Description: To study the effect of congestion on the fundamental trade-off between diagnostic accuracy and speed, we empirically test the predictions of a formal sequential testing model in a setting where the gathering of additional information can improve diagnostic accuracy, but may also take time and increase congestion as a result. The efficient management of such systems requires a careful balance of congestion-sensitive stopping rules. These include diagnoses made based on very little or no diagnostic information, and the stopping of diagnostic processes while waiting for information. We test these rules under controlled laboratory conditions, and link the observed biases to system dynamics and performance. Our data shows that decision makers (DMs) stop diagnostic processes too quickly at low congestion levels where information acquisition is relatively cheap. But they fail to stop quickly enough when increasing congestion requires the DM to diagnose without testing, or diagnose while waiting for test results. Essentially, DMs are insufficiently sensitive to congestion. As a result of these behavioral patterns, DMs manage the system with both lower-than-optimal diagnostic accuracy and higher-than-optimal congestion cost, underperforming on both sides of the accuracy/speed trade-off.

Description: This study compares the travel journeys of digital natives and digital immigrants, based on a survey with 1,158 participants. Amongst others, the results show that the digital touchpoints are more relevant than the analogue touchpoints for both, digital natives and digital immigrants. For both target groups, search engines, travel platforms, comparison and review portals, family and friends, and travel literature are the main touchpoints during the travel journey. In future, travel companies should put more emphasis on digital marketing because the younger digital natives use digital touchpoints more than older digital immigrants.

Description: Managing changing requirements and complexity is important in enhancing the success of real estate projects. Agile project management provides approaches for adapting processes and working methods accordingly. This study aims to identify the potentials and challenges of agile project management in real estate development. Therefore, a literature analysis placed principles and methods of agile project management in the context of real estate project management. These perceptions were verified with qualitative content analysis based on semi-structured interviews. The main potentials arise through the integration of the occupier as key customer and the consideration of his or her needs through an iterative approach. In connection, incremental planning has the potential to reduce uncertain requirements and facilitate creative solutions. Self-organised teams offer the possibility to improve cooperation between interdisciplinary teams and the sense of responsibility, even if the lack of hierarchy is considered a challenge by the experts. Due to strong conflicts of interest, regulations and expensive, complex product adjustments, challenges and limitations of the approaches are seen. These results provide insights on where agile project management can help real estate project management with the current complexities, but also how it needs to be adapted for widespread application in real estate development.

Description: We show that firm internationalization is affected by the interaction between the board of directors' female share and gender-related institutions in foreign countries. The combination of a high share of female directors and gender-discriminating institutions in a destination reduces sales in that foreign country relative to less discriminatory destinations. We deal with potential endogeneity due to omitted variable bias by including firm-year and origin-destination-year fixed effects, while an event study exploiting the appointments of new female board members addresses endogeneity due to reverse causality. This firm-level relationship transfers to the country-level when using countries' aggregate share of female directors and bilateral exports in a structural gravity framework including origin-year, destination-year and origin-destination fixed effects. Our findings suggest that institutionalized discrimination against female managers is a barrier to firm internationalization on the micro level and international trade on the macro level. This might give rise to disadvantages for female managers even in non-discriminatory countries.

Description: We analyse whether the creation of the eurozone and the euro crisis had an effect on the sportive performance of professional football teams in European nations. We find a significantly positive sign of membership in the eurozone on UEFA points. However, this positive finding is not robust over time and disappears in models with more covariates. It is probably a size effect but at least the adoption of the euro brought no disadvantages in football.

Description: The article deals with the influence of the European Commission in the field of economic policy in the European Union (EU) since the beginning of the 21st century. Starting from reflections on the guiding idea of supranationality the question arises if and how the Commission has increased its influence on the economic policies of the EU Member States. The role of the EU's long-term strategies like the European Green Deal are analysed by applying the approach of Evolutionary Institutionalism. Has the European Commission induced institutional change and improved its own institutional fitness? Which role does the European Green Deal play in European economic policy?

Description: In German-speaking countries, there were differences in dealing with young academics on the threshold of a professorship. In Germany, an external job offer was usually necessary, in Austria one could remain at one's own university through pragmatisation (conversion of a temporary position into a permanent position) or an internal job offer, and in Switzerland tenure tracks based on the Anglo-Saxon model were first set up. Universities now have more autonomy on this issue and should make a conscious decision in favour of one variant.

