    Abstract: The article considers the problem of evaluating the effect of promotions held in a company. This problem remains relevant in our time, as evidenced by various studies on this topic. The authors of the article provides an algorithm for evaluating the promotions effectiveness based on the sales analysis of time series. In this case, promotions are considered as interventions that cause deviations from the main trend of the time series, which can be included in the model as a separate fictitious regressor. The paper also considers mathematical models for representing the intervention and the main characteristics of interventions. To evaluate the systematic component of the time series, it is proposed to use the Prophet forecasting package, since it has a number of advantages that allow one to more accurately isolate the effect of the ongoing campaign. The evaluation algorithm was tested on historical data for a specific product of the product line of stores at gas stations. The results of evaluating the effectiveness of the evaluated product.

    Abstract: Automatic fault diagnosis is becoming increasingly important for assessing a chiller’s degradation state and plays a key role in modern maintenance strategies. Data-driven approaches have already become well established for this purpose as they rely on historical data and are therefore more generally applicable compared to their model-based counterparts. Existing chiller fault diagnosis models, however, require labelled data from the target system, which are often not available. Therefore, in this paper, a data-driven fault diagnosis model is proposed that deploys domain adaptation techniques to enable the transfer of knowledge amongst heterogeneous chillers. In particular, the model utilizes transfer component analysis (TCA) and a support vector machine with adapting decision boundaries (SVM-AD) to diagnose faults by aggregating labelled source and unlabelled target domain data in the training phase. Furthermore, it is demonstrated how the model parameters can be tuned to ensure effective classification performance, which is then evaluated by use of fault data stemming from different chiller types. Experimental results show that with the proposed approach faults can be diagnosed with high accuracy for cases when labelled target domain data are not available.

    Abstract: Polyurethane foam is one of the most versatile polymers widely used in the automotive industry. However, due to the rising amount of polyurethane foam waste in the environment, there is growing research attention focusing on circular economy solutions to closing the material loop. This study aimed to determine the possible changes in thermo-mechanical properties between rigid polyurethane prepared using polyols derived from depolymerization of commercial polyurethane foam with benchmark rigid polyurethane (Ben PU). Polyurethane foams containing dispersion polyol were reacted with dipropylene glycol (DPG) and diethylene glycol (DEG) with a ratio of DPG: DEG of 1:1 in the presence of a consumable catalyst (Di-n-butyl amine). The recovered polyol was used as a raw material replacing 100% benchmark rigid polyurethane petroleum-based polyester polyol to produce the recycled polyurethane (Rec PU). Thermal analysis was conducted to measure the recycled polyurethane's glass transition temperatures (Tg) using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Tensile strength, elastic modulus, toughness, and hardness test of the recycled polyurethane were conducted under three different temperatures; 24°C, 40°C, and 60°C. From the DSC results, the glass transition temperatures for the recycled and the benchmark rigid polyurethane occurred at 43°C and 50.4°C, respectively. Both polymers showed the brittle-ductile transition from 24°C to 40°C. Tensile strength for recycled polyurethane was lower than that of benchmark rigid polyurethane by 29-43% and a corresponding 24-50% decrease in elastic modulus. Recycled polyurethane recorded lower toughness than petroleum-based pure polyurethane by 13-16%. However, the recycled polymer recorded high shored D values than the benchmark rigid polyurethane by 9-29%. This study reveals that recycled polyol could be used as feedstock for polyurethane production with applications tailored to its mechanical properties.

