Notes: Abstract– The distribution of metal ions in the chromaffin granule is anomalous. Calcium ions are accumulated but magnesium ions excluded. We have used the manganese ion as a convenient divalent element for following metal ion uptake because it can usefully be employed as a substitute for magnesium. The kinetics of the manganese incorporation were followed by radio tracer technique and its transport was characterized as being non-energy dependent and having a small thermal activation factor. The presence in the incubation medium of a membrane-bound ATPase inhibitor (NEM) or addition of CN− or NaN3 did not affect the metal incorporation into chromaffin granules. Little endogenous magnesium exchanges for manganese when the latter is incorporated, but magnesium competitively prevented manganese uptake. The binding of manganese inside the vesicle was strong and it was not exchangeable with magnesium even in the presence of ATP.Manganese when incorporated binds to ATP and displaces catecholamines resulting in a decrease in the CA/ATP ratio.

Notes: Summary Previous studies show that the suppression of gonadal function in blind-anosmic rats is dependent on the pineal gland. The present results demonstrate that in young female rats both the pineal gland and dual sensory deprivation have additional independent antigonaldal effects.

Notes: Summary Effects of single doses of 50 and 100 mg/kg of TMA given i.p. were noted in male albino mice after 40 min and 2 1/2 h. Locomotor activity was significantly altered and biochemical tests indicated stimulatory effects on adrenocortical and adrenomedullary functions due to TMA.

Notes: Abstract Eucalyptus is recognised as containing somewhat more than 450 species, but this number could reasonably be either decreased or increased considerably by slight variations of species concept. Recognition of taxa, at least in the wild, is less difficult than supposed but their ranking depends on degree and nature of discontinuities or steepened gradients of correlated variation, in this group of diploid sexual outbreeding trees of the dominant stratum. Some 8–10 rather distinct lines marked by different character constellations are discernible inEucalyptus s. lat. (incl.Angophora), and it is clear that the floral operculum is of diverse nature and multiple origin. The advisability of recognising several distinct genera depends on the wideness of polyphylesis in relation to other Myrtaceous genera, and (unfortunately) on practical convenience.

Notes: Cranberry juice cocktail was chosen as a typical red fruit juice. Samples were heated at 65°C to simulate pigment degradation on storage. The heated samples were ranked for color visually and objectively using a Hunter Color Meter, a Gardner Color Meter and a G.E. recording spec-trophotometer. Most functions of color obtained from the instrument correlated highly with visual color except dominant wavelength, hue, and Hunter and Gardner b. Most instrumental values also correlated well with anthocyanin concentration except the three above. The expanded L, a*, b* scales, which were developed in previous work to eliminate the inversion of tristimulus scales with pigment concentration with dark beverages, also gave very high correlations with visual evaluations and with anthocyanin concentrations.

Notes: An X-ray diffraction study of the AgI–KI–H2O chemical system was conducted by injecting an acetonic solution of a 2:1 mole ratio of AgI:KI directly upon an inert substrate thermally strapped to a thermoelectric cold stage. The atmosphere over the stage was controlled from 0.6 mb water vapor pressure to saturation while the temperature was varied from −22 to 25°C. Under these conditions four distinct crystalline phases are formed. Crystals of phase AK (KAg4I5) appear as the acetone evaporates. Moisture available from the ambient atmosphere functions as a catalyst as the newly formed AK transforms to phase BK (K2AgI3). At higher vapor pressures a second transformation results in phase CK. All phases break down and form an aqueous solution of KI plus equant AgI crystals (complex DK) at saturation vapor pressures. Another hydrous phase EK occurs below 0°C. The most probable composition of phases CK and EK is KAg2I3.H2O and KAg3I4.8H2O respectively. Nucleation studies show that the KI system is a poorer artificial nucleant of ice than the NH4I–AgI system above −10°C. Kinetics of the system suggest an absence of any free AgI for aerosols released from airborne platforms or from ground seeding stations.