Description: Exploring Markets" is a paper series discussing niche markets with interesting characteristics. The paper on hand focuses on the market for Non-Fungible Token (NFT) which are transferrable rights of ownership to unique digital assets. NFTs are based on blockchain technology and are traded with cryptocurrencies primarily on specialized marketplaces. In 2021 record breaking auctions of expensive NFTs got mainstream attention, whereas a decreasing trade volume at the start of 2022 might indicate challenges in market adoption for this new technology. The paper discusses specific characteristics of NFTs, use cases and associated problems.

Description: Small and medium-sized enterprises face several challenges mainly related with lack of access to Finance frequently due to a lack of formal Accounting system and financial management, which leads to weaknesses in their internal financial capabilities. Moreover, from the supply side traditional financial institutions have failed to fulfil the needs of SMEs and presently FinTechs have developed innovative ways to increase the financial literacy in SMEs and to facilitate financing for SMEs (Imanbaeva et al., 2017). This study aims to assess and analyze one of these innovative financial instruments in an explorative way: some relevant Accounting and Finance applications present in the market, based on criteria decided by exploring the scientific literature and evaluating it by interviewing Accounting professionals working in start-ups in Germany. The results show that Zoho Books and Xero turned out to be better than the others in the services provided by them and they received the best ratings and feedback. Their best features are their user friendliness, the integrations offered by them, the diversity of the financial reports that they offer and amount of automation they offer to perform the everyday tasks. The most important factor when choosing an Accounting system is assessing the needs and requirements of the business and then to select the software that best suits the needs. Therefore, this research can be also helpful for small and medium business owners who do not have much idea about the financial aspects and need help with choosing the right accounting software for their business, based on the experience and perspectives of the interviewing Accounting professionals. It can act as a guide for them to understand which factors they should take into account while making their decision and the feedback from the participants can help them while choosing among the five software analysed during this research.

Description: This discussion paper addresses the demand for camping tourism by means of a literature review and an exploratory empirical study based on it. There was little data available specifically on motives of campers. Previous studies, such as those conducted by the Society for Consumer Research (Gesellschaft für Konsumforschung), the ADAC or the Erwin Hymer Group, have shown that the main motives for camping vacations are independence, flexibility and proximity to nature. This discussion paper supports these findings with regard to tourist campers and supplements them with the motive of family-friendliness. For wild campers, on the other hand, freedom in addition to tranquility and closeness to nature play a role in terms of motives. Tourist campers mainly inform themselves about camping vacations on the internet and social media as well as by talking to friends and family members. In terms of route planning, most prefer a campground as a specific destination. When campers book their campsite in advance, they do so online or by emailing the campsite directly. Wild campers plan their wild camping stay primarily online. Travel agents do not play a role in camping vacations. Most tourist campers use a caravan or motorhome as their accommodation for their camping vacation. Few stay in a tent. Wild campers mainly use the motorhome. The most popular destination in terms of the last longer camping vacation for almost half of the respondents was Germany, ahead of Italy.

Description: Purpose: Our research aims to determine the impact of work-life balance on the components of organisational commitment in comparison to other key determinants and the influence of work-life balance measures on work-life balance. Methodology: We conducted two studies with 760 and 389 participants each. Our model, consisting of work-life balance measures, work-life balance, other working conditions, and organisational commitment is tested by structural equation modelling. Findings: Work-life balance positively influences the affective and normative component of organisational commitment. This influence, however, is weaker than the impact of other working conditions, like perceived leadership behaviour and the working climate. The only measure that has a significant impact on work-life balance is flexible working time. Practical implications: Our results imply that it is beneficial for organisations to improve their employees' work-life balance. Employers should, however, focus primarily on other working conditions when aiming to improve the organisational commitment of their employees. When launching work-life balance initiatives, organisations should focus on flexible working time arrangements. Originality: So far, it has not been sufficiently examined how a strong work-life balance impacts organisational commitment in comparison to other key determinants. Furthermore, most studies investigate the correlation between work-life balance measures and organisational commitment. We, on the other hand, propose a model in which work life-balance plays a mediating role between organisational measures and commitment and is analysed in comparison to other "regular" working conditions.

