    Notes: Abstract:  The aim of this study was to determine the effects of melatonin on proinflammatory status of rats with collagen-induced arthritis (CIA). CIA was induced in male Wistar rats with an emulsion of type II collagen in Freund's Incomplete Adjuvant (C-II/FIA). For 14 days, control and pinealectomized rats received a subcutaneous injection of 100 μL melatonin (30 μg) or vehicle (saline on 1% ethanol). Levels of cytokines interleukin (IL)-1β and IL-6 were determined in the serum, peripheral blood mononuclear cells, and joints. Levels of anti-type II collagen antibody, nitrite/nitrate, and lipid peroxidation (LPO) were determined in the serum, joints, and brain. Treatment with melatonin significantly increased the levels of IL-1β, IL-6, nitrite/nitrate and LPO in joints. However, melatonin significantly reduced the levels of nitrite/nitrate and LPO in serum and brain. Moreover, CIA in pinealectomized rats presented significantly reduced levels of IL-1β and IL-6, titers of anti-type II collagen antibodies, levels of nitrite/nitrate, and LPO in joints but elevated levels in serum and brain. Melatonin has been described as a proinflammatory and antioxidant agent. In a process of inflammation as CIA, melatonin acts with a markedly proinflammatory effect at local and peripheral levels maintaining its antioxidant effect only at peripheral level.

    Notes: Abstract:  To gain insight into the relationship between thymus and pineal gland during rat development, the melatonin content as well as the activity and expression of the two key enzymes for melatonin biosynthesis, i.e. N-acetyltransferase (NAT) and hydroxyindole-O-methyltransferase (HIOMT), were studied in the thymus at fetal and postnatal stages. Moreover, melatonin-membrane receptor (MT1) expression was also analyzed. We found both the expression and activity of thymic NAT and HIOMT at 18 days of fetal life. Additionally, there is production of melatonin in the thymus as well as MT1 expression at this fetal age. These results show values higher in day-time than at night-time. The pineal gland begins to produce significant levels of melatonin around postnatal day 16, and this synthesis shows a circadian rhythm with high values during the dark period; therefore the nocturnal serum melatonin may inhibit thymic melatonin production. To document this, we report an increased melatonin content of the thymus in pinealectomized rats compared with sham-pinealectomized. In conclusion, these results show, for the first time, the presence of the biosynthetic machinery of melatonin and melatonin production in developing rat thymus and that the pineal gland may regulate this process.

    Notes: Purpose - This study aims to analyse the relationship between innovation and human resource management (HRM) from an empirical perspective, attempting to establish whether innovation determines the firm's HRM or conversely HRM influences the innovation level of the company Design/methodology/approach - Literature is reviewed from both theoretical and empirical perspectives. On the basis of this review, some research hypotheses are formulated. Finally, these hypotheses are empirically tested on a sample of Spanish firms. Findings - The results provide evidence for both hypotheses and offer more support for Schuler and Jackson's model than for Miles and Snow's model. In accordance with the previous literature, that in order to affect employee behaviour - and consequently promote company objectives - firms must develop a bundle of internally consistent HRM practices. However, what is still unresolved is which HRM practices should be included in that system. Originality/value - Fills a gap in the literature, particularly in empirical research, with a focus on Spanish firms.

    Notes: Insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) has protective effects against β-amyloid (Aβ)-induced neuronal cell death. Because alterations of the somatostatinergic system have been described in Alzheimer's disease, we investigated the effects of the Aβ peptide and the possible protective role of IGF-I on the somatostatinergic system of the rat temporal cortex and on cell death and phosphorylated (p)-Akt levels in this area. Aβ25–35 was administered intracerebroventricularly to male rats via an osmotic minipump over 14 days (300 pmol/day). Another group received a subcutaneous IGF-I infusion (50 μg/kg/day), concomitant with Aβ25–35 administration, whereas a third group received IGF-I alone. Aβ25–35 significantly decreased the somatostatin (SRIF)-like immunoreactive content and the SRIF receptor density, as a result of a decrease in the levels of the SRIF receptor subtype 2. The inhibitory effect of SRIF on adenylyl cyclase activity was significantly lower after Aβ25–35 infusion, whereas the levels of the inhibitory G protein subunit Giα1, Giα2 or Giα3 were unaltered. Cell death was increased and p-Akt levels decreased in Aβ25–35-treated animals. IGF-I administration increased immunoreactive IGF-I levels in the temporal cortex and restored all parameters affected by Aβ25–35 to baseline values. These findings suggest that IGF-I prevents the deleterious effect of Aβ25–35 on the somatostatinergic system.

    Notes: A puffed product was made by extruding corn flour supplemented with soybean and safflower pastes. Mixes with the following proportions of corn flour, soybean and safflower pastes: (i) 89:8:3, (ii) 83:11:6 and (iii) 80:17:3 were extruded. The corn flour, soybean and safflower pastes used had 6.6%, 45.9% and 32.9% protein content respectively. In addition, the soybean paste contained 11.78 units of inhibited trypsin/mg of sample, which means it was appropriate for human consumption. Sensory evaluation of extruded products showed that there were no significant differences in flavour, crunchiness and acceptance in the case of products 1 and 3, when compared with samples made from corn flour alone. Product 2 had lower scores, as it had a bitter taste because of the greater amount of safflower paste used. Biological testing showed that all the products containing soybean and safflower pastes were superior to the 100% corn diet in terms of food conversion, growth rate and weight gain.

