Notes: This paper addresses the issue of assessing the technical expertise within the organization of a large firm.It presents the results of a study that examined the technical competence of the human resources of a large, high technology company. Various data about the company's technical professionals (engineers, researchers, etc.) were systematically identified and collected.A general framework for the Strategic Management of Technology is first presented to explain the importance of constructing a firm's portfolio of technologies and competence. The design and construction methodology of the “Who's Who in Technology” (WWT) is then briefly described. Several possible uses of this tool are subsequently mentioned.Analyses across the technical staff population using the WWT data base are then presented in greater detail. They show how one may understand (1) the accumulation and utilization of the firm's competence over time, (2) the distribution of expertise within the organization, (3) the level of expertise reached, (4) the age distribution of the technical professionals, (5) the nature of the work experience of the technical staff, etc.The WWT scheme appears to be a practical and enlightening way to gain insight into a firm's portfolio of technical competence, while also providing the basis for a more appropriate methodology in technical human resource planning. Some limits of the tool are finally presented and discussed.

Description: Linked to diverse biological processes, groundwater ecosystems deliver essential services to mankind, the most important of which is the provision of drinking water. In contrast to surface waters, ecological aspects of groundwater systems are ignored by the current European Union and national legislation. Groundwater management and protection measures refer exclusively to its good physicochemical and quantitative status. Current initiatives in developing ecologically sound integrative assessment schemes by taking groundwater fauna into account depend on the initial classification of subsurface bioregions. In a large scale survey, the regional and biogeographical distribution patterns of groundwater dwelling invertebrates were examined for many parts of Germany. Following an exploratory approach, our results underline that the distribution patterns of invertebrates in groundwater are not in accordance with any existing bioregional classification system established for surface habitats. In consequence, we propose to develope a new classification scheme for groundwater ecosystems based on stygoregions. Scientific Reports 2 doi: 10.1038/srep00673

Description: To a certain extent, adhesive bonding of measurement equipment is very common in science and technology, e.g. adhesive bonding of small-scale strain gauges. Adhesive bonding of the entire equipment for a fully autonomous pile driving monitoring of an impact-driven large-scale foundation structure for an offshore wind farm is a completely new application method. Several offshore wind farms are currently under construction in the North and Baltic Seas. Impact pile driving of the large-scale foundations usually causes much louder noise than permitted by regulations, so methods for noise reduction are necessary. Geotechnical engineers of the TU Braunschweig are investigating combined methods for reducing that noise, and in 2014 they had the opportunity to install measurement equipment for the investigation of dynamic pile deflections during pile driving into three of in total eighty monopiles (length: 60 m, diameter: 6 m) of an offshore wind farm in the German North Sea. Due to certification issues conventional methods of fastening such as screwing or welding were not permitted. Instead, adhesive bonding of all parts (sensors, cables, shielding, recorder/computer) was successfully applied and withstood impact driving with several thousand blows of up to 1200 g (earth gravity). The authors would like to present the concept and preceding tests of the adhesive bonding applied within the research project ‘triad’.

Description: Duplication of bacterial chromosomes is initiated via the assembly of two replication forks at a single defined origin. Forks proceed bi-directionally until they fuse in a specialised termination area opposite the origin. This area is flanked by polar replication fork pause sites that allow forks to enter but not to leave. The precise function of this replication fork trap has remained enigmatic, as no obvious phenotypes have been associated with its inactivation. However, the fork trap becomes a serious problem to cells if the second fork is stalled at an impediment, as replication cannot be completed, suggesting that a significant evolutionary advantage for maintaining this chromosomal arrangement must exist. Recently, we demonstrated that head-on fusion of replication forks can trigger over-replication of the chromosome. This over-replication is normally prevented by a number of proteins including RecG helicase and 3’ exonucleases. However, even in the absence of these proteins it can be safely contained within the replication fork trap, highlighting that multiple systems might be involved in coordinating replication fork fusions. Here, we discuss whether considering the problems associated with head-on replication fork fusion events helps us to better understand the important role of the replication fork trap in cellular metabolism.