Description: Purpose - This paper aims to address research gaps with regard to the relationship between market orientation and marketing performance when small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are located within a service cluster. The three main objectives of this research are to determine the effect that the cluster can have on both the market orientation of clustered companies and their marketing performance and to furthermore evaluate the effect of the market orientation of companies in the cluster on their marketing performance. Design/methodology/approach - This research used executive-level data that were obtained by carrying out a survey involving a unique dataset of 133 Colombian health-related businesses located in the city of Cali (Colombia) in 2014. A system of equations was modeled using SMART PLS. This analysis was complemented by a qualitative study that involved conducting in-depth interviews in six companies. Findings - The results showed that, among the SMEs, membership in an urban services cluster did not significantly influence marketing performance or the implementation of marketing orientation practices. No differences were observed in internal managerial practices implemented between companies that were co-located and isolated. However, a higher level of competitor orientation was associated with greater marketing performance. Given the verified absence of moderating and mediating effects, our work provides a reasonable basis for proposing future research and practical recommendations. Originality/value - While research has demonstrated the relationship between a company's market orientation and marketing performance, this type of analysis has not been carried out on service SMEs in geographic concentrations or clusters.

Description: Purpose - Despite the sophisticated regulatory regime established in Solvency II, analysts should be able to consider other less complex indicators of the soundness of insurers. The Z-score measure, which has traditionally been used as a proxy of individual risk in the banking sector, may be a useful tool when applied in the insurance sector. However, different methods for calculating this indicator have been proposed in the literature. This paper compares six different Z-score approaches to examine which one best fits insurance companies. The authors use a final dataset of 183 firms (1,382 observations) operating in the Spanish insurance sector during the period 2010-2017. Design/methodology/approach - In the first stage, the authors opt for a root mean squared error (RMSE) criterion to evaluate which of the various mean and SD estimates that are used to compute the Z-score best fits the data. In the second stage, the authors estimate and compare the explanatory power of the six Z-score measures that are considered by using an ordinary least squares (OLS) regression model. Finally, the authors report the results of the baseline equation using the system-GMM estimator developed by Arellano and Bover (1995) and Blundell and Bond (1998) for dynamic panel data models. Findings - The authors find that the best formula for calculating the Z-score of insurance firms is the one that combines the current value of the return on assets (ROA) and capitalization with the SD of the returns calculated over the full sample period. Research limitations/implications - The main limitation of the research is that it addresses only the Spanish insurance sector, and consequently, the implications of the findings must be framed in this institutional context. However, the authors think that the results could be extrapolated to other countries. Future research should consider including different countries and analyzing the usefulness of aggregated insurer-level Z-scores for macroprudential monitoring. Practical implications - The Z-score may be a useful early warning indicator for microprudential supervision. In addition to being an indicator of the soundness of insurers simpler than those established in the current regulation, the information provided by this accounting-based measure may help analysts and investors obtain a better understanding of insurance firms' risk factors. Originality/value - To the best of the authors' knowledge, this study is the first to examine and compare different approaches to calculating Z-scores in the insurance sector. The few available results on the predictive power of the Z-score are mixed and focus on the banking sector.

Description: Purpose - This study aims to reveal the impact of consumers' price sensitivity on their purchase intention within the scope of supermarkets. Besides, the study aims to examine the impact of consumers' price sensitivity on their price perception level and emotions and the impact of consumers' price level perception and emotions toward supermarkets on their purchase intention. It also aims to detect the mediating effects of consumers' price level perception and emotions toward supermarkets between their price sensitivity and purchase intention. Design/methodology/approach - The quota sampling method was used to form the study sample. The population was 20-69-year-old consumers. The study sample included 513 consumers, 276 of whom were men, and 237 of whom were women. Data were collected via a questionnaire by the researchers in Mersin's (Turkey) five central counties. Explanatory and confirmatory factor analyses and structural equation models were used to analyze data. Findings - Consumers' price sensitivity, perception of cheapness, perception of expensiveness and positive emotions toward supermarkets affect their purchase intention. Besides, price sensitivity affects their perception of cheapness while it does not affect their perception of expensiveness. It influences negative emotions, but not on positive emotions. Consumers' perception of cheapness and perception of expensiveness have impacts on positive emotions toward supermarkets. It was additionally discovered that perception of cheapness and perception of expensiveness affected negative emotions toward supermarkets. A contributed finding was that perception of cheapness had a partial mediating role between price sensitivity and purchase intention. Practical implications - The study provides managerial implications in terms of understanding consumers' behavioral changes, developing effective pricing strategies and achieving competitive advantages over the other retailing companies. Originality/value - The study illustrates that consumer behavior can be explained by a theoretical construct considering the price perception levels and emotions toward supermarkets in examining the effect of consumers' price sensitivity on their purchase intention. Therefore, it contributes to explain consumers' behavior by bringing the stimulus-organism-response (SOR) model into a theoretical construct.