    Abstract: In diesem Kapitel wird ein innovatives zweistufiges Klassifikationsframework vorgestellt, das auf Basis multipler Modelle für den Sprechausdruck qualitätsinduzierende Kriterien bei Callcentergesprächen mit erklärungsfähigen Regeln prognostizieren kann. Durch diese Basisklassifikation wird eine symbolische Repräsentation des Sprechausdrucks erzeugt, die sowohl für Experten verständlich ist als auch von Klassifikationsalgorithmen verarbeitet werden kann. In der zweiten Stufe werden mit Lernverfahren die erkannten sprecherisch-stimmlichen Merkmale zu einer Klassifikation der Qualitätsfaktoren zusammengeführt. Regeln und Entscheidungsbäume bilden die funktionalen Beziehungen zu den relevanten Merkmalen ab und können so anhand der erkannten sprecherisch-stimmlichen Merkmale die wahrgenommenen Qualitätsfaktoren erklären.

In particular, modeling the structure of the Internet has inspired several novel graph metrics for assessing important topological robustness features of large complex networks. This survey provides a comparative overview of these metrics, presents their strengths and limitations for analyzing the robustness of the Internet topology, and outlines a conceptual tool set in order to facilitate their future adoption by Internet research and practice but also other areas of network science.

    Abstract: Dichroic organic films have found a broad application in various optoelectronic devices. One efficient method for the production of thin dichroic films is the deposition of the film onto aligning polymer surface. Scientists propose different explanations concerning the mechanisms of the molecules aligning. Here, we report the aligning of squaraine (Sq) molecules on the different aligning polymer surfaces, independent from the morphology of the Sq deposits. Aligned polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) layers were produced by either unidirectional hot friction transfer or by PTFE decomposition in vacuum with the activation of the gas by accelerated electrons and the consequent unidirectional rubbing with a cloth. Sq films grown on the aligned PTFE surfaces and on the nanostructured polycarbonate (PC) surfaces were found to exhibit dichroic optical absorption spectra. Despite different shape and orientation of the Sq crystals on the PTFE and the PC surfaces, the absorption of polarized light was shown to exhibit one pattern. Variations in the morphology of Sq films on different surfaces were explained by the competitive participation of different growth mechanisms, which depended on the properties of the deposited compound, the aligning layer and the growth conditions. The PTFE aligning layers can be useful in organic electronics due to low-temperature processing.

    Abstract: Leishmaniasis is a vector-borne disease caused by protozoan parasites of the genus Leishmania. In Armenia visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is re-emerging since 1999 after a long break of 30 years, with 167 cases recorded until 2019. Molecular diagnosis of VL was implemented only in 2016, and the causative agent was identified as L. infantum. In the present study we expanded the investigation of the causative agent to a characterization at strain level and the identification of its phylogenetic position among the L. infantum genotypes circulating worldwide. This is the first study addressing genetic diversity and population structure of L. infantum in Armenia and in Transcaucasia. Armenia is an extremely interesting region due to its bio-geographic specificities e.g. the high number of different climates in this small mountainous country and the observed high diversity of sand fly species, part of which occurring in very high altitudes. Ecological niche modeling based on registered VL cases and sand fly vectors collected in active VL foci revealed that the risk of further spread of VL is very high due to climate change. Studies of this region should be expanded to enable targeted control measures.

    Abstract: To guarantee fiscal sustainability of municipalities, all countries establish fiscal regulations and supervision. However, there is no guarantee that such regulation will be effective as the German state North Rhine-Westphalia shows. For decades, fiscal supervision suffered due to weak rules and inadequate implementation. In 2011, the state changed its supervisory system in favour of stricter rules. This chapter identifies causes for the persistence of an obviously failing system and reasons for its transformation. Persistence refers to political considerations and excessive demands in practice. The institutional change was caused by the global financial crisis making the old system unworkable and changing the actors’ mindsets. The state reacted by strengthening rules and their implementation simultaneously. Despite positive fiscal effects, the reform had negative impacts on local autonomy.

