Notes: Remarkable advances in robotics and intelligent technology have made unmanned production realisable. Based on the off-line robot concept proposed in our first paper, an off-line robot and peripheral devices have been developed for the realisation of unmanned production. The developed robot has a power-wheeled steering (PWS) type mobile platform on which a double-arm manipulator is installed. In order to detect and recognise 3D objects, double CCD cameras are mounted on the top of the robot. Two types of robot end-effectors are developed to handle workpieces and conduct trouble shooting actions. A newly developed production trouble simulator is very useful in simulating and resolving production troubles. A virtual pilot plant for production composed of the off-line robot, two on-line robots, a vibrating bowl feeder, a belt conveyor and a production trouble simulator has been constructed and tests for production simulation have been undertaken. In this paper, autonomous navigation of the developed robot in the virtual pilot plant is investigated. Then a search for faulty parts in a parts feeder using the developed real-time image extraction method is carried out.

Notes: In order to deal with labour shortages due to the predicted low birth rate in the 21st century, and create a more friendly production system, we propose a robotic system which assists production in flexible manufacturing environments. In this robotic system off-line robots are proposed to replace or reduce the need for human workers at the shop-floor. The off-line robots carry out assisting or service tasks for the on-line robots which perform manufacturing tasks at the production line or site. In this paper, first, an analysis of a conventional automatic production system using robots is described. Secondly, the concept of a robotic production system using two types of robots is proposed. Thirdly, a methodology for the realisation of the proposed concept and some technical results are presented. Finally, fault recovery using off-line robots and peripheral technology are discussed.

Notes: Summary Multi-variable regression analysis between lnkw, c (in retention equation lnk′=lnkw+cCb) and molecular structure parameters, including hydrophobicity, electric effect, field effect and position-specific effect constant, was carried out with O-ethyl, O-aryl and N-isopropyl phosphoroamidothioates as test solutes. With these quantitative relationships, the retention behaviour of these solutes for different mobile phase compositions was predicted. The results showed that there are only 26.7% of total, experimentally measured, capacity factors with relative deviations larger than 5% and only 2.2% with deviations larger than 10%, which means that it is possible to apply the method reported to predict retention values for qualitative purposes for different mobile phase compositions.

Notes: Abstract Quinghai Hu is a large, high-altitude, saline lake in north-western China, and supports a fishery based on an endemic species of naked carp (‘snow trout’). The fish take seven years to attain maturity and a marketable weight of 300 g, and have a lifespan of 14–21 years under the present fishery regime. They seasonally migrate from the lake to spawn over the gravel beds of inflowing rivers, but these areas have been reduced by weirs and irrigation diversions and recruitment may have declined. The population may have been affected also by a 1.85-m fall in the lake level over the past 30 years, and by associated changes in salinity. The fishery was opened to large-scale exploitation in 1958. Yields declined sharply (max. 28,523 tonnes, 1960) as the larger, older fish were removed, and then more slowly (min. 2523 tonnes, 1983). Since 1987 the fish factory has been limited to an annual quota of 1200 tonnes, taken by a fleet of four pair trawlers. Another 800 tonnes are taken by licensed fishermen, mainly using gill nets, and perhaps 1000 tonnes are taken illegally. The estimated total catch in 1992 was 3000 tonnes. New trawlers introduced in 1989–90 substantially increased the factory's catch per unit effort, and in 1990 the quota was virtually filled in one month in a zone within 20 km of the factory. Although this could suggest that the stocks will be conserved if the quota is retained, at least half of the catch in 1989–92 consisted of immature individuals. Trawling operations recently were suspended following a further decline in the catch after 1992. While the new trawlers are capable of a major increase in effort, neither the changing environment, the fish stocks or the present markets favour intensified pressure. Gillnets may provide better control over the minimum size limit and may cause less damage than trawling. Other options to improve the viability and profitability of the fishery include improvements in handling, processing and marketing. Failure to develop the fishery may encourage attempts to introduce exotic fish, at some risk to survival of the local species.

Notes: We have observed an extremely narrow absorption spectrum due to bound-to-continuum transition in GaAs/AlxGa1−xAs multiple quantum wells (MQWs). Its linewidth is only about one tenth of the values reported previously. Our calculation indicates that the broadening of the excited state in the continuum has little contribution to the absorption linewidth. We have grown a sample whose MQW region contains two kinds of wells with a minor thickness inhomogeneity. Its resultant absorption linewidth is six times as large as that of homogeneous well sample, which is in good agreement with our theoretical analysis. Thus we can suggest that the wider absorption spectra reported by many authors may be due to the well width inhomogeneity. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Description: Silicon batteries have attracted much attention in recent years due to their high theoretical capacity, although a rapid capacity fade is normally observed, attributed mainly to volume expansion during lithiation. Here, we report for the first time successful synthesis of Si/void/SiO2/void/C nanostructures. The synthesis strategy only involves selective etching of SiO2 in Si/SiO2/C structures with hydrofluoric acid solution. Compared with reported results, such novel structures include a hard SiO2-coated layer, a conductive carbon-coated layer, and two internal void spaces. In the structures, the carbon can enhance conductivity, the SiO2 layer has mechanically strong qualities, and the two internal void spaces can confine and accommodate volume expansion of silicon during lithiation. Therefore, these specially designed dual yolk-shell structures exhibit a stable and high capacity of 956 mA h g−1 after 430 cycles with capacity retention of 83%, while the capacity of Si/C core-shell structures rapidly decreases in the first ten cycles under the same experimental conditions. The novel dual yolk-shell structures developed for Si can also be extended to other battery materials that undergo large volume changes. Scientific Reports 5 doi: 10.1038/srep10908