Description: Purpose - The unprecedented economic crisis in Greece deeply affected entrepreneurship, which was traditionally characterised by low levels of innovation and competitiveness, the dominant presence of micro-sized enterprises and the weak signs of prosperity in large firms. This paper, in acknowledgement of the necessary transformations that production incurred due to the crisis, attempts to detect the characteristics of large manufacturing firms that contributed to their greater resilience during the unstable period of 2011-2016 by analysing the determinants of the higher profitability of firms. The analysis shows that firms that improved their productivity and sales levels and in parallel are flexible, in the sense that they have limited amounts of both assets and liabilities and thus a small risk, are those that presented higher profits during the period under study. Initial conditions, sectoral characteristics and the broader national environment do not seem to have a strong contributive role in firms' profitability. Design/methodology/approach - The analysis follows a dynamic system generalised method of moments (GMM) estimation based on a panel data set of 125 Greek large firms over the time span 2011-2016. Findings - The analysis shows that firms that improve their productivity and sales levels and in parallel are flexible, in the sense that they have a limited amount of both assets and liabilities and thus a small risk, are those that present higher profits during the period under study. Initial conditions, sectoral characteristics and the broader national environment do not seem to have a strong contributive role in firms' profitability. Research limitations/implications - The present paper attempts to explain the performance of the most dynamic large manufacturing firms in Greece by investigating the role of some of the most important determinants of firm profitability (according to data availability), acknowledging, however, some analysis' limitations as the absence of some other parameters like the export activity or the incorporation of any innovative features in the firms Originality/value - The novelty of this paper lies in two points. First, the subject of the analysis is the large firms in Greece, which have not received much attention as Greek entrepreneurship was traditionally based on the light, labour- or resource-intensive production and the main bulk of the literature was not on that topic. Second, during the deep and protracted crisis that Greece has experienced, several production transformations have taken place that remain partly undiscovered. The present paper attempts to analyse the characteristics of large firms that drove their profitability and improved their resilience during the crucial time period 2011-16.

Description: Purpose - This study examines the causal relationship between exports and economic growth in sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries during the period 1980 to 2017. The study also examines whether the causality between these two macroeconomic variables depends on the countries' stage of development as proxied by their per capita income. Design/methodology/approach - The study uses a panel cointegration test and panel Granger-causality model to examine the link between exports and growth. The study also incorporates external debt as an intermittent variable in a bivariate setting between exports and economic growth, thereby creating a dynamic multivariate panel Granger-causality model. Findings - Although the study found the existence of a long-run relationship between exports and economic growth, the study failed to find any export-led growth response in both low-income and middle-income countries. Instead, the study found evidence of a bidirectional causality and a neutrality response in middle-income and low-income countries, respectively. The study, therefore, concludes that the benefits of an export-led growth hypothesis may have been oversold, and that the strategy may not be desirable to some low-income developing countries. Practical implications - These findings have important policy implications as they indicate that the causality between exports and economic growth in SSA countries varies with the countries' stage of development. Consistent with the contemporary literature, the study cautions low-income SSA countries against over-relying on an export-led growth strategy to achieve a sustained growth path as no causality between exports and economic growth has been found to exist in those countries. Instead, such countries should consider pursuing new growth strategies by building the domestic demand side of their economies alongside their export promotion strategies in order to expand the real sector of their economies. For middle-income countries, the study recommends that both export promotion strategies and pro-growth policies should be intensified as economic growth and exports have been found to reinforce each other in those countries. Originality/value - Unlike the previous studies, the current study disaggregated the full sample of SSA countries into two subsets - one comprising of low-income countries and the other consisting of middle-income countries. In addition, the study uses a multivariate Granger-causality model in order to address the emission-of-variable bias. To our knowledge, this may be the first study of its kind in recent years to examine in detail the causal relationship between exports and economic growth in SSA countries using an ECM-based multivariate panel Granger-causality model.

