    Notes: From Wittig-reactions of thieno[2,3-b]thiophene-2,5-dicarboxaldehyde (1) and thieno-[3,2-b]thiophene-2,5-carboxaldehyde (4) with “mono-and bis Wittig-salts” of the benzene and thiophene series two series of isomeric poly(thienothiophene-2,5-diylvinylenearylenevinylene)s 3a - c and 5a - c, and some model compounds 7a - c and 8a - c were obtained. Wittig-reacaldehyde (11) with “mono-and bis-Wittig-salts” gave two series more of model compounds 10a - c, 12a - c, 13a, c, 14a, c. The structure of all compounds were confirmed by elemental analyses, IR, and electronic spectra, and those of the model compounds additionally by mass spectra, and in case of sufficient solubility by 1 H NMR spectra. The electrical conductivities of all compounds and the thermooxidative degradation of the polymers were investigated.

    Notes: The anionic polymerization of 1,3 and 1,4-diisopropenylbenzene (DIB) was found to be characterized by a rather low ceiling temperature and by rather strong differences in reactivity between the two double bonds. At low degrees of conversion the polymers formed are essentially linear and carry one pendant double bond per monomeric unit. Branching and crosslinking can occur only at higher conversion. 1,3-DIB can be copolymerized anionically with α-methylstyrene. Grafting reactions were carried out on polymer backbones with pendant unsaturated groups, using two different pathways. The occurence of coupling reaction can be avoided by a proper choice of experimental conditions.

    Notes: The characterisation of the oligomers of furfuryl alcohol was performed using 13C NMR spectroscopy and high resolution 1H NMR spectroscopy. A shift parameter scheme for the 13C shifts of the furan ring was devised and utilised for the assignment of the shifts of the oligomers. An analysis of the chemical composition of several furfuryl alcohol resings produced with different catalysts was performed with the aid of the assignments.

    Notes: Thionine (7-amino-3-imino-3-H-phenothiazine) undergoes reversible photobleaching when exposed to visible light in the presence of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) with the associated development of an electromotive force (emf). This photocreation between EDTA and thionine is inhibited in the presence of excess Mg+ +. Polyanions like DNA, RNA and polystyrenesulfonate also protect the dye from the EDTA induced photoreduction; this protective power of the polyanions depends on their nature and increases with their concentration. DNA, thought a weak chromotrope to form a metachromatic compound with thionine, protects the dye from photobleaching efficiently, presumbly due to the intercalation of the dye cations between base pairs of DNA; denatured DNA is relatively poorer in its ability to protect the dye and resembles RNA and polystyrenesulfonate in this respect. The results indicate that EDTA and thionine form a transient complex or are at least associated before electron transfer from EDTA to thionine in the excited-triplet state takes place.

    Notes: Phase distribution chromatography (PDC) is demonstrated to be a powerful method for the correct determination of narrow molecular weight distributions. This is shown by comparing the molecular weight distributions (MWD) of polystyrenes obtained from PDC measurements with those obtained by Baker-Williams fractionation and by gel permeation chromatography. Four problems are formulated and analyzed which are closely connected with the calculation of the MWD from a measured PDC-elution curve at temperatures below the theta point of the system. Thus, the theory of PDC outlined previously is tested.

    Notes: The ionic conductivity of polyoxyethylene- and polyoxypropylene-polyurethane networks containing sodium tetraphenylborate was studied as a function of temperature and salt concentration. The results can be rationalised in terms of free volume considerations. The fact that the WLF equation applies to the conductivity of these materials demonstrates that there exists a direct relationship between the ion conduction process and the viscoelastic properties of the networks.

    Notes: An unsaturated segmented polyurethane was prepared from cis-2-butene-1,4-diol, poly(ethylene glycol), butane-1,4-diol, and methylene bis(4-phenyl isocyanate). Graft copolymerization of N-vinylpyrrolidone onto the segmented polyurethane was studied using 2,2′-azoisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as initiator in DMF as solvent. The graft copolymers were isolated from the homopolymer and the ungrafted polyurethane by selective solvent extraction. The effect of reaction time, temperature, and of monomer and initiator concentrations on the degree of grafting was also investigated. The percent grafting was enhanced with increasing [AIBN] up to 40 mmol.dm-3, but then decreased at higher concentrations. An explanation based on complex formation between the monomer and the urethane linkages in polyurethane is suggested.

    Notes: The polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) was initiated with 1,1,2,2-tetraphenyl-1,2-diphenoxyethane (TPPA), 1,1,2,2-tetraphenyl-1,2-bis(trimethylsiloxy)ethane (TPSA), and 1,1,2,2-tetraphenyl-1,2-dicyanoethane (TPCA). The polymerization with these initiators is characterised by three steps: in the first period oligomers from MMA and initiator radicals are formed by primary radical termination. These telechelics are effective initiators for the further free radical polymerization of MMA. After consumption of the initiator radicals with increasing conversion a normal polymerization occurs.

    Notes: Lithium diisopropylamide in the presence of diisopropylamine initiates the polymerization of isoprene to form oligomers with one diisopropylamino end group. The molecular weight of the oligomers formed is strongly dependent on the mole ratio diisopropylamine/lithium diisopropylamide. For instance, more than 70% of the oligomers obtained have an average molecular weight of 1 000, provided the reaction is run with an initial mole ratio 1:2 of amine to amide. Reactivities of several allylamine derivatives including the oligomers with amino end groups were studied in regard to their ability as chain transfer agents in the anionic polymerization of isoprene. According to the 1H NMR analysis, these oligomers contain 90% 1,4- and 10% 3,4-enchainments.
