Notes: Abstract Turbulence is known to enhance growth in microalgae. We studied the possible effects of the extra inorganic carbon supplied to the cultures when air bubbling is the source of turbulence. A set of experiments was carried out to separate the effects of the subsidiary action of agitation on growth from those due to possible carbon enrichment from air CO2 when air bubbling was the source of mixing. It was found that air bubbling does not induce an increase of the concentration of inorganic carbon in HCO 3 − -enriched growth media, and that no differences appear between air-bubbled and CO2-free air-bubbled cultures. On the other hand, photosynthetic O2 was accumulated in the medium in non-mixed cultures, which showed higher respiration and lower photosynthetic rates, probably due to photoinhibition induced by oversaturation of O2. Growth rate, maximal cell density and photosynthetic efficiency were higher in aerated cultures than in non-aerated ones.

Notes: Abstract This paper analyzes the productivity growth of the Spanish regions between 1965 and 1995, decomposing productivity gains into technological progress and efficiency change by means of Malmquist indices. Once estimates of efficiency are obtained, the aim of this paper is to analyze the effects of human and public capital on growth in terms of their impact on Total Factor Productivity (TFP). Public capital is believed to increase the productivity of the private factors of production whereas human capital is thought to contribute to the production process as an additional input and to have a dynamic influence on growth through its impact on technological innovation (shifts in the production frontier) and technological diffusion (movements toward the frontier), which are the components of this TFP measure. Considering inefficiencies will then allow the effects of these variables on TFP growth to be estimated via technological progress and efficiency gains.

Notes: Abstract Mean return periods, 〈RP〉, for the site of Roermond, The Netherlands, as calculated by different methods, are compared, and its quality evaluated by a simple two-tail test of hypothesis. Results show that 〈RP〉 values by the EGO-method are statistically more likely. They can be considered, despite their broad 90% probability intervals, and for the site and data used, more reliable, since the Roermond earthquake was not an unusual or surprising event for the Lower Rhine Embayment area, where earthquakes of comparable size have occurred since the 18th century.
