Notes: Abstract Boron and carbon on the surface of silicon wafers in ordinary atmospheres were measured by activation with the10B(d,n)11C and12Cd(d,n)13N reaction, respectively. Two sample plates in intimate contact were bombarded by deuterons, and the11C or13N formed at the inside surfaces were measured after chemical separation. From 1.2·1013 to 8.4·1013 atoms/cm2 of boron and from 2.4·1014 to 6.1·1015 atoms/cm2 of carbon were found ,and the sensitivity was extended down to 5·1012 and 3·1012 atoms/cm2 for boron and carbon, respectively.

Notes: Abstract Seven representative wood species constituting caatinger forest were chosen to analyze Sc, V, Cr, Mn, Fe and Co, as well as Na, Mg and Al, by instrumental neutron activation analysis. In most cases of the soil, the concentration of the element tended to be higher with the increase of depth. Generally, the element partition from soil to root was higher in Mg and Co, whereas V showed higher partition rate from root to bark. The correlation within the elements was higher in the order of soil, root and bark.

Notes: Abstract The sulfur activity-composition relation of β-Ni3±xS2 was determined between 600 and 750°C by thermogravimetry using H2S/H2 gas mixtures. The existence of β1- and β2-Ni3±xS2 was confirmed. The chemical diffusion coefficient of β-Ni3±xS2 was measured as a function of composition at 650°, 700°, and 750°C using thermogravimetry for the reequilibration reaction. The chemical diffusion coefficients varied with composition and showed a maximum at stoichiometric composition, Ni3S2. The activation energy for chemical diffusion was determined as Ea=31.3 Kcal·mole−1 for stoichiometric Ni3S2. Electrical conductivity of β-Ni3+-xS2 was determined as a function of composition at 650°C. The electrical conductivity increased with increasing the mole fraction of sulfur. The temperature dependence of the electrical conductivity of Ni3S2 was measured between 50 and 750°C and found to exhibit metallic behavior.

Notes: Effects of Zr and Nb on magnetic properties and thermal stability were studied for Nd-Fe-B bonded magnets. Bonded magnets with a composition of Ndx(Fe94-x-y)B6Ty, where T=Zr and Nb; x=11.0, 11.5, and 12.0; y=0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0; were prepared by using melt spun ribbons. The addition of Zr up to 0.5 at .% increased the (BH)max of the bonded magnets, and further addition of Zr decreased the (BH)max at each Nd content level. Hci increased monotonously with an increase in Zr. (BH)max and Hci of the Nb containing bonded magnets also showed similar behavior. Irreversible flux loss after exposure at 180 °C for 1000 h significantly reduced with an increase in the Zr content at each Nd content level. Both the structural flux loss and the thermal fluctuation flux loss were reduced with an increase in the Zr content. An irreversible flux loss of about 5% was obtained when the Nd and Zr content were 11.5 at .% and 2.0 at. %, respectively. A similar value of irreversible flux loss was also obtained in Nb containing bonded magnets with the same composition. It was found that the oxygen pickup by the bonded magnets during the heat resistant test was well correlated to the structural loss of the bonded magnets. A structural flux loss of less than 3% was obtained when the oxygen pickup was less than 0.4 wt. % for both additives. SEM studies revealed that the grain size of the 2-14-1 phase observed in the additive-containing specimens was finer than that of the base alloy.

Notes: Abstract The mouseRad51 gene is a mammalian homologue of theEscherichia coli recA and yeastRAD51 genes, both of which are involved in homologous recombination and DNA repair in mitosis and meiosis. The expression of mouseRad51 mRNA was examined in synchronized mouse m5S cells. TheRad51 transcript was observed from late G1 phase through to M phase. During the period of late G1-S-G2, the RAD51 proteins were observed exclusively in nuclei. Activation by mitogens of T cell and B cell proliferation in spleen induced the expression ofRad51 mRNA. By immunohistochemical analyses, the mouse RAD51 protein was detected in proliferating cells: spermatogonia in testis, immature T cells in thymus, germinal center cells of the secondary lymphatic nodules of spleen and intestine, follicle cells in ovary and epithelial cells in uterus and intestine. It was also expressed in spermatocytes during early and mid-prophase of meiosis and in resting oocytes before maturation. Thus, mouseRad51 expression is closely related to the state of cell proliferation and is presumably involved in DNA repair coupled with DNA replication, as well as in meiotic DNA recombination in spermatocytes.

Notes: Abstract High-order Raman parametric generation was excited in the visible and near-IR regions on the Stokes and anti-Stokes lines of Y3Al5O12 single crystals and nanocrystalline ceramics. All generation components, as well as the χ(3)-active vibrational modes of these materials, were identified. In connection with the extensive use of the Nd3+-and Yb3+-doped Y3Al5O12 crystals and, in recent years, nanocrystalline Y3Al5O12: Nd3+ ceramics in laser physics and quantum electronics, the applied aspect of the observed nonlinear properties of these materials is outlined.