    Abstract: Im April 2016 wurde die Europäische Datenschutz-Grundverordnung (DSGVO) nach jahrelangen Verhandlungen verabschiedet. Doch erst mit dem Ablauf der Übergangsfrist erlangte die DSGVO am 25. Mai 2018 ihre unmittelbare Geltung auch in Deutschland. Die Zielstellung des Unionsgesetzgebers, das europäische Datenschutzrecht zu harmonisieren und zu modernisieren, steht in Zeiten von allgegenwärtiger Automatisierung, Digitalisierung und Vernetzung vor immensen Herausforderungen. Die DSGVO begegnet dieser Entwicklung mit einer Regelung, die automatisierte Einzelfallentscheidungen grundsätzlich mit einem Verbot belegt. Die von der Datenverarbeitung betroffene Person soll somit vor den Auswirkungen einer Entscheidung geschützt werden, die ausschließlich auf der datengestützten Grundlage einer maschinenverantworteten Bewertung gefällt wird. Dieses Kapitel stellt den Regelungsinhalt des Art. 22 DSGVO und damit die automatisierten Entscheidungen im Einzelfall einschließlich dem Profiling dar. Insbesondere werden die Praxisrelevanz und die Wirksamkeit der Norm in Zeiten von Big Data untersucht, um zu bewerten, inwiefern die DSGVO die Risiken von maschinell gefällten Entscheidungen adressiert.

    Abstract: Processing biological materials with 3-dimensional (3D) printers has attracted increasing interest in several research areas. At the same time, off-the-shelf solutions are increasingly available in a wider variety to meet the current market demand. However, most of the available bioprinters are closed source, thus, modifications are quite challenging or require an avoidable consultation process with the manufacturer. Furthermore, the entry prices for basic machines amount to several thousands of euros. Whereas, high-end 3D bio printers with a vast array of features are available for several hundred thousand euros. Due to the immense potential of this tool in the field of biotechnology it is important to extend the availability of this technology for research purposes in terms of adaptability and price. This ongoing work focuses on open-source 3D printer heads with the ability to extrude biological materials. The print heads include several techniques to process low as well as high viscose biomaterials such as agar and gelatin. Additionally, obstacles such as continuous substrate tempering or integration into existing 3D printers are addressed. The work presented is open source and thus freely adaptable to any user’s specific needs. Our goal is to process a diverse range of biomaterials with different print techniques.

    Abstract: The main aim of FE model updating is to iteratively correct the inaccurate parameters in a structural model so that the agreement between numerical predictions and modal test results is improved. Modeling the boundary conditions and contact interfaces between the different components is a challenge that needs to be taken into account in regards to the computational cost of the model for the iterative stage of the study. For instance, an extremely detailed model is of no use if each iteration takes hours to solve. A bottom-up approach can be followed to generate a highly accurate FE model by gradually increasing the complexity of the studied structure. This requires of a careful test planning phase to acquire experimental data from the structure in different boundary conditions and assembly stages. An overhead crane runway beam FE model is updated in this study case. Three FE models of increasing complexity in their boundary conditions and contact interfaces are optimized and updated with their three corresponding modal experimental datasets. This bottom-up approach allows dividing a complex problem in smaller phases, which results in a smaller number of design variables present on each model updating cycle. This is essential for the successful application of optimization algorithms with a limited computational power. In a qualitative sense, it allows the analyst to have a deeper understanding of the model from its conception and to have a solid grasp of the different what-if scenarios.

    Abstract: The present review defines the state of the art of parabolic trough collectors and identifies the concepts in the framework of innovation’s requirements. These are the increase of operating temperatures and of the power plant’s overall efficiency, as well as the cost reductions of the solar field by eliminating components and the reduction of parasitic power consumption (Pitz-Paal et al., 2007). The study investigates 34 collector concepts and classifies them according to their main structural features like mechanisms or materials. The categories include conventional collectors in Category A, collectors with alternative structure and sheet reflectors in Category B, with non-metallic materials like sandwich composite structures and concrete in Category C, with enclosed aperture in Category D and with fixed focus in Category E. For the technical-economic comparison, two conventional collectors vs. 14 innovations are analysed, following a design engineering method. The definition of a metric table defines the technical comparison criteria for those collectors suitable for thermo-oils or molten salts as heat transfer fluid. Results show that collectors operating with molten salts, instead of thermo-oil, have a significant techno-economic potential for utility scale application, for instance, the Molten Salt Trough, the UltimateTrough and the SkyFuelDSP (dispatchable solar power) as forerunners of their respective categories. Results show also that the inflatable Heliovis collector operating with thermo-oil has a relevant economic potential.

