Comparison of highly oriented pyrolytic and ordinary graphite as polarizers of Mo Kα radiation in EDXRF

Highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) and ordinary graphite were compared with respect to detection limits as excitation targets in a triaxial EDXRF set-up. HOPG as a Bragg polarizer of Mo Kα x-rays did not show appreciable advantages over ordinary graphite as a Barkla scatterer. Under relatively wide collimation conditions necessary to obtain a sufficient count rate in analytical practice, HOPG acts mainly as a Barkla scatterer.