Description: Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to examine the correlation between firm size, growth and profitability along with other firm-specific variables (like leverage, competition and asset tangibility), macroeconomic variable (like GDP growth-business cycle) and stock market development variable (like MCR). Design/methodology/approach - Using the COMPUSTAT Global database this work uses panel dynamic fixed effects model for nearly 12,001 unique non-financial listed and active firms from 1995 to 2016 for 12 industrial and emerging Asia-Pacific economies. This interrelationship was also examined for small, medium and large size companies classified based on three alternate measures such as total assets, net sales and MCR of firms. Findings - The persistence of profits coefficient was found to be positive and modest. There is evidence of a negative size-profitability and positive growth-profitability relationship suggesting that initially profitability increases with the growth of the firm but eventually, overtime, gains in profit rates reduce, as size increases indicting that large size breeds inefficiency. The relationship between firm's leverage ratio and its asset tangibility is found to be negative with profitability. The business cycle and stock market development variables suggest a positive relationship with the profitability of firms. However, the significance of estimated coefficients was mixed and varied among different selected Asia-Pacific economies. Practical implications - The study has economic implications on issues such as industrial concentration, risk and optimum size of firms for practicing managers of modern enterprise in emerging markets. Originality/value - The analysis of the relationship between the firm size, growth and profitability is uniquely determined under a dynamic panel fixed effects framework using firm-specific variables along with macroeconomic and financial development determinants of profitability. This relationship is estimated for a large and new data set of 12 industrial and emerging Asia-Pacific economies.

Description: Purpose - This research aims to study the effect of R&D (research and development) enablers and barriers as well as industrial property on exploration, their influence on exploitation and finally the possible impact on innovative outcome (IO) as a result variable. The IO can be defined as the orientation towards new or improved products, services and processes, as well as towards penetration and greater market share, which the company has obtained as a result of innovative processes. Design/methodology/approach - For this purpose, a new relationship model is defined, which is empirically contrasted in a quantitative study. We use a sample of large firms from different economic sectors with a high level of investment in R&D. Findings - The results indicate a close relationship between exploration and exploitation processes, as well as a positive impact on the innovative outcome. Moreover, the type of relationship that R&D enablers and barriers have with exploration is demonstrated and the lack of a positive effect of industrial property on exploration. Practical implications - These results may lead to new markets opening up and the creation or improvement of new products, services or processes in diverse sectors of highly innovative firms. Originality/value - This research aims to study the effect of R&D enablers and barriers and industrial property on learning flows and, finally, the possible impact on the innovative outcome. A new theoretical model of relationships is defined, and it is the first time that it is empirically tested.

Description: This study sets out to review in detail the available information on SMEs crisis management. Despite SMEs' crucial role in the economy, relatively little research has been carried out on the effects of the economic crisis on SMEs and how they can cope with a crisis. This work will generate fresh insight into the crisis management for SMEs and provide a clear and easily understandable framework to survive COVID-19 and beyond. Ensuring sound cash flow during the crisis is the center of our framework. It is also crucial to have timely, accurate information and confident, courageous management. It will enable accurate analysis of the situation to restore or establish a new level of homeostasis from the perspective of bounded rationality. There is no generic treatment for overcoming a crisis. Tailor-made strategies and implementations empower companies to approach crisis resolution in the context of equifinality. There is only one goal: to survive the crisis. Yet, every company will have its own unique way to reach this goal.

Description: The main goal of the study was to examine or investigate the impact of strategic management practices on the growth of SMEs in Ghana. Purposive sampling technique was employed to sample 190 SMEs in Accra, though 150 SMEs responded to the questionnaire. With the help of SPSS version 22, Multiple regression analysis was conducted to assess the impact of strategic management practices on the performance and hence growth of SMEs in Ghana. The study revealed a significant positive relationship between strategy formulation and growth of SMEs in Ghana. The study also found a significant positive relationship between strategy implementation and the growth of SMEs in Ghana, but found a negative relationship between strategy evaluation and growth of SMEs in Ghana. However, overall, the study found a positive relationship between effective and efficient application of strategic management practices and the growth of SMEs in Ghana. As a contribution to policy and practice, the study recommended among others that policy makers, managers and owners of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) should employ strategic management experts especially in the field of strategy evaluation to enhance the quality of their strategy evaluation process so as to positively influence the performance and growth of SMEs.

Description: This paper explores how governments may efficiently inform the public about an epidemic to induce compliance with their confinement measures. Using an information design framework, we find the government has an incentive to either downplay or exaggerate the severity of the epidemic if it heavily prioritizes the economy over population health or vice versa. Importantly, we find that the level of economic inequality in the population has an effect on these distortions. The more unequal the disease's economic impact on the population is, the less the government exaggerates and the more it downplays the severity of the epidemic. When the government weighs the economy and population health sufficiently equally, however, the government should always be fully transparent about the severity of the epidemic.

Description: This essay examines how different individual and collective actors interpreted the initial weeks of the worldwide COVID-19 outbreak from the German perspective. During this early phase, knowledge about COVID-19 was quite limited and uncertain, which also influenced the ability to assess (potential) impacts. The analysis relies on twitter data and traces the main arguments in the public German discourse between January and March 2020. It shows that actors ascribed different meanings to the outbreak - either recognizing or negating the gravity of the COVID-19 threat. Shortly before the first German lockdown, the seriousness of the COVID-19 threat had begun to feature prominently within the public discourse.