    Abstract: Over the course of the last decade 3D printing has become a more established technology in terms of prototype development (rapid prototyping). The current effort is focused on transferring this knowhow into a product driven approach in order to manufacture even small batch sizes more economic. In terms of this work, this idea is adapted for the development of injection molds (rapid manufacturing). Hereby, a hardened polymer is used to create a forming cavity instead of tool-steel. In order to fulfil the mechanical process requirements of micro injection molding such as form stability under temperature and pressure this cavity is nevertheless integrated into a metal housing. A first set of experiments has been carried out using this develop mold to verify the capabilities of the developed prototype as well as molding process. Based on these first results, an optimization is carried out to improve the next iteration of this molding tool.

    Abstract: The current state of technology for 3D printing with biomaterials is based on the extrusion of viscous materials. Mostly, extrusion heads utilize pneumatic pressure systems or stepper motors to force the substrate onto a surface. These methods are well developed for high viscouse materials. However, processing low viscous liquids may cause leakages in the system. This could be solved by applying continuous extrusion. Additionally, in order to process gelable substrates, such as gelatine and agar, tempered print heads in combination with a multi stage tempering system are required to prevent the system from clogging. The ongoing work presented in this paper focuses on the development of an extrusion system, which should be able to process multiple viscosities of gelatine sequentially. In order to achieve this, several measurements to examine the properties, as well as the material parameters of different biomaterials are performed. In this process gel point, force resistance and elasticity are the factors of particularly interest. Due to their ability to gel and their availability, the most relevant biomaterials are gelatine and agar. Using this data, an extrusion system involving a peristaltic pump, a heated tube and a nozzle, has been developed. The next step envisaged is to calibrate the extruder based on the obtained data and finally to validate the printing process by printing simple geometric structures. Assuming that a positive evaluation is obtained, the printing system will be tested for printing first organic test structures from patient data using the examined biomaterials.

    Abstract: In this report we combine the catalytic properties of CeO2 nanoparticles with their transduction ability for photoelectrochemical sensing. This study highlights the usage of CeO2 providing catalytic activity towards H2O2, but only with a limited excitation range in the UV for the construction of a sensing system. In order to improve the photoelectrocatalysis of CeO2 nanoparticles by extending their excitation to visible light, Au/CeO2 core/shell hybrid nanoparticles have been synthesized. The hybrid nanoparticles are fixed on electrodes, allowing for the generation of photocurrents, the direction of which can be controlled by the electrode potential (without bias). The application of the hybrid nanoparticles results in an enhanced photocurrent amplitude under white light illumination as compared to the pure CeO2 nanoparticles. Wavelength-dependent measurements confirm the participation of the Au core in the signal transduction. This can be explained by improved charge carrier generation within the hybrid particles. Thus, by using a plasmonic element the photoelectochemical response of a catalytic nanoparticle (i.e. CeO2) has been spectrally extended. The effect can be exploited for sensorial hydrogen peroxide detection. Here higher photocatalytic current responses have been found for the hybrid particles fixed to gold electrodes although the catalytic reduction has been comparable for both types of nanoparticles. Thus, it can be demonstrated that Au/CeO2 core–shell nanoparticles allow the utilization of visible light for photoelectrochemical hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) detection with improved sensitivity under white light illumination or application of such particles with only visible light excitation, which is not possible for pure CeO2. With help of the layer-by-layer (LbL) technique for nanoparticle immobilization, the electrode response can be adjusted and with a 5 layers electrode a low detection limit of about 3 μM H2O2 with a linear detection range up to 2000 μM is obtained.

