    Notes: Abstract Some general features of the behaviour of fields and particles around extreme (or nearly extreme) black holes are outlined, with an emphasis on their simplicity. In particular, simple solutions representing interacting electromagnetic and gravitational perturbations of an extreme Reissner-Nordström black hole are presented. As an application, the motion of the hole in an asymptotically uniform weak electric field is examined and “Newton's second law” is so explicitly verified for a geometrodynamical object.

    Notes: Abstract The175,176Lu(n,γ)176,177Lu reactions have been studied at the JINR Fast Pulsed Reactor IBR-30. Using a time-of-flight technique,γ-ray spectra on isolated resonances have been measured. From analysis of secondaryγ-transition intensities resonance spins have been deduced for both reactions studied. Statistical treatment of the secondaryγ-ray intensities has shown, that population of low-lying levels in the product nuclei176,177Lu fluctuate from resonance to resonance stronger than is expected on the basis of the statistical model. A hypothesis is advanced, that the increased fluctuation is a consequence of a statistical correlation between partial radiation widths for the transitions of intermediate energies and the reduced neutron widths.

    Notes: Abstract The paper describes the measurement of an electron density of the plasma generated by means of helical slow-down structures at microwave frequencies inside glass tubes of different diameters. Besides, the efficiency of an absorption of the microwave energy in a plasma column on the magnitude of a confining static magnetic field is given. Obtained results can be used for design of microwave sources of the plasma.

    Notes: Abstract Thermodynamic and structural properties of a hard spherocylinder fluid are calculated by means of the blip function theory byAndersen et al. and are compared with Monte Carlo simulation data. It is found that for spherocylinders of length-to-breadth ratio γ up to 3/2 the theory yields reasonably accurate results while for greater γ qualitative features of results may be correct only.

    Notes: Abstract The electronic absorption spectrum of chrysocolla, a silicate mineral of copper, has been studied at room and liquid air temperatures. The observed bands were satisfactorily explained as belonging to Cu2+ ion subjected to tetragonal and spin-orbit fields. A good fit between the theoretical and observed band positions was obtained for the following crystal field parameters:Dq=−1400 cm−1 Ds=−3000 cm−1 Dt=−800 cm−1 λ=−800 cm−1

    Notes: Abstract Magnetoresistivity, magnetic, susceptibility and high field magnetization measurements were performed on the amorphous Mn x Pd82–x Ge18 alloys for 1≦x≦7. These amorphous alloys were prepared by radio frequency (R. F.) sputtering using argon, depositing onto fused quartz substrates to a thickness of about 20 microns. The negative magnetoresistivity is approximately proportional to the square of the magnetization and the susceptibility obeying the Curie-Weiss law between 18 and 293 K. These results lead to the conclusion that a Kondo-type s-d exchange interaction exists in the amorphous Mn-Pd-Ge alloys and the d-d, spin correlation between magnetic atoms is, in general, weaker in the amorphous alloys than in the corresponding crystalline alloys.

    Notes: Abstract The present paper deals with a study of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) of protons of the crystal water of paramagnetic CoCl2.6 H2O. The measurements were carried out on powdered samples at room temperature, for values of the external magnetic field ranging from 0.3 to 1.0 T. The NMR signals of protons of the crystal water exhibit asymmetric shape which changes with the applied external magnetic field. We found that the second moment of the resonance line shows a linear dependence on the square of the induction of the externally applied magnetic field. Both the cause of the asymmetry of the NMR line of protons of the crystal water and the dependence of the second moment of the resonance line on the induction of external magnetic field are interpreted in the paper.

    Notes: Abstract The spectral distributions of the visible absorption and fluorescence emission under electron beam excitation of Eu3+-doped (Y2O3) and (YVO4) powders have been detected and analyzed. (Y2O3: Eu3+) has a cubicC crystal structure with a unit cell dimension a=10·61 Å. Its observed transitions from7 F 0 to many upper states have been recognized; the observed number of Stark components is in agreement with that based on theC 2 site symmetry of the Eu3+ ion in Y2O3. Eu3+-doped yttrium vanadate has a typical zircon tetragonal crystal structure with unit cell dimensions ofc=6·29 Å anda=7·11 Å. The observed transitions in (Eu3+: YVO4) have been identified and assigned in accordance with theD 2d site symmetry of the Eu3+ ion in this lattice.
