Notes: Abstract The determination of wear metals and metalloids in used lubricating oils allows the prediction of equipment failure. A number of procedures to determine wear metals in lubricating oils by atomic spectrometry has been published. Industry has lately shown a special interest in the determination of tin, since its appearance at certain levels in used oils indicates severe engine wear. Therefore, a method for the determination of the total tin content in used lubricating oils by hydride generation-atomic absorption spectrometry (HG-AAS) is described. Unused marine lubricating oils spiked with the analyte were digested in closed vessels in a microwave oven and the diluted product was used for continuous stannane generation. There are many factors that influence effective SnH4 generation; therefore, fractionary factorial design was used to obtain an adequate sensitivity and also to stabilize the signal. Six variables were taken into account and a 26–2 IV design was used with spiked samples containing 30 ng g–1 Sn. The reproducibility, stability, calibration curve and limit of detection were established. The method was applied to different kinds of used lubricating oils. In all cases, the results were higher than those obtained in the industry by simple dilution.

Notes: Abstract The performance of two multivariate calibration methods, multiple linear regression (MULTI3) and partial least-square regression (PLS-2), for the resolution of the ternary mixtures of acetylsalicylic acid-caffeine-codeine and acetaminophen-caffeine-codeine is compared. The methodologies were checked by applying them to the analysis of two sets of laboratory-prepared mixtures over the concentration ranges 13.0–19.0, 1.00–3.00 and 0.20–1.00 μg · ml–1 for acetylsalicylic acid-caffeine-codeine and 12.0–22.0, 0.40–2.00 and 0.20–1.00 μg · ml–1 for acetamimophen-caffeine-codeine, respectively. While the results provided by MULTI3 were unacceptable in the majority of the cases, those obtained by PLS-2 were quite good with considerably diminished errors, as a result of calibration and/or checking with MULTI3, taking no account of potential interactions between analytes. It was shown that it is possible by using PLS-2 to resolve complex mixtures of analytes in a highly disparate proportion, even when they have overlapping signals. The proposed method was successfully demonstrated for pharmaceutical tablets.

Notes: Abstract. The aim of this study was to show the US findings in mode B and color Doppler duplex of the dilatation of the rete testis, in order to analyze its association with other scrotal processes and to confirm their inclusion into the benign testicular lesions. We present seven diagnosed cases (mean age 61 years) of dilatation of the rete testis to which a clinical control and US was accomplished up to 1 year. The scrotal sonography study was carried out with a linear probe of 7.5 Mhz. In the US examination we observed in all cases an intratesticular image located in the mediastinum testis constituted by anechoic and serpiginous tubular structures, which do not show any blood flow with the color Doppler. In one case the mentioned observations were bilateral. Five cases had cysts in epididymis and the last case showed an increase in size in the epididymis head. Color Doppler duplex examination did not detected flow dots in the seven patients. The dilatation of the rete testis is a benign entity frequently associated with pathology in epididymis, with specific US findings which permit avoidance of invasive tests.

Notes: Abstract In an attempt to identify the possible role of major genes, multifactorial inheritance, and cohort effects in the susceptibility to idiopathic epilepsy with generalized tonic-clonic seizures of the awakening type (GTCS), complex segregation analysis was performed in 196 nuclear families ascertained through affected probands with idiopathic epilepsy with GTCS belonging to the Paisa community of Antioquia (Colombia). Models postulating no transmission, single major locus (dominant and recessive) only, and multifactorial component only, were rejected. Since the codominant single major locus model could not be rejected and models that assign no major locus to transmission, no polygenic component to transmission, and no transmission of the major effect were rejected, complex segregation analysis suggested that a major autosomal codominant allele together with a multifactorial component (mixed model) best explained clustering of idiopathic epilepsy with GTCS in families of the Paisa community. The deficit of transmission of heterozygotes (0.17) is compatible with the existence of epistasis acting on a major gene whose frequency was estimated to be 0.0211. Its transmission variance accounts for 81% of the susceptibility to idiopathic epilepsy with GTCS. The complementary variance (19%) is due to the polygenic component.