    Notes: The effects of low temperature blanching in calcium chloride solution of jalapeño peppers prior to freezing, on firmness retention, pH, methanol, colour and calcium ions of the product, were evaluated by response surface methodology. Texture, methanol content and pH were affected by all of the variables studied (P = 0.05). The optimum response was obtained at temperatures of 63.3–66 °C, calcium chloride concentrations of 0.17–0.21 m, immersion time of 11.6–14.4 min, with a holding time after blanching of 56.6–66.1 min. Microscopic evaluation of the thawed pepper showed that blanching in CaCl2 solution provided a protective effect in maintaining cell wall integrity.

    Notes: Various model systems were designed in order to analyse the way in which addition of different levels of walnut (0, 10, 20%) and processing by high pressure (HPP) (400 MPa for 10 min at 10 °C) influenced the physico-chemical properties of cooked (70 °C for 30 min) meat batters. The addition of walnut increased the fat level and decreased the moisture content in the meat batters. All of the meat batters exhibited good water and fat binding properties. The hardness, cohesiveness, springiness and chewiness of cooked products were reduced by addition of walnut but were unaffected by HPP. Incorporation of nuts in meat products can potentially be used to confer cardiac health benefits.

    Notes: Haploid and amphihaploid Verticillium dahliae isolates were studied using PCR-based molecular markers which: (i) discriminate the defoliating and nondefoliating pathotypes (two primer pairs INTD2f/r and INTND2f/r), and (ii) are species-specific (primer pair 19/22). The results were compared with some known biological and other molecular properties of the isolates. Five discrete sequences of the 19/22 amplicon were found. Sequence 4 was associated with both defoliating isolates from Spain and nondefoliating isolates from Spain and USA; these pathotypes were separated by the primer pairs INTD2f/r and INTND2f/r, but the data showed that the primer espdef01 (derived from the 19/22 amplicon) cannot be used for this purpose. Amplicon sizes and sequences with primers 19/22 divided amphihaploid isolates from crucifers (thought to be interspecific hybrids) into those corresponding to the previously reported α and β groups. The β-group isolates had either sequence 4 or 5 (these two differing by a single base). The distinct amplicon sequence 3 given by the α-group isolates demonstrated that the V. dahliae-like ‘parent’ of this group was molecularly unlike any haploid isolate yet studied. The overall results are discussed in relation to phytosanitary considerations and the probability of defoliating or crucifer pathotypes arising de novo within Europe, either by selection or by interspecific hybridizations.

    Notes: Background:  The term ‘glomeruloid haemangioma’ was coined by Chan et al. for a histologically distinctive cutaneous haemangioma, which they considered a specific cutaneous marker for POEMS syndrome. Glomeruloid haemangiomas appear to be specific to POEMS syndrome, because they have not been reported in patients without this syndrome.Methods:  We report on an 86-year-old man without POEMS syndrome and with a solitary red papule on the face.Results:  A cutaneous biopsy showed histological findings consistent with a glomeruloid haemangioma. Physical examination of the skin did not show any other cutaneous lesion and laboratory and radiological studies ruled out the presence of POEMS syndrome.Conclusions:  Glomeruloid haemangiomas could exceptionally be present as solitary vascular tumours and out of the context of POEMS syndrome. To our knowledge, this is the first case reported of glomeruloid haemangioma without POEMS syndrome. Moreover, the presentation on the face is also highly unusual.

    Notes: Abstract:  Mitochondrial dysfunction might play a role in the pathogenesis of liver damage in erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP). Changes in mitochondrial respiratory chain activities were evaluated in the Fechm1pas/Fechm1pas mouse model for EPP.Mice from different strains congenic for the same ferrochelatase germline mutation manifest variable degrees of hepatobiliary injury. Protoporphyric animals bred into the C57BL/6J background showed a higher degree of hepatomegaly and liver damage as well as higher protoporphyrin (PP) accumulation than those bred into the SJL/J and BALB/cJ backgrounds. Whereas mitochondrial respiratory chain activities remained unchanged in the liver of protoporphyric mice C57BL/6J, they were increased in protoporphyric mice from both SJL/J and BALB/cJ backgrounds, when compared to wild-type animals. Mitochondrial respiratory chain activities were increased in Hep G2 cell line after accumulation of PP following addition of aminolevulinic acid. As a direct effect of these elevated mitochondrial activities, in both hepatic cells from mutant mouse strains and Hep G2 cells, adenosine 5′-triphosphate (ATP) levels significantly increased as the intracellular PP concentration was reduced.These results indicate that PP modifies intracellular ATP requirements as well as hepatic mitochondrial respiratory chain enzymatic activities and further suggest that an increase of these activities may provide a certain degree of protection against liver damage in protoporphyric mice.