Description: The successful and rapid achievement of sustainability and climate protection goals is increasingly getting into the focus of political, economic, and societal action. Against this background, the energy industry contributes and will further contribute to corresponding decarbonization in Germany and throughout Europe. Indeed, it already provides a significant contribution to the Paris Agreement and European Green Deal. In this light, the next transformation phase to a sustainable energy system is inevitably linked to the modernization and, in particular, to the digitalization of the energy industry. The aim of this thesis paper is to intensify the discussion on the digitalization of the energy industry and, in particular, to outline recommendations for flexible and proactive action by all stakeholders. The University of Bayreuth, the Project Group Business & Information Systems Engineering of the Fraunhofer FIT, and the European transmission system operator TenneT are united by the vision of climate-neutral economic growth based on the innovative strength of the European economy. In 2021, decarbonization is already shaping the digitalization of the energy industry: After the initiated steps to transform the energy industry towards more sustainability in the course of the energy turnaround in recent years, it is now a matter of accelerating sustainable growth while continuing to keep the energy supply secure and economical. A crucial building block in this development is the electrification of the heating and transportation sector. Accordingly, we discuss the role of grid expansion with respect to sector coupling and emphasize the digitalization of end-to-end energy industry processes. In this context, we see decentralized digital identities as a promising way to bridge the current digital gap and to address the need for digital certificates in the light of decarbonization. Against the urgency of climate policy action, we recommend an appropriate innovation policy to enable field tests agilely. Finally, we draw a perspective on the monitoring of CO2 emissions of grid expansion projects. This paper is aimed at political decision- makers, energy industry stakeholders, and all citizens interested in energy policy.

Description: Exploring Markets" is planned as a paper series discussing niche markets with interesting characteristics. The paper on hand focuses on the secondary market of the trading card game "Magic the Gathering", in which players play against each other with decks composed of cards they have collected. Recent high-volume trades raise the question if the investment in pop culture collectibles in general and in Magic the Gathering trading cards in particular can be considered as a legitimateand viable investment form. To answer this question, price developments and market characteristics are analyzed. The paper explicitly aims at people that have never heard of Magic the Gathering and are curious about its basic mechanisms and economics.

Description: Dieser Beitrag untersucht die Entwicklung der Akzeptanz der Empfehlung G.13 Satz 1 des Deutschen Corporate Governance Kodex (in der Fassung vom 16.
Description: This study investigates the development of the acceptance of Recommendation G.13 sentence 1 of the German Corporate Governance Code (dated December 16, 2019, formerly 4.2.3 paragraph 4 sentence 1), which provides ceilings for early termination of contracts of members of the executive board. The severance payment amounts of early retiring members of the executive board of DAX companies in relation to annual compensation and remaining contract term are significantly lower in the period 2015 to 2019 than between 2010 and 2014. However, there is no evidence of a significant decrease in severance cases. In the DAX companies' declarations of conformity pursuant to § 161 AktG, the rate of deviation with respect to the recommendation under consideration is decreasing, but an exceeding of the recommended upper limit is not mentioned in any of the following declarations of conformity. Finally, there are increasingly other forms of generous payments to departing board members in addition to the less generous severance payments.

Description: The years following the 2008 financial crisis have been characterized by the emergence of new financial service providers, so-called fintech. The term is defined and understood differently in the literature. There is an agreement that fintech is composed of the words "financial" and "technology". Regarding the different views and definitions, there is a great heterogeneity in the literature and this working paper tries to systematize them. Furthermore, different justifications for its existence are examined and a proposal for categorization is made. Argumentatively, various opportunities and risks are highlighted that arise in connection with Fintech. Finally, various ideas and starting points for further research are derived from the arguments listed.

Description: The current phase of low interest rates poses major challenges for banks. A continuous decline in the interest result, which is so important for the profitability of banks, has been observed for years, as it is becoming in-creasingly difficult for banks to generate sufficient income from the interest margin. This is partlydue to the European Central Bank's expansive monetary policy. However, other factors, such as advancing digitization, also play a role here. The structure of the German banking market and the mostly strong focus of German banks on interest-bearing business are also increasingly becoming a problem. Still, the question arises, whether the current phase of low interest rates is actually a serious threat to banks or whether they are complaining at a high level.

