Notes: Summary Ninety-one cases of primary breast cancers and their nodal metastases were examined with DNA flow cytometry. No differences were found between the stemline distributions in the primary tumors and nodal metastases. At both sites stemlines clustered around a DNA index of 1.0 (33–40% of cases) and 1.8. The mean S-phase fractions were 7.9 in primary tumors versus 5.6% in nodal metastases (p = 0.02); this difference was also observed if the analysis was restricted to cases with DNA aneuploidy at both sites (10.2 versus 7.6%, p = 0.04). Our results indicate that axillary nodal ploidy and proliferation reflect primary tumor characteristics rather than displaying changes associated with selection during the lymphatic metastatic process. Lymph nodes may have a suppressive effect on the proliferation of tumor cells.

Notes: Summary The effects of biological, chemical and integrated control on the formation of selerotia ofRhizoctonia solani on new potato tubers were studied in experimental fields. Sprouts of seed tubers, sprouted in daylight, were inoculated withVerticillium biguttatum, an ecologically obligate mycoparasite ofR. solani. Fungicides were mixed with the top soil. Biological control byV. biguttatum increased the percentage of harvests with less than 5% loss due to grading from 24% (non-inoculated) to 56%. Fungicides at the recommended rates usually gave good results but lower doses were less effective in sand than in loam soils. When fungicides were combined with biological control, the results were often, better: harvests with less than 5% sorting loss increased from 56 to 81%. Integrated control with pencycuron at 25% of the recommended rate was about equal to chemical control with pencycuron at full rate. The advantages of integrated control are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Redox potentials of a series of complexes of cobalt(II) and organocobalt(III) with tetraazamacrocyclic (N4) and N2O2-noncyclic polychelate ligands have been determined by cyclic voltammetry. Introduction of ano-phenylene fragment instead of an ethylene fragment into an equatorial ligand and/or exchange of an N4-coordination chromophore for the N2O2-analog has been shown to result in the anodic shift of redox potentials of MeCo(IV)L/ MeCo(III)L, MeCo(III)L/MeCo(II)L, and Co(II)L/Co(I)L pairs. It has been established that the solvent effect on redox potential is larger for Co(III)L/Co(II)L than for other pairs. Apparently, this is the first case when quasi-reversible stages of oxidation of MeCo(III)L to MeCo(IV)L+ and MeCo(IV)L+ to [MeCo(IV)L]2+ can be simultaneously observed. A. relatively stable complex of methylcobalt(IV) with a long lifetime at ∼20 °C has been registered by the ESR method.

Notes: Summary Potato cultivars were grown in a glasshouse and plants periodically transferred to a growth chamber. When the ambient temperature in the growth chamber was raised from 15 to 40°C in steps of 5°C per hour, net photosynthetic rate decreased at temperatures above 20°C. At 40°C the rate was 37% of the rate at 20°C. A greater decrease in net photosynthetic rate occurred with plants of the cultivar Up-to-Date than with cultivars R100 and BP13. Low values of leaf diffusive resistance were recorded and changes in photosynthetic rate could not be explained by changes in this factor. When a constant ambient air temperature of 20°C was maintained while soil temperature was increased, net photosynthetic rate decreased.

Notes: Abstract Selenium-75 homocholic acid conjugated with taurine (75Se-HCAT) was used during loperamide administration in seven patients suspected of having bile acid malabsorption due to late radiation damage and small-bowel resection in order to document the aetiology of ileal dysfunction and to adjust therapeutic management. In two patients with ileal resection up to 50 cm and in one patient without resection, a reduction of bowel motility by loperamide resulted in marked normalization of the75Se-HCAT retention measurements. Sequential scintigraphic75Se-HCAT imaging demonstrated a significant improvement in the75Se-HCAT reabsorption and recirculation, accompanied in one case by prolongation of colonic retention of the radiopharmaceutical. In four patients with more than 80 cm resection, the75Se-HCAT test was abnormal during loperamide administration. In two of these patients for whom baseline values were available, no improvement in the pattern of75Se-HCAT absorption was observed. In conclusion, the first results of loperamide75Se-HCAT in patients suspected of having bile acid malabsorption and abnormal baseline75Se-HCAT are promising. Intervention with loperamide is easy and seems to improve the clinical value of the test with direct therapeutic implications. Sequential75Se-HCAT imaging is essential for interpreting changes in the75Se-HCAT retention measurements.

Notes: Abstract Non-CO2 greenhouse gases, such as methane and nitrous oxide, can make a relevant contribution to the enhanced greenhouse effect, and hence emission reduction is desirable. In emission reduction inventories, both the magnitude of the emission reduction as well as the specific emission reduction costs should be determined. The current knowledge of the potential for and costs of reducing these emissions is still limited. Taking this into account, the following results can be obtained. Methane emissions can be considerably reduced from underground coal mining, oil production, natural gas operations, landfilling of waste, and wastewater treatment. Also emissions from enteric fermentation and animal manure can be reduced substantially. The total technical potential for methane emission reduction (given the present activity level) is estimated to be about one third. The economic potential, having net negative emission reduction costs, is estimated to be about half of this value. These reductions can be attained over a period of 10 – 20 years. The technical potential for the reduction of nitrous oxide emissions is currently estimated to be less than 10% Apart from the possibility of implementing existing techniques, there seems to be considerable room for developing techniques for more far-reaching emission reductions both for methane and nitrous oxide.

Notes: Abstract Inflammatory orbital disease can be triggered by a variety of causes. Two such diseases are pseudotumor orbitae and Grave's ophthalmopathy, and both involve extraocular muscles during a quiet phase in these two diseases. Biopsies obtained from a previous pseudotumor orbitae showed complement deposits and increased expression of HLA class-I antigens in the intermuscular tissue. The biopsies from two out of our pseudotumor cases and two out of four Grave's ophthalmophathy cases contained increased numbers of intermuscular HLA class-II-expressing cells. In spite of clinical remission, the local condition in all four pseudotumor cases and in two out of four cases of Grave's ophthalmopathy still suggests active inflammatory disease.
