    Notes: Bend and shear tests were used to characterize the improvement in impact behavior ofvarious ultrahigh carbon steel laminated composites. These tests turned out to deliver much moreuseful information about the mechanical properties of the laminates than the Charpy impact testsand were especially interesting for characterization of laminates of very high toughness values.The toughness of the various laminates was controlled by the rolling conditions that determinedthe quality of the bond and the appearance of delamination by the interfaces. The bend test allowsdetermination of yield and maximum stresses, absorbed energy and permits graphical visualizationof layer fracture and delaminations as testing proceeds. The shear test allows mechanicalcharacterization of the bond quality between layers, permitting prediction of possibledelaminations, and therefore, the mechanical properties of the layered material

    Notes: The presence of surface compressive residual stress in a laminated material enhance theresistance of the component by reducing the stress intensity factors acting on the cracks -eithernatural or artificial- existing in the surface.Fissures in the form of cone crack are often generated by blunt contact in service, that can affect thefunctionality as well as the strength of the material.In this work, a two-steps analysis of the effect of residual stresses on the geometry of cone crack andhow this change in geometry influences the far-field strength of the material was performed bymeans of a Finite Elements model and of experimental observations.In the first part, an automatic incremental model was formulated, which allowed to establish thecrack shapes that were used in the second part for simple four-points test models.It was observed that residual stresses change considerably the crack shape, with importantimplications in the design of contact-damage tolerance, and that this reflects on correspondingchanges in the strength

    Notes: In this paper we try to summarize the research activities of the PM group in theUniversity Carlos III of Madrid. This research group is highly devoted to PM activities coveringdifferent fields (both under the point of view of the materials and the processes). In the PM labpowders can be produced by spray pyrolysis, mechanical alloying and water/gas atomization. Thesepowders can be processed by pressing and sintering, powder injection moulding, isostaticpressing,… Sintering facilities cover vacuum and gas controlled sintering. Regarding the materials,in the group we have different research lines covering low alloyed steels, stainless steels, HSS,ferrites, metal matrix composite (Al and Fe base), Ti, intermetallics, ceramics with functional andstructural propierties, … In this paper we describe slightly some of the recent developmentsproduced in the group which is not exhaustive (are there a few more) but representative about weare doing at present

    Notes: In this work a new kind of CaSiO3-doped α-Ca3(PO4)2 ceramic materials, withcompositions lying outside the field of the Ca3(PO4)2 solid solution in the system Ca3(PO4)2-CaSiO3, were obtained and some of their properties, relevant for bone repairing, were studied invitro. Crystalline α-Ca3(PO4)2 solid solution and minor amounts of non-equilibrium residual glasswere the only phases in the materials containing 2 and 5 wt% of CaSiO3. α-Ca3(PO4)2, crystallineeutectic-like phase and residual glass were observed for sample containing 15 and 20 wt% ofCaSiO3. The mechanical strength improved for all the doped ceramics with regard to un-dopedCa3(PO4)2. The release of ionic Ca and Si in simulated physiological conditions increased with thecontent of CaSiO3 and favored α-Ca3(PO4)2 surface transformation. The soluble componentsextracted from the CaSiO3-doped α-Ca3(PO4)2 bioceramics were not cytotoxic to human fibroblastlikecells. Initial cell adhesion onto the surface of the materials seemed to be partially hindered bysurface reactivity and remodeling, however those cells adhered to the experimental bioceramicswere viable and proliferated normally