Description: This discussion paper aims at describing the risk-adjusted return of European sustainable and conventional investment portfolios and comparing them to determine whether sustainable investment portfolios generate superior risk-adjusted returns. The paper is based on the bachelor thesis of Julius Gardenier. In fulfilling this aim, we actively construct sustainable positively screenedand best-in-class portfolios using the Sustainalytics ESG risk rating with the help of modern portfolio theory. In a second step, the Sharpe Ratios of these portfolios are compared with those of the Euro Stoxx 50, as a proxy for a conventional portfolio, for the time horizon between 2005 and 2019 thatis divided into ten instances on whose SharpeRatios paired sample t-tests are applied. Results show a statistically significant higher mean Sharpe Ratio for both types of sustainable portfolios when compared to the Euro Stoxx 50 for the periodunder investigation. Additionally, it was found that best-in-class portfolios yielded higher mean Sharpe Ratios. We conclude that, under reference to the paper's limitations, sustainable investments yielded superior risk-adjusted returns when compared to the conventional investment portfolio. Furthermore, the paper's findings identify recommendations for future research and may contribute to the growing body of academic literature in the field of sustainable finance.

Description: Professional football generates billions in revenue in Germany alone. After fifteen consecutive revenue records, the Covid 19 pandemic is leading to revenue declines in the Bundesliga. Football fans have played a major role in these declines. They no longer go to the football stadiums week after week to loudly support their teams. Not because they don't want to, but because it is no longer allowed due to the pandemic since the sixth matchday of the current 2020/21 season. In addition to the findings of declining revenues due to the lack of ticket sales, there is also the question of the significance of fans in the context of advancing commercialisation. Could the current pandemic-related spectator exclusion possibly also enact thought processes to deliberately reduce fan participation?

Description: [Conclusion] As far as we are aware, this study is one of the first to give a comprehensive overview of research on trust in the context of technology. It thus goes beyond previous studies that examine trust in the context of specific technologies in that it uncovers and structures the status quo of scientific research in this area, with a special focus on trust in technologies. Furthermore, this article contributes to current research by deriving five fundamental propositions for future research. The added value of this study lies in the derivation of propositions that not only consider topics for future research as often done in literature reviews, but also with regard to methods, applied theories, and necessary conceptual considerations. Thus, this article is research-oriented and its practical added value arises within the scientific discourse. [...]

Description: This paper explores how firms that lack expertise in machine learning (ML) can leverage the so-called AI Flywheel effect. This effect designates a virtuous cycle by which, as an ML product is adopted and new user data are fed back to the algorithm, the product improves, enabling further adoptions. However, managing this feedback loop is difficult, especially when the algorithm is contracted out. Indeed, the additional data that the AI Flywheel effect generates may change the provider's incentives to improve the algorithm over time. We formalize this problem in a simple two-period moral hazard framework that captures the main dynamics among ML, data acquisition, pricing, and contracting. We find that the firm's decisions crucially depend on how the amount of data on which the machine is trained interacts with the provider's effort. If this effort has a more (less) significant impact on accuracy for larger volumes of data, the firm underprices (overprices) the product. Interestingly, these distortions sometimes improve social welfare, which accounts for the customer surplus and profits of both the firm and provider. Further, the interaction between incentive issues and the positive externalities of the AI Flywheel effect has important implications for the firm's data collection strategy. In particular, the firm can boost its profit by increasing the product's capacity to acquire usage data only up to a certain level. If the product collects too much data per user, the firm's profit may actually decrease, i.e., more data is not necessarily better. As a result, the firm should consider reducing its product's data acquisition capacity when its initial dataset to train the algorithm is large enough.

Description: The up-or-out rule states that assistants in partnerships (or universities) must become partners after a certain period of time or have to leave the partnership. Permanent assistantship is not possible. This raises the question of why someone is not being allowed to remain an assistant if he generates more in this position than he costs, even if his productivity is insufficient to promote him to a partner. Different economic explanations to answer this question are examined. After rejecting the widespread but implausible approach that the partnership has to dismiss assistants in their own interest in order to bind themselves to their implicit promotion promise, the answer is that in partnerships the situation in question does not occur at all and the application of the up-or-down out rule is therefore to be assessed as efficient.

