    Notes: The influence of the electrodes on the dielectric behavior and especially on the leakage behavior of SrTiO3 thin films was investigated by impedance analysis. Based on measurements on thin films with different electrode materials the work function of these materials was found to determine the leakage currents. The main conduction mechanism is thermionic emission of electrons from the cathode into the SrTiO3 thin film. The current–voltage characteristics are influenced by the Schottky effect. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract The field enhanced average conductivity in grain boundary space charge depletion layers in acceptor-doped SrTiO3 ceramics was investigated by impedance analysis in the time domain. The dependence of the grain boundary conductivity on the acceptor concentration, the temperature and the field dependence are discussed and interpreted in terms of a Schottky diffusion model combined with the influence of accumulated oxygen vacancies at the GB interface.

    Notes: Abstract We report on the epitaxial growth of magnetoresistive La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 and La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 thin films by chemical solution deposition. Thin films were prepared by spin-coating of single-crystal LaAlO3 (100) substrates with precursor solutions of different concentrations and crystallized at 850°C. The structure of the thin film was found to be influenced by the concentration of the spin-coating solution. The thin film structure and epitaxy was clearly improved by reducing the concentration of the precursor solution. All thin films displayed excellent electrical properties such as a low resistivity and very high metal-insulator transition temperatures T MI .

    Notes: Ferroelectrics are among the most advanced materials for non-volatile storageapplications. Their two thermodynamically equivalent groundstates of spontaneous polarization canbe toggled between by an external electric field. We present recent progress in the fabrication,registration, manipulation and characterization of nanoscale ferroelectrics. Chemical solutiondeposition is adapted to a pre-registration process by e-beam lithography to fabricate registeredferroelectric nanostructures below 100 nm width. A post-processing by chemical mechanicalpolishing either for embedded or free grains modifies the aspect ratio thus controlling the coercivefield distribution of nanoferroelectrics. We also discuss some very recent findings of the complexinteraction of field and piezoelectric tensor in a real piezoresponse force microscope. This methodrequires a comprehensive treatment of all contributions to tell apart extrinsic from intrinsic effects

    Notes: In this paper, lead hafnate titanate (PHT) was derived by chemical solution deposition (CSD) and characterized as a thin film material. The thin films were tested for the usage as a ferroelectric thin film in view of Ferroelectric Random Access Memory (FRAM) devices and compared with an equivalent lead zirconate titanate (PZT) thin film, which was prepared under the same conditions. After determining the thickness and the morphology of the PHT films, electronic measurements were performed to investigate this material as a promising candidate in view of FRAM applications due to failure mechanisms like fatigue and imprint.

    Notes: The purpose of the present investigation is to describe the influence of the processing parameters on the dielectric behavior of manganese-doped Ba(Ti1−xZrx)O3ceramics, particularly variations in the small-signal aging rate, temperature characteristic, and hysteresis. In this paper, the aging behavior of base-metal electrode materials above the temperature of the permittivity maximum (TM), including the influence of the zirconium content and annealing conditions, is described for the first time. The aging rate at temperatures greater than TM decreases as the oxygen partial pressure increases during annealing and the zirconium content increases, whereas the aging rate exhibits a maximum at temperatures much less than TM. The behavior is explained in terms of a diffuse phase transition. Hysteresis-loop deformation is observed during aging.

    Notes: A two-dimensional numerical model that predicts the reliability of multilayer capacitors (MLCs) during soldering and bending is presented. The Weibull parameters used in the model are based on measurements of soldered MLC devices. The preheating and soldering temperatures have a dominant impact on the failure probability, in comparison to the thickness of the nickel layer, the soft solder geometry, and the number of inner electrodes. Comparison of calculated and measured reliability of three MLC sizes leads to the assumption that residual stresses due to the manufacturing process or size-related microstructure are important.

    Notes: The opportunities are introduced to calculate the electrical, mechanical, and thermal couplings of ceramic multilayer capacitors (MLCs) with the finite-element method. The results may lead to improvements in the production, integration, and operation of MLCs. In this paper, a comparison is given of calculations and measurements of electromechanical resonances in the impedance spectra of MLCs. The simulation of defective capacitors with three different types of assumed faults reveals the changes in the impedance spectra due to these defects. This allows the prediction of flaws in MLCs based on measurement of the impedance spectra.