    Abstract: In the course of classical optics manufacturing glass components are in permanent direct contact with aqueous operating materials. Such contact leads to a certain absorption of water and hydrogenous compounds that may induce severe glass defects. In this contribution, absorption of hydrogen and other contaminants during grinding of glass was observed and qualitatively detected via laser‐induced breakdown spectroscopy. It is shown that hydrogen, calcium, magnesium, and carbon are implanted into the glass surface where the contaminant concentration increases over grinding time or contact time of the glass surface with water and the grinding tool, respectively. The contaminants hydrogen, calcium, and magnesium can be attributed to the water used as lubricant. In contrast, carbon most likely originates from wear debris of the used silicon carbide grinding pads. Several possible mechanisms that lead to such surface contamination of glasses during grinding – diffusion, accumulation in micro cracks as well as the formation of hydrated silica – are finally introduced.

    Abstract: This study investigated how touching and being touched by a humanoid robot affects human physiology, impressions of the interaction, and attitudes towards humanoid robots. 21 healthy adult participants completed a 3 (touch style: touching, being touched, pointing) × 2 (body part: hand vs buttock) within-subject design using a Pepper robot. Skin conductance response (SCR) was measured during each interaction. Perceived impressions of the interaction (i.e., friendliness, comfort, arousal) were measured per questionnaire after each interaction. Participants’ demographics and their attitude towards robots were also considered. We found shorter SCR rise times in the being touched compared to the touching condition, possibly reflecting psychological alertness to the unpredictability of robot-initiated contacts. The hand condition had shorter rise times than the buttock condition. Most participants evaluated the hand condition as most friendly and comfortable and the robot-initiated interactions as most arousing. Interacting with Pepper improved attitudes towards robots. Our findings require future studies with larger samples and improved procedures. They have implications for robot design in all domains involving tactile interactions, such as caring and intimacy.

    Abstract: The sudden appearance and rapid spread of the coronavirus in the beginning of 2020 has caused the loss of life, immeasurable suffering and it already impacted the world economy and everyone’s personal life. But times of tremendous crises also spark human creativity and innovation behavior. The coronavirus pandemic will be most likely and hopefully soon resolved through technologies, e.g., a drug and, ultimately, a new vaccination, flanked by medical devices and the health system in general. Adequate technology transfer processes as the movement from knowledge, inventions, and innovative technologies from the lab into the private sector can contribute to the efficiency and speed of innovation. These processes are not linear and can be experienced as various interactions between actors and organizations of the science system with other social subsystems and citizens. In this edited volume, we provide insights on technology transfer that are relevant to scientists, technology transfer practitioners, and policymakers. The structure of the edited volume follows the seven dimensions identified in the state-of-the-art literature review by Battistella, De Toni, and Pillon (J Technol Transf 41: 1195–1234, 2016).

    Abstract: External stimuli are potent tools that Nature uses to control protein function and activity. For instance, during viral entry and exit, pH variations are known to trigger large protein conformational changes. In Nature, also the electron transfer (ET) properties of ET proteins are influenced by pH‐induced conformational changes. In this work, a pH‐controlled, reversible 310‐helix to α‐helix conversion (from acidic to highly basic pH values and vice versa) of a peptide supramolecular system built on a gold surface is described. The effect of pH on the ability of the peptide SAM to generate a photocurrent was investigated, with particular focus on the effect of the pH‐induced conformational change on photocurrent efficiency. The films were characterized by electrochemical and spectroscopic techniques, and were found to be very stable over time, also in contact with a solution. They were also able to generate current under illumination, with an efficiency that is the highest recorded so far with biomolecular systems.