Description: The starting point of this paper is the ongoing discussion among academics and practitioners on how to define qualityin university teaching. The different perspectives of the Humboldtian model of higher education, the fields of university didactics and quality management are brought together in a definition of "good teaching" in higher education. With reference to John Hattie's seminal study, five quality factors are proposed for higher education teaching: quality of the (1) curriculum, (2) didactics and methodology of teaching, (3) learning media, (4) performance assessment, and (5) student support. These factors have to be implemented in different forms of study: on campus studies, distance learning, dual studies and part-time studies. Due to the special characteristics of each of these forms, different challenges arise.Quality management in teaching also has to consider in how far the objectives of good university teaching have been achieved in a given situation. Four levels of measurement - reaction, learning, behaviour and results - clarify the distinction between output (direct and immediate results) and outcomes (long-term effects) of university teaching. The discussion of what teaching quality in higher education really means will remain a "hot topic". Continuous changes in society ensure that the discussion must go on.Especially the ongoing developments in digitalization will give new ground for this discussion. The common denominator is that high quality teaching should provide students with the competencies required for their future professional and personal life.

Description: Firms cooperate in inter‐firm networks to foster their competitiveness and improve their innovation outcomes. In many cases, network facilitators who are either embedded in a lead firm or a third‐party organization manage the cooperation among the network firms. This qualitative study adopts a microfoundations perspective to investigate the behavioural antecedents of the network facilitators, their facilitation practices and the related network‐level outcomes. Results show that lead‐firm facilitators more strongly invest in trust‐building measures since they are considered deficient in benevolence and integrity. Without these investments, they run the risk that conflicts of interest hinder the stimulation of positive network‐level outcomes. Third‐party facilitators, by contrast, enjoy certain credits of trust and focus on balancing firm interests from the network's activation, but need to invest in enhancing their competencies and skills with regard to the industry the firms operate in. The findings contribute to developing a theory of network facilitation by providing a nuanced understanding of how network‐level outcomes can be reduced to individual‐level factors.

Description: The purpose of this case study is to explore the topic of organizational culture and ultimately define the culture of HealthIA, a rapidly growing service organization operating in the hospitality industry. By collecting qualitative data through interviews and focus groups we aim to benchmark the organization of study against identified practices of healthy culture and provide suggestions for transformation and change. We base our analysis on well-researched cultural theories, namely Schein's ten step assessment process, Cameron and Quinn's Competing Values Framework and House et al.'s GLOBE study. For defining HealthIA's organizational culture, we make use of Schein's three levels of culture, determining the artefacts, espoused beliefs and values, and basic underlying assumptions. HealthIA is identified as culturally diverse with a communitarian focus valuing teamwork and relationships with an underlying assumption that the purpose of the organization is to be highly profitable. Since employee perceptions towards the organizational culture were found to be negatively charged and misaligned with the cultural perceptions of management, an incremental cultural transformation is advised. By extending identified desirable values such as innovation and transparency the organization can improve its culture towards more effective practices. HealthIA's leaders were identified as a crucial component of cultural change and are suggested to be empathetic, encouraging, and communicative. Moreover, HealthIA is advised to align strategy and culture, practice clear and consistent leadership, and emphasize employee socialization practices.

Description: In the field of supply chain management (SCM), attracting and developing appropriate talent is critical for achieving most SCM goals, as extensive skills are necessary to do the job properly. In order to ensure that future‐proof talent can continue to emerge in this discipline, the role of SCM executives is extremely important. Although many studies have been conducted in the field of talent management (TM), the future role of SCM executives has been mostly neglected in research. The present empirical study addresses this gap, taking into consideration the fourth industrial revolution, as innovation in technology continues to drive significant changes in the SCM field. Aiming to investigate the extent to which increasing digitalization is influencing the future role of SCM executives, a Delphi study with 103 experts from industry, academics, and politics/associations was carried out. In order to identify meaningful topic clusters from the data, fuzzy c‐means clustering was used. From an actor‐network theory perspective, our results show that in some areas of TM, digitalization is leading to a strong fusion of SCM executives and digital technologies, as well as to a clear division of roles, in which either SCM leaders or technology will dominate in the future.

Description: Nonprofit arts organizations face conflicting objectives to balance—or more specifically, to create—artistic and educational value and to generate financial income from various sources. Pay‐what‐you‐want (PWYW), a participative pricing mechanism where services have no fixed price and customers actively decide what to pay, is a novel pricing mechanism and is of high interest for organizations and researchers alike. Based on the concepts of loss aversion and gain, this study presents a field experiment to test the effects of different PWYW pricing strategies on the amount of money paid by visitors of a German photo biennial. Explicitly, the provisions of minimum, maximum, and suggested external reference prices are compared to a setting with no external reference prices. We test the derived hypotheses, discuss the results, and provide implications for future research, as well as for the management of nonprofit arts organizations.
