    Notes: Abstract In this paper, efficient VLSI architectures for orthogonal wavelet transforms with respect to common applications are presented. One class of orthogonal wavelet transforms is the singlewavelet transform which is based on one scaling and one wavelet function. An important application of this transform is signal denoising for which an efficient VLSI implementation and layout is derived in this paper. Contrary to singlewavelets, orthogonal multiwavelets are based on several scaling and wavelet functions. Since they allow properties like compact support, regularity, orthogonality and symmetry, simultaneously, being impossible in the singlewavelet case, multiwavelets are well suited bases for image compression applications. With respect to an efficient implementation of these orthogonal wavelet transforms, approximations of the exact rotation angles of the corresponding wavelet lattice filters are used. The approximations are realized by elementary CORDIC rotations. This method reduces the number of shift and add operations significantly with no influence on the good performance of the transforms. VLSI architectures for the computationally cheap transforms and related implementation aspects are discussed and design examples from architectural level down to layout are given.

    Description: In today’s business environment, team work is omnipresent. But might teams be more prone toward non-compliance with laws and regulations than single individuals despite imminent neg-ative consequences of uncovering misconduct? The recent prevalence of corporate delinquencies gives rise to this concern. In our laboratory experiment, we investigate the determinants of teams’ compliance behavior. In particular, we disentangle the effect of deciding jointly as a team of two from sharing the economic consequences among both team members. Our findings provide evidence that teams are substantially less compliant than individuals are. This drop in compliance is driven by the joint, rather than the individual, liability of team members. In contrast, whether subjects make their decisions alone or together does not influence the overall compliance rate. When coordinating their compliance decision teams predominately discuss the risk of getting caught in an audit, and team decision-making is characterized by behavioral spillovers between team members. Holding each team member fully liable is a promising means to deter them from going astray.

    Description: We conduct a laboratory experiment of self-serving deceptive behavior and exogenously vary the level of reflection time. We find that time pressure leads to more honesty compared to sufficient contemplation time. Moreover, more reflection time increases awareness of the misreporting opportunity. However, it has no effect on the conscious decision of whether to misreport or not. Due to subjects' lack of awareness under time pressure we conclude that misreporting is not the intuitive response.

    Description: Time is a crucial determinant of deception, since some misreporting opportunities come as a surprise and require an intuitive decision while others allow for extensive reflection time. To be able to pursue a deceptive strategy, however, a subject must be aware of the misreporting opportunity. This paper provides experimental evidence on the role of the time dimension for dishonest decision-making and for the cognition process of the chance to deceive. We conduct a laboratory experiment of self-serving deceptive behavior which combines two exogenously varied levels of reflection time with a cognition process about the deception opportunity. We find that time pressure leads to more honesty compared to sufficient contemplation time. More importantly, decomposing misreporting into its two components, i.e., the cognition process of the misreporting opportunity and the conscious decision to misreport, reveals that more reflection time increases awareness of the misreporting opportunity. However, more time has no effect on the conscious decision of whether to misreport or not. Due to subjects’ lack of awareness under time pressure we conclude that honesty is the intuitive response.