    Abstract: Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), polyhexafluoropropylene (PHFP) and polychlorotrifluoroethylene (PCTFE) were heated to their decomposition temperature in a high vacuum. The emitted fragments passed an electron cloud, condensed on a substrate and formed fluoropolymer film. Growth rate of PTFE and PHFP films increased up to a factor five in the presence of the electron cloud. Mass spectrometry revealed changes in the mass spectra of fragments generated by thermal decomposition only and formed under electron activation. The observed changes were different for each fluoropolymer. Infrared spectroscopy (IRS) showed that the structure of the films was close to the structure of the bulk polymers. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) has revealed different morphologies of PTFE, PHFP and PCTFE films, suggesting a Volmer–Weber growth mechanism for PTFE and PHFP but a Frank-van der Merwe one for PCTFE. All films were smooth at nanoscale and transparent from ultraviolet to near-infrared region. Additional radio frequency (RF) plasma ignited in the emitted fragments at a low pressure increased mechanical characteristics of the films without losing their optical transparency and smoothness.

    Abstract: Künstliche Intelligenz, soweit besteht Einigkeit, hat das Potenzial, auch administrative Jobs zu verändern. Während in vielen Bereichen der Forschung die Arbeiten zur Künstlichen Intelligenz eine relativ lange Tradition aufweisen, ist das Personalmanagement ein Gebiet, in dem sich erst seit wenigen Jahren mit dem Thema beschäftigt wird. Es gibt viele Vorschläge zum Einsatz von Künstlicher Intelligenz im Personalmanagement, aber es mangelt an konkreten empirischen Beispielen. Dieser Beitrag versucht, im Rahmen einer Pilotstudie mit drei kleinen Datensätzen einen konkreten Anwendungsfall zu exemplifizieren. Mittels der einfachen Clusteranalyse aus der Gruppe des unsupervised Learnings sowie eines neuronalen Netzes aus der Gruppe des supervised Learnings werden Bewerbungsanschreiben analysiert. Dabei kann in Abhängigkeit der Qualität und Größe des Datensatzes gezeigt werden, dass die Clusteranalyse über Dokument-Wort-Matrizen menschliche Urteilsgruppen signifikant replizieren und darüber hinaus die Menge der optimalen Urteilsgruppen bestimmen kann. So müssten Recruiter nur noch exemplarische Bewerbungen je ermittelter Urteilsgruppe ansehen, um die Güte der Gruppe festzulegen. Mit Hinzunahme des neuronalen Netzes konnte eine Performancesteigerung sowohl bei der Replikation der menschlichen Urteile als auch im Falle der optimalen Menge der Urteilsgruppen in Abhängigkeit der Anzahl der verwendeten versteckten Neuronen erreicht werden. Dies beschränkt sich allerdings auf das Trainingsdatenset. Insofern kann abschließend festgehalten werden, dass die Verwendung beider Methoden ein erfolgversprechender Ansatz zur Einführung von Künstlicher Intelligenz im Recruiting darstellt.

Derart autonome Entitäten stellen die Rechtsordnung vor Herausforderungen. Sie taugen selbst nicht als Träger von Verantwortung und von Rechten. Aus diesem Grunde hinterlassen sie juristische Zurechnungslücken, wenn sie den Menschen ersetzen. Eine innovationsverträgliche Schließung solcher Lücken wird der Gesetzgeber nur erzielen, wenn er auf eine verwendungsbereichsspezifische Regulierung von Künstlicher Intelligenz setzt. Für das autonome Fahren ist dies bereits zum Teil gelungen.

    Abstract: The maker movement is a technology-based and collaborative creative movement that uses rapid prototyping technologies to create objects and products in innovative ways. It focuses on the collaborative, creative development and realization of innovative ideas and their implementation in publicly accessible spaces. The steady growth of this movement has been facilitated by recent technological progress and the many new digital manufacturing possibilities that support low-threshold access to technology. This development is increasingly attracting the interest of universities. In this study, we present a framework for the different forms and formats of knowledge and technology transfer, respectively the Third Mission, as curated by a selected university-based maker space: the ViNN:Lab (Venture Innovation Lab) in Germany. We derived the framework from the exploration of different forms and formats of transfer activities in the maker space and the development of the number of users and user groups within a time frame of 6 years (2014–2019). Besides developing insights into the development of involved users and forms of usage, in this study, we also examine the following activities: (a) outreach activities, (b) practical interactions, and (c) research and development. As part of this case study, we briefly discuss how the ViNN:Lab enhances university–industry interaction, attracts new and even unexpected partners beside company partners, and how the ViNN:Lab acts as a space for the development of new ideas.

