    Notes: Summary A computer-assisted mixture design simplex method is presented for optimization of the separation of a mixture of five benzoic acid derivatives in reversephase HPTLC and twelve PTH-amino acids in normal phase HPTLC. A two-factor selectivity rectangle concept was used. The method is based on a special polynomial estimated from nine experimental runs, using the RF difference as the selection criterion, with connection to a general simplex method for optimization using a microcomputer. Excellent agreement is obtained between predicted data and experimental results, and more than half the number of experiments required in the general simplex method can be omitted.

    Notes: Summary Multi-variable regression analysis between lnkw, c (in retention equation lnk′=lnkw+cCb) and molecular structure parameters, including hydrophobicity, electric effect, field effect and position-specific effect constant, was carried out with O-ethyl, O-aryl and N-isopropyl phosphoroamidothioates as test solutes. With these quantitative relationships, the retention behaviour of these solutes for different mobile phase compositions was predicted. The results showed that there are only 26.7% of total, experimentally measured, capacity factors with relative deviations larger than 5% and only 2.2% with deviations larger than 10%, which means that it is possible to apply the method reported to predict retention values for qualitative purposes for different mobile phase compositions.

    Notes: Summary A computer-assisted method is presented for the simultaneous multifactor optimization (stationary phase loading, column temperature and carrier gas flow rate) of the analytical conditions for the optimum separation of multicomponent samples in gas chromatography. The optimization of the separation over the experimental region is based on a special polynomial from twelve preliminary experiments using the resolution as the selection criterion. Computer scanning technique was used for optimum selection in three dimensions. Excellent agreement was obtained between the predicted data and the experimental results.

    Notes: Abstract The cyclotron autoresonance maser (CARM) is shown to be capable of extremely high power efficient operation with relatively weak magnetic field requirements. A general description of the CARM traveling wave amplifier is presented. The linear theory is applied to study the stability of the device and a self-consistent numerical simulation code is used to predict the performance. It is found that grazing intersection often gives superior performance, especially for high current electron beams. The designs of two CARM amplifiers for the applications of a high gradient rf linac and electron cyclotron resonance plasma heating as well as a proof of principle experiment are presented.
