    Notes: Abstract The usefulness and the limitations of panoramic radiography for the diagnosis of temporomandibular (TM) disorders were evaluated. The condylar shape appearance and the osseous changes were evaluated in asymptomatic 150 subjects (control subjects) and in 142 patients with the TM disorders who were examined by panoramic radiography. The position of the flattening and the osseous changes including osteophyte, bone erosion and osteosclerosis were objectively analyzed to determine the condylar shape. The incidence of the composite flattening type, which exhibits flattening on both the anterior and on other surfaces, was three times higher in the TM patients compared to controls. Thus, this composite type may indicate the presence of TM disorders. The incidence of osseous changes in the patients with TM disorders was significantly higher than controls and increased further in the group with the permolar and/or molar missing. This suggests that the occlusion of molar, teeth is an important factor related to the development of the TM disorders. It was concluded that panoramic radiography was useful for detecting TM disorders, at least in those with osseous changes or flattening.

    Notes: Abstract To assess the usefulness of CT images for the diagnosis of suspected odontogenic maxillary sinusitis, 52 patients with maxillary sinusitis who had received CT examination were retrospectively analyzed. maxillary sinus ostium was established on coronal CT image in 20 out of 55 lesions in those 52 patients. However, a considerable number of patients who had inflammatory disease not only in the maxillary sinus but also in other paranasal sinuses (38/55) or in the nasal meatus (34/55) were included in those 52 patients. Concerning the opening of the ostium, the clinical diagnosis is frequently different from the diagnosis made using CT. The CT findings of the maxillary sinus ostium, nasal meatus and other paranasal sinuses were thus important in planning the treatment for patients with maxillary sinusitis in dentistry, as in otorhinolaryngology.

    Notes: Lithium diisopropylamide in the presence of diisopropylamine initiates the polymerization of isoprene to form oligomers with one diisopropylamino end group. The molecular weight of the oligomers formed is strongly dependent on the mole ratio diisopropylamine/lithium diisopropylamide. For instance, more than 70% of the oligomers obtained have an average molecular weight of 1 000, provided the reaction is run with an initial mole ratio 1:2 of amine to amide. Reactivities of several allylamine derivatives including the oligomers with amino end groups were studied in regard to their ability as chain transfer agents in the anionic polymerization of isoprene. According to the 1H NMR analysis, these oligomers contain 90% 1,4- and 10% 3,4-enchainments.

    Notes: Some significant features of a novel organometallic complex, [{MeOCH2CH(Me)OZnOCH(Me)CH2OMe}2 · {EtZnOCH(Me)CH2OMe}2] (3), as an enantiomorphic catalyst for stereoselective polymerization of propylene oxide (PO) are reported. Populations of triad tacticities of poly(PO) obtained with complex 3 as catalyst fit nicely with the theoretical curves of the one-parameter equations for the enantiomorphic catalyst sites model. The observed σ2 value was much higher than that observed with other organozinc complexes (1 and 2) reported previously. Every molecule of complex 3 was proved to exist as a monomeric form in benzene and its structural feature was retained in solution even after the initiation stage of polymerization. The number of active sites of complex 3 for the oxirane polymerization was determined to be one by determining the 1-methoxy-2-propanol liberated from the unreacted methoxypropoxy groups. The initiation and propagation mechanisms are discussed.

    Notes: Lithium monoalkylamide, in the presence of monoalkylamine, was found to initiate the polymerization of isoprene to form oligoisoprenes. The molecular weight distribution of products formed in the lithium isobutylamide initiated isoprene oligomerization strongly depends on the initial mole ratio [Isoprene]0/[Amine]0/[Amide]0; with an initial mole ratio of 60/1/8, oligomers with a number-average molecular weight of about 800 were obtained. The presence of N,N,N′,N′-tetramethylethylenediamine in the reaction system was found to be effective for the selective formation of secondary amino-ended oligoisoprenes.

    Notes: Lithium diisopropylamide, in the presence of diisopropylamine, initiates the polymerization of isoprene to form oligomers having one diisopropylamino end group. These oligomers 1 a, formed in the early stages of the reaction, are considered to carry out the chain termination (or metalation) reaction. Results of mechanistic studies of the chain termination (or metalation) reaction in isoprene oligomerization in the presence of various types of allylamine homologues, as low molecular weight model compounds for 1 a are presented. The presence of a cis-methyl group with respect to the amino methylene group was found to be essential for the low molecular weight model compounds to exhibit large reactivity in the chain transfer reaction. Oligomers with amino end groups neither have to possess a cis-methyl group nor an allylamine structure to be active. A number of results showed that the driving force for the metalation reaction of oligomers with amino end groups is different in nature from that of the lowmolecular-weight allylamine homologues. A possible mechanism for the metalation reaction of these oligomers is discussed in terms of a hydrophobic interaction with the growing chain.