    Abstract: In recent decades, much research effort has been invested in the development of photonic integrated circuits, and silicon-on-insulator technology has been established as a reliable platform for highly scalable silicon-based electro-optical modulators. However, the performance of such devices is restricted by the inherent material properties of silicon. An approach to overcoming these deficiencies is to integrate organic materials with exceptionally high optical nonlinearities into a silicon-on-insulator photonic platform. Silicon–organic hybrid photonics has been shown to overcome the drawbacks of silicon-based modulators in terms of operating speed, bandwidth, and energy consumption. This work reviews recent advances in silicon–organic hybrid photonics and covers the latest improvements to single components and device concepts. Special emphasis is given to the in-device performance of novel electro-optical polymers and the use of different electro-optical effects, such as the linear and quadratic electro-optical effect, as well as the electric-field-induced linear electro-optical effect. Finally, the inherent challenges of implementing non-linear optical polymers on a silicon photonic platform are discussed and a perspective for future directions is given.

    Abstract: Despite substantial investments, data science has failed to deliver significant business value in many companies. So far, the reasons for this problem have not been explored systematically. This study tries to find possible explanations for this shortcoming and analyses the specific challenges in data-driven projects. To identify the reasons that make data-driven projects fall short of expectations, multiple rounds of qualitative semi-structured interviews with domain experts with different roles in data-driven projects were carried out. This was followed by a questionnaire surveying 112 experts with experience in data projects from eleven industries. Our results show that the main reasons for failure in data-driven projects are (1) the lack of understanding of the business context and user needs, (2) low data quality, and (3) data access problems. It is interesting, that 54% of respondents see a conceptual gap between business strategies and the implementation of analytics solutions. Based on our results, we give recommendations for how to overcome this conceptual distance and carrying out data-driven projects more successfully in the future.

    Abstract: The technical and socio-economic systems that surround us are complex, non-linear, so it is impossible to study these systems without using models that describe random processes. To expand approaches to the random processes study, we proposed the specific evaluation algorithm for the case of the set of values of an absolutely continuous random variable divided into intervals, in each of which the random variable undergoes the corresponding functional transformation described by definite probability function. The proposed algorithm consists of three steps – the limitation of data, calculation and obtaining the transformation estimates. Firstly, with algorithm’s help, there is an ability to evaluate the mathematical expectation change. Secondly, the influence of the probabilistic transformation of a random variable at every interval on expected value can be evaluated also. The algorithm is basic but, if necessary, it may be complicated in order to obtain estimates of k-th central moments changes. In addition, the algorithm is able to be the part of another one, used for identifying the distribution law of a random variable - the result of a probabilistic transformation. As an example of the proposed algorithm implementation, the process of technological replacement of jobs in the digital transformation of the economy is considered.

    Abstract: Digitalization is a key driver throughout all drivers of change because its emerging and rapidly changing digital technologies lead to new products, services, and/or business models. Actors working in knowledge and technology transfer constantly have to keep up with the latest technological developments and cope with their enormous implications. To face these challenges, a variety of knowledge and technology transfer methods exist. This chapter provides an overview of these methods and illuminates the technology radar method as a potential digital tool for facilitating knowledge and technology transfer. Following the lean approach by Eric Ries, we document the process of the development of the technology radar. We present a web-based technology radar that is accessible to everyone on nearly any device, which encourages collaborative development. User testing with experts in the field of knowledge and technology transfer delivers insights and feedback for the further development of this digital tool. The results are conclusively discussed and then an outlook on the upcoming version of the technology radar, as well as different forms of usage in terms of knowledge and technology transfer, is provided.