Notes: Summary We compared CSF and serum levels, and the CSF/serum ratio of alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E), measured by HPLC, in 44 apparently well-nourished patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and 37 matched controls. CSF and serum vitamin E levels were correlated, both in AD patients and in controls. The mean CSF and serum vitamin E levels were significantly lower in AD patients, and the CSF/serum ratio of AD patients did not differ significantly between the 2 study groups. CSF vitamin E levels did not correlate with age, age at onset, duration of the disease and score of the Minimental State Examination in the AD group. Weight and body mass index were significantly lower in AD patients than in controls. These results suggest that low CSF and serum vitamin E concentrations in AD patients could be related with a deficiency of dietary intake of vitamin E.

Notes: Summary. We studied respiratory chain enzyme activities in spermatozoa homogenates from 12 untreated Parkinson's disease (PD) male patients and from 23 age matched healthy male controls. When compared with controls, PD patients showed significantly lower specific activities for complexes I+III, II+III, and IV. However, citrate synthase corrected activities were similar in patients and controls. Values for enzyme activities in the PD group did not correlate with age at onset, duration, scores of the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scales and Hoehn and Yahr staging. These results suggest that this tissue cannot be used to develop a diagnostic test for PD.

Notes: Summary. We compared CSF and serum selenium levels, measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry, in 27 patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) (13 females, 14 males, mean ± SD age 73.6 ± 7.4 years) without major clinical signs of undernutrition, and 34 matched controls (18 females, 16 males, mean ± SD age 70.7 ± 7.8 years). CSF and serum selenium levels did not differ significantly between AD-patient (11.4 ± 7.8 ng/ml and 28.5 ± 13.0 ng/ml, respectively) and control groups (13.3 ± 7.0 ng/ml and 22.5 ± 17.5 ng/ml). These values were not correlated with age, age at onset, duration of the disease, and scores of the MiniMental State Examination in the AD group. Weight and body mass index were significantly lower in AD patients than in controls. These results suggest that CSF selenium concentrations are apparently unrelated with the reported oxidative stress processes in patients with AD.

Notes: Abstract Dens invaginatus is a developmental variation resulting from an alteration in the normal growth pattern of the dental papilla of a tooth. This anomaly occurs predominantly in maxillary permanent lateral incisors. Multiple occurrence in maxillary incisor teeth in the same patient has frequently been reported, and examination of bilateral teeth for the anomaly is often carried out routinely. This paper reports an unusual case of multiple invaginations, including dens invaginatus affecting maxillary lateral incisors and a supernumerary tooth and minor imaginations of the upper canines. Moreover, the case illustrates the importance of examining all the teeth in patients who present with dens invaginatus and palatal pits in incisors and canines. The possibility that the supernumerary tooth had resulted from gemination of the lateral incisor tooth germ is discussed.

Notes: To describe a case of rhabdomyomatosis of the lung unassociated with other external or visceral malformations in a newborn infant.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Methods and results:A 26 weeks' gestation newborn male with no relevant medical or family history presented a well-circumscribed solid area in the posterior mediastinum occupying the upper lobe of the right lung. The possibility of neuroblastoma or an extralobar pulmonary sequestration were excluded after laboratory and arteriographic studies. No visceral anomalies were found. At the age of 9 months the patient underwent a partial lobectomy, and he is free of disease 39 months after surgery. Histological examination demonstrated the presence of numerous bundles of striated fibres arranged haphazardly in the pulmonary interstitium in a background of a type-II congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation-like morphology of the resected lung.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉Conclusion:The presence of striated muscle fibres in the lung not necessarily represents a lethal congenital malformation. As this case shows, rhabdomyomatosis of the lung can affect a single pulmonary lobe, and resection of the affected lung parenchyma may be curative. It is important for pathologists to be aware of this entity, although it is exceptional, and to include it in the differential diagnosis of pulmonary masses in the newborn lung.

Notes: Endocardial pacemaker electrode implantation can be difficult in patients with anomalous superior vena cava (SVC). Venography and CAT scan showed that the patient lacked SVC venous drainage and that systemic veins drained into the inferior vena cava through the azygos vein. A temporary stimulation electrode was placed by puncture of the femoral vein, permanent stimulation by venotomy of the epigastric vein, with the electrode inserted through the external iliac vein.
