Notes: In industrialised countries water service providers (WSPs) must provide an appropriate level of service with an acceptable performance at an acceptable cost to customers. In the UK a move towards sustainable development is now also a major goal for WSPs. However, the imposition of institutional systems and regulatory targets still encourage the adoption of less sustainable technologies or solutions by the water industry. It is within this context, that the Sustainable Water industry Asset Resource Decisions (SWARD) project has developed a set of decision support processes that allow WSPs to assess the relative sustainability of water/wastewater system asset development decisions. A Guidebook has been produced that takes the WSP and its stakeholders through the processes essential to incorporating sustainability in asset investment decision-making. Several case studies that demonstrate the SWARD principles in application are included within the Guidebook, the experience of which is described in this paper.

Notes: Considers that when efficiency and effectiveness of systems are measured by the quantity and quality of their output they may be inadequate for the purpose of comparing one system with another. Seeks new criteria and defines entropy, wastivity and quality concepts in relation to system performance. Establishes the interdependence of the three concepts. Proposes that system wastivity should be used as a measure of system performance.

Notes: Governments are employing modern information and communication technologies to serve society better. Raising the effectiveness and quality of government services is not only a matter of new technologies; it also involves clear vision and objectives as well as a sound business strategy. Information systems need to support internal work within a government's boundaries, serve customers through digital interfaces and leverage digital relationships among social partners. To implement such systems, preparatory work is required in both organization and technology. A new public information management philosophy underlies this significant revamping of the value propositions made to customers. The ongoing enrichment of the Greek Ministry's of Finance e-services follows an ICDT-like business logic. A key factor of all these advances is the re-orientation of information systems for customer-centric service.

Notes: Purpose - The goal is to examine the relationship between business process improvement initiatives (BPII), information systems (ISs) integration, and customer focus. Design/methodology/approach - The data for the study were collected at the divisional levels from a list of "Fortune 500" firms. A total of 1,100 questionnaires were mailed to divisional managers and 115 responses were used for the data analysis. Findings - The results of this study support the hypotheses that BPII directly affects customer responsiveness and product/service innovation. In addition, data integration and communication networks flexibility are found to significantly affect customer responsiveness and product/service innovation. Communication networks connectivity did not have any significant effect on customer responsiveness and product/service innovation, respectively. Data integration, intrafirm networks connectivity and networks flexibility are found to significantly mediate the relationship between BPII and customer responsiveness and BPII and product/service development, respectively. Interfirm networks connectivity was not found to significantly mediate the relationship between BPII and customer responsiveness and BPII and product/service development, respectively. Research limitations/implications - The sample consists of divisions of Fortune 500 firms. Second, the study is cross-sectional; therefore, it lacks the predictive power to find the long-term effects of BPII and IS integration on customer focus. A longitudinal study can be a future research endeavor to validate the results of the study. Originality/value - To business managers, the study clarifies the role of IS integration in customer focus.

Notes: This paper describes a software tool that aids researchers in the study of agenda setting. Agenda setting theory claims that the mass media influences what the public thinks and talks about. The tool is used to cluster documents into topically coherent groupings that are to represent issues dominating press coverage. The documents are taken from the archives of online newspapers. In addition, the tool enables results to be visualised and displayed. Three methods were investigated for the purpose of clustering, of which the Group-Average-Linkage algorithm was chosen for the final testing. The choice of the clustering algorithm was predominantly made upon the quality of clusters produced. Comparisons between the computer-based results and a method involving human readers revealed comparable findings and potential usefulness of the software.

Notes: This paper presents an experimental study undertaken to determine the polymerisation-induced residual stresses generated in stereolithography (SL) built test specimens, by using the hole-drilling strain gage method of stress relaxation. Experimentally measured strains, using special three-element strain gage rosettes, were input into the blind-hole analysis to calculate the induced residual stresses. The mechanical properties of resin specimens fabricated by the solidification process using an epoxy based photopolymer and post-cured under ultraviolet (UV) and thermal exposure were determined and incorporated into the subsequent drill-hole analysis. The effect of the pre-selected fabrication parameters (hatching space and curing depth) and subsequent by the post-curing procedure (UV, thermal curing) on the magnitude of the recorded strains is also presented.

Notes: Combustion modifications to minimize NOX emissions have magnified the importance of waterwall corrosion in coal-fired boilers. The physics and chemistry controlling corrosion processes can be highly non-linear and are challenging to describe in terms of their likely overall combustion behavior. This paper describes the application of a multi-point, real time corrosion surveillance system to a large boiler firing high sulfur coal. This technology, incorporating electrochemical sensing and wireless signal transmission, enables combustion engineers and plant operating personnel to make informed decisions regarding the quantitative relationships between operating conditions, NOX emissions, and any resultant extent/magnitude of waterwall corrosion.

Notes: States that few studies have attempted to measure the joint effect of brand and country images, or the dimensions of these images, on consumer evaluation of global products. Suggests a methodology for defining product value by consumers' perception of brand and country image dimensions when sourced internationally. Brand-country image profiles were factor analysed to provide dimensions of each brand-country combination. Shows that consumer perception of product value changes, evidenced by brand-country dimensions, as production is sourced internationally, and suggests a modified marketing strategy.

Notes: Although services, in general, have increased in significance worldwide, financial services face a less encouraging future. Market saturation has led to a search for growth opportunities. One approach has been to utilize traditional marketing techniques such as advertising. Another approach has been to expand into international markets. Managing the international advertising efforts of financial service firms is incredibly complex. This nine country study looks at consistency between advertising content and points of emphasis from financial strategy research. The comparison yields similarities and differences between critical managerial dimensions and themes in international financial service advertisements. Discussion of these findings and implications are provided.

Notes: Notes earlier work which commented on the formation of a research group to develop condition-based maintenance (CBM) decision models and associated software. This paper provides an update on the research direction that has been taken since 1995. In particular, the structure of software for CBM decision making is highlighted, along with possible future research directions.
