    Notes: The scattering behaviour and the critical conditions where gelation takes place have been calculated for polycondensates formed under constraints. The general model includes fully random and stringently restricted reactions as limiting cases. Also polycondensates of glycerine-type monomers are included as special cases. The particle scattering factors of the f-functional random polycondensates differ remarkably from those polycondensates formed under strict constraints. The former show a Kratky plot of a simple curve, independent of the magnitude of the molecular weight and the number of functional groups, and the curve approaches a constant asymptote of u2·Pz(u)=3, the latter exhibits a maximum at u2=6 which becomes more pronounced with increasing molecular weight, (u2 = 〈S2〉zh2, with h, the value of the scattering vector). The scattering curves of the polycondensates formed under weak constraints show at low molecular weights the same behaviour as those formed under stringent constraints, but approach the behaviour of random polycondensates at large molecular weights. The scattering curves of the glycerine-type polycondensates show no deviations in shape from random polycondensates.

    Description: Studies such as Lemmon, Roberts and Zender (2008) demonstrate how stable firms' capital structures are over time, and raise the question of whether new theories of capital structure are needed to explain these phenomena. In this paper, I show that trade-off theory-based empirical proxies that are observed with error offer an alternative explanation for the persistence in portfolio-leverage levels. Measurement error noise equal to 80% of the cross-sectional variation in the market to book ratio, coupled with slight mismeasurement of other factors, matches simulated data moments to empirical moments. This suggests that unobserved investment opportunities play an important role in explaining leverage ratios.

    Description: Die Logistik ist ein hochgradig interdisziplinäres, komplexes Wissensgebiet und Kompetenzfeld, das sich kontinuierlich und sehr dynamisch weiterentwickelt. Dies erfordert nicht nur eine fortgesetzte Anpassung von Ausbildungsangeboten, sondern auch die systematische Weiterbildung von Logistikern, um Defizite in der beruflichen Handlungskompetenz zu vermeiden oder abzubauen. Lernen am Arbeitsplatz, eventuell in Verbindung mit E-Learning, erscheint als geeigneter Weg, die Entwicklung von beruflicher Handlungskompetenz auch in der Logistik zu unterstützen. Der Beitrag stellt verschiedene Ansätze für die Kompetenzermittlung und –entwicklung speziell in der Logistik dar und leitet Schlussfolgerungen zu den heutigen Kompetenzanforderungen bei Logistikpraktikern ab. Dies bildet die Basis für einen Handlungsrahmen, der im EU-geförderten Projekt lot4eng.com entstanden ist und hilft, das logistische Kompetenzniveau einer Person zu spezifizieren, geeignete Lerneinheiten zu seiner Steigerung vorzuschlagen und die individuelle Kompetenzentwicklung zu unterstützen. Im Weiteren wird die Gestaltung von E-Learning zum Füllen der lot4eng.com-Plattform diskutiert, bevor Erfahrungen aus der Projektarbeit und Schlussfolgerungen für die weitere Arbeit abgeleitet werden. Damit möchte der Beitrag die laufende Forschung dazu, wie lebenslanges Lernen unterstützt werden kann, anreichern.
    Description: The logistics field of knowledge and professional competence is highly multidisciplinary and complex but also continuously and very dynamically developing. This does not only require constant updating of educational programmes but also systematic training of logistics professionals in order to avoid or reduce professional competence gaps. Workplace learning amongst others in combination with e-learning methodology seems to be an appropriate way to support professional competence development in logistics, too. The paper presents some research aspects particularly related to logistics competence profiling and development and derives conclusions on nowadays competence requirements with logistics professionals. This forms the basis for introducing a framework to help in specifying a person’s level of logistics competence, recommending suitable learning units and supporting individual competence development as it results from the EU-funded lot4eng.com project. E-learning design to populate the lot4eng.com portal is discussed before lessons learned and conclusions on further work are derived. With this the paper wants to contribute to ongoing research on how to foster lifelong learning.

