In each case the change in relaxation rate with temperature shows a peak analogous to the T_1 minimum in NMR. The activation parameters were calculated, and the mechanism of muon spin relaxation in the case of (C6H6)Cr(CO)3 is shown to be the reorientation motion of the benzene ring.

Notes: Abstract The aim of this work has been to study various muonium containing radicals not previously studied by the μSR technique with a view to determining the effect of a bound muonium atom on the radical structures as compared with their hydrogen analogues. In the first group, muonium addition to the aromatic rings of styrene, phenylacetylene and allylbenzene are compared with the more important addition to the substituent double or triple bonds. In the second group, β-muonium substituted cyclopentyl and cycloheptyl radicals are compared with their protiated versions. In the third group, radicals obtained following muonium addition to trimethylsilylethene, tri (methoxysilyl)-ethene, and 1-chloro-2, 2-dimethylethene are discussed with respect to the competition between the β-muonium atom, and β-silicon or β-chlorine substituents for control of the conformation of the radical.

Notes: Abstract μSR spectra from a metal carbonyl compound are reproted for the first time. The metal cluster compound Cs2[Os10C(CO)24] shows a temperature dependent signal for implanted muons with the onset of motional narrowing at ca. 200 K. Also observed is a probable change in the width within the temperature range 40–140 K. A tentative assignment is provided for the muon sites.
