    Notes: Abstract It is generally believed that recombination by sexual reproduction is unfavourable in constant environments but is of adaptive value under changing environmental conditions. To test this theory, experimental populations of yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) were set up and maintained at different levels of environmental heterogeneity. Recombination was estimated by determining sporulation rates. Sporulation rates first increased in populations living in highly variable environments, but after some time began to decrease. The decrease started last and was slowest in populations which were maintained under the same conditions for a sufficiently long time, to allow some adaptation of the gene pool to the respective environment. Patterns of genotypic variability could not be interpreted in such simple terms, but there was a statistically significant correlation between sporulation rate and genotypic variability. This correlation is to be expected because recombination generates genotypic variability. Summing up, recombination by sexual reproduction is advantageous in changing environments if the population can track the changes in the environment by changing its genotypic structure.

    Description / Table of Contents: Sommario Numerosi modelli animali di crisi epilettiche sono stati impiegati per ricercare nuovi farmaci antiepilettici utili per il trattamento delle epilessie umane. Attualmente nessuno dei tests di laboratorio è in grado, da solo, di stabilire il valore entiepilettico di una determinata sostanza, o di predirne l'utilità clinica. Tra i molti modelli animali disponibili quelli più comunemente impiegati per selezionare nuovi farmaci antiepilettici sono il test di risposta all'elettroshock massimale (MES) e alla somministrazione subcutanea di pentilenetetrazolo (scPTZ). Il presente capitolo passa in rassegna la metodologia dei due tests, le loro limitazioni e il contributo che essi hanno formito in passato e tutt'ora forniscono alla scoperta di nuovi farmaci antiepilettici.
    Notes: Abstract A number of widely different animal seizure models have been employed in the search for new and novel anticonvulsant drugs useful for the tratment of human epilepsy. At present, no single laboratory test will, in itself, establish the presence or absence of anticonvulsant activity or fully predict the clinical potential of a test substance. Of the many available animal models, the maximal electroshock (MES) and subcutaneous pentylenetetrazol (scPTZ) tests still represent the most commonly employed models for the routine screening and identification of new, anticonvulsant drugs. This chapter will briefly describe how these two tests are conducted, their limitations and how they have contributed in the past and to the present day anticonvulsant drug discovery process.

    Notes: Summary An ocellus of the horseshoe crab, Limulus polyphemus, has been serially sectioned for light and electron microscopy, its sensory cells have been indexed, and the interconnections of a third of these traced. The ocellus contains 155 retinula cells and 26 arhabdomeric cells, which are secondary sensory neurons. Of these, 55 retinula cells constitute 7 quasi-ommatidial assemblages, each innervated by at least one and a total of 9 arhabdomeric cells. When known electrotonic coupling patterns are compared with gap-junctional connections, retinula cells sensitive to visible or ultraviolet light can be tentatively identified. Retinula cell axons contribute collaterals to a synaptic plexus, in which the arhabdomeric cells apparently do not participate.

    Notes: Abstract An immunosensing system is described for the detection of specific antibodies in human sera using a piezoelectric immunosensor and a flow through system. A quartz crystal microbalance theory, regarding mass and viscoelastic effects in multilayer systems, which is derived from the Mason circuit, gives the theoretical background for the interpretation of measurement data obtained from an oscillator circuit. An acoustic model for the antigen/antibody reaction is described (Part 1). An immunospecific detector was developed by immobilizing synthetic peptides or recombinant proteins, comprising major diagnostic epitops of HIV, on the surface of the transducer. Attempts have been made to use the sensor for the initial screening for antibodies, specific against the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), in human serum samples. Results are obtained within a few minutes and with a selectivity comparable to a licensed HIV ELISA (Part II).

    Notes: Zusammenfassung Es wird eine neue Methode zur Bestimmung von Sulfat in Anwesenheit eines großen Überschusses von Chromat bzw. Dichromat gegeben, die schnell und unkompliziert ist. Durch Anwendung von konz. Überchlorsäure wird das störende Chromat als Chromsäureanhydrid abgetrennt und im Filtrat nach Neutralisation und schwachem Ansäuern das Sulfat wie üblich als Bariumsulfat bestimmt. Sehr geringe Sulfatmengen können nephelometrisch ermittelt werden.