    Abstract: Blood sampling as well as sample preparation are time consuming and requires a strict procedure, which is generally performed by medical trained personal. Not carrying out the procedure correctly could result in an infection of the patient or contamination of the sample itself. These limitations should be especially considered in case of pandemic outbreaks. In order to handle such a high number of patients a novel sample preparation system paired with modern blood sampling procedure is necessary. For this reason, a new device for blood sampling and preparation is designed containing an integrated microfluidic system. The fabrication is carried out by utilizing micro moulding of PDMS as well as micro milling. A first set of initial experiments as part of a first-generation study shows promising results. However, further steps of optimisation considering flow time and preparation cycle are part of a second-generation study.

    Abstract: Photobioelectrodes represent one of the examples where artificial materials are combined with biological entities to undertake semi-artificial photosynthesis. Here, an approach is described that uses reduced graphene oxide (rGO) as an electrode material. This classical 2D material is used to construct a three-dimensional structure by a template-based approach combined with a simple spin-coating process during preparation. Inspired by this novel material and photosystem I (PSI), a biophotovoltaic electrode is being designed and investigated. Both direct electron transfer to PSI and mediated electron transfer via cytochrome c from horse heart as redox protein can be confirmed. Electrode preparation and protein immobilization have been optimized. The performance can be upscaled by adjusting the thickness of the 3D electrode using different numbers of spin-coating steps during preparation. Thus, photocurrents up to ∼14 μA/cm2 are measured for 12 spin-coated layers of rGO corresponding to a turnover frequency of 30 e– PSI–1 s–1 and external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 0.07% at a thickness of about 15 μm. Operational stability has been analyzed for several days. Particularly, the performance at low illumination intensities is very promising (1.39 μA/cm2 at 0.1 mW/cm2 and −0.15 V vs Ag/AgCl; EQE 6.8%).

    Abstract: Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) is the standard biochemical marker for the diagnosis and treatment control of acromegaly and growth hormone deficiency (GHD). However, its limitations necessitate the screening for new specific and sensitive biomarkers. The elonginB/C-cullin5-SOCS-box-complex (ECS-complex) (an intracellular five-protein complex) is stimulated by circulating growth hormone (GH) and regulates GH receptor levels through a negative feedback loop. It mediates the cells’ sensitivity for GH and therefore, represents a potent new biomarker for those diseases. In this study, individual ECS-complex proteins were measured in whole blood samples of patients with acromegaly (n = 32) or GHD (n = 12) via ELISA and compared to controls. Hierarchical clustering of the results revealed that by combining the three ECS-complex proteins suppressor of cytokine signaling 2 (SOCS2), cullin-5 and ring-box protein 2 (Rbx-2), 93% of patient samples could be separated from controls, despite many patients having a normal IGF-1 or not receiving medical treatment. SOCS2 showed the best individual diagnostic performance with an overall accuracy of 0.93, while the combination of the three proteins correctly identified all patients and controls. This resulted in perfect sensitivity and specificity for all patient groups, which demonstrates potential benefits of the ECS-complex proteins as clinical biomarkers for the diagnostics of GH-related diseases and substantiates their important role in GH metabolism.

    Abstract: In this work, we developed a process to release the optical waveguides locally from the back side of a silicon-on-insulator wafer to enable a connection and an interaction between organic materials and photonic devices. The release procedure is realized by a local back-side etch followed by a chemical wet etch. Furthermore, certain process steps for a controlled removal of the buried oxide below the silicon device layer are introduced to protect the back end of line (BEOL) and to guarantee a compatibility with a photonic integrated circuit (PIC) technology. The presented approach gives perspective to a hybrid integration of organic materials into a PIC technology with a full BEOL for high-speed silicon-organic hybrid modulators and label-free biosensors.