    Description: The paper described a novel technique for semen collection in large psittacines (patent pending), a procedure which was not routinely possible before. For the first time, a large set of semen samples is now available for analysis as well as for artificial insemination. Semen samples of more than 100 psittacine taxa were collected and analysed; data demonstrate large differences in the spermatological parameters between families, indicating an ecological relationship with breeding behaviour (polygamous versus monogamous birds). Using semen samples for artificial insemination resulted in the production of offspring in various families, such as Macaws and Cockatoos, for the first time ever. The present technique represents a breakthrough in species conservation programs and will enable future research into the ecology and environmental factors influencing endangered species.     Description: Background: In traditional Chinese medicine, green tea is considered to have a life-prolonging effect, possibly as a result of its rich content of antioxidant tea polyphenols, and hence has the potential to prevent cancer. This study investigated the role of the major tea secondary plant compound epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) for its inhibitory effects on the metastasis-associated 67 kDa laminin receptor (67LR). Methods: To clarify the impact of EGCG on siRNA-silenced expression of 67LR, we applied an adenoviral-based intestinal in vitro knockdown model, porcine IPEC-J2 cells. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction was performed to analyze 67LR gene expression following treatment with physiological and pharmacological concentrations of EGCG (1.0 g/l, 0.1 g/l, 0.02 g/l and 0.002 g/l). Results: We report co-regulation of EGCG and 67LR, which is known to be an EGCG receptor. siRNA selectively and highly significantly suppressed expression of 67LR under the impact of EGCG in a synergetic manner. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that 67LR expression is regulated by EGCG via a negative feedback loop. The explicit occurrence of this effect in synergy with a small RNA pathway and a plant-derived drug reveals a new mode of action. Our findings may help to provide insights into the many unsolved health-promoting activities of other natural pharmaceuticals.

    Description: Deregulated expression of MYC is a driver of colorectal carcinogenesis, necessitating novel strategies to inhibit MYC function. The ubiquitin ligase HUWE1 (HECTH9, ARF-BP1, MULE) associates with both MYC and the MYC-associated protein MIZ1. We show here that HUWE1 is required for growth of colorectal cancer cells in culture and in orthotopic xenograft models. Using high-throughput screening, we identify small molecule inhibitors of HUWE1, which inhibit MYC-dependent transactivation in colorectal cancer cells, but not in stem and normal colon epithelial cells. Inhibition of HUWE1 stabilizes MIZ1. MIZ1 globally accumulates on MYC target genes and contributes to repression of MYC-activated target genes upon HUWE1 inhibition. Our data show that transcriptional activation by MYC in colon cancer cells requires the continuous degradation of MIZ1 and identify a novel principle that allows for inhibition of MYC function in tumor cells. New highly specific inhibitors of HUWE1 have been identified that can inhibit MYC function in a tumour cell-specific manner, by preventing the HUWE1-mediated block of a repressive complex of MYC with MIZ1 on MYC-activated target genes.

    Description: Background: AKI frequently develops in sepsis patients, significantly decreasing the overall prognosis. There are currently no diagnostic markers available which reliably predict the prognosis of sepsis-associated AKI. Recently, ATP content of CD4+ T cells (ATP_CD4) has been shown to correlate with survival in sepsis. The aim of the study was to determine ATP_CD4 in sepsis-associated AKI. Methods: Thirty-three patients with sepsis were prospectively analyzed for ATP_CD4 at three different time points. Results were related to survival, renal recovery, and further clinical/laboratory findings. Results: ATP_CD4 tended to lower in concentration at 48 h after onset of sepsis in those patients with complete renal recovery. There were no differences between patients with no AKI and those with AKI of different severity (AKIN 1-3). Urinary NGAL did not correlate with renal prognosis. Conclusion: ATP_CD4 may serve as risk predictor in sepsis-associated AKI. Lower concentrations may indicate a higher chance of complete renal recovery in sepsis.

    Description: Background: The copy number variation (CNV) in beta-defensin genes (DEFB) on human chromosome 8p23 has been proposed to contribute to the phenotypic differences in inflammatory diseases. However, determination of exact DEFB CN is a major challenge in association studies. Quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR), paralog ratio tests (PRT) and multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA) have been extensively used to determine DEFB CN in different laboratories, but inter-method inconsistencies were observed frequently. In this study we asked which one is superior among the three methods for DEFB CN determination. Results: We developed a clustering approach for MLPA and PRT to statistically correlate data from a single experiment. Then we compared qPCR, a newly designed PRT and MLPA for DEFB CN determination in 285 DNA samples. We found MLPA had the best convergence and clustering results of the raw data and the highest call rate. In addition, the concordance rates between MLPA or PRT and qPCR (32.12 % and 37.99 %, respectively) were unacceptably low with underestimated CN by qPCR. Concordance rate between MLPA and PRT (90.52 %) was high but PRT systematically underestimated CN by one in a subset of samples. In these samples a sequence variant which caused complete PCR dropout of the respective DEFB cluster copies was found in one primer binding site of one of the targeted paralogous pseudogenes. Conclusion: MLPA is superior to PRT and even more to qPCR for DEFB CN determination. Although the applied PRT provides in most cases reliable results, such a test is particularly sensitive to low-frequency sequence variations preferably accumulating in loci like pseudogenes which are most likely not under selective pressure. In the light of the superior performance of multiplex assays, the drawbacks of such single PRTs could be overcome by combining more test markers.
