Notes: Abstract A radiochemical neutron activation analysis procedure was applied to the analysis of foods for As, Cr, Mo, Sb and Se. The elements are retained on an inorganic chromatographic resin of hydrated managanese dioxide while interfering elements are removed. Activities from Br, K, Na and P interferences are reduced by up to six orders of magnitude, and detection limits for food analysis are reduced by factors of 100–2000, compared with those normally found for instrumental neutron activation analysis. Detection limits for the foods analyzed are 0.1–0.3 ng/g for As and Sb and 1–10 ng/g for Cr, Mo and Se. Results are presented for various foods and several National Bureau of Standards Standard Reference Materials.

Notes: Abstract A study was undertaken to determine the concentration of selenium in whole blood, erythrocytes and plasma in samples obtained from three groups (each group consisting of one male and one female subject) given as a supplement a commercial product containing the element, together with vitamins A, C and E. Blood samples were obtained on one-day-a-week basis from each group, over a period of 75 days, both in the morning and in the afternoon, as part of a gastric function investigation, in which the subjects were given orange juice after fasting. Results indicate that the level of selenium in whole blood and its components increases with dose and time and that concentrations of the element are maintained for at least 45 days following cessation of supplementation. The influence of the supplement on some electrolytes such as Na, Cl, Br and Rb was also investigated.

Notes: Abstract A simple and sensitive radiochemical neutron activation analysis (RNAA) method has been developed for the simultaneous determination of mercury and selenium in biological materials. The radiochemical procedure is based upon the digestion of irradiated samples with sulphuric and nitric acids followed by subsequent extractions of mercury and selenium into toluene, first of mercury from 7.5 M H2SO4-0.01M HBr media and after of selenium from 7M H2SO4-1 M HBr media. After washing of the organic phases with similar media, the mercury bromide was back-extracted into 0.034M EDTA in 5% aqueous ammonia and the selenium bromide into 0.14M H2O2 in aqueous solution. The197Hg and the75Se were counted on a Ge(Li) detector. The precision and accuracy of the method was checked by analysing NBS Standard Reference Materials: orchard leaves and bovine liver.

Notes: Abstract As part of an examination of the cytostatic effects of 1,2-diarylethylenediamine-platinum(II)-complexes the contents of platinum and biologically essential trace elements of tumour tissue and different organs were determined. The activation analysis procedure — separation of32P, isolation of199Au and99Mo — is described. In the course of a pharmakokinetical experiment with tumourbearing rats (DMBA induced hormone-dependent tumours) the desired enrichment of the administered drug in the tumour tissue was found. Changes of the trace element level of tumour tissue were found for hormone-dependent MXT-mammary tumours on mice.

Notes: Abstract The paper offers a proposal for liver tissue sampling in hepatic diseases. The contents of Zn, Fe and Sb were selectively determined in, hepatocytes, regenerative nodes, fibrous tissue, carcinomatous foci and metastatic nodes. The results obtained indicated decrease of Zn and Fe contents in fibrous and malignant tissue and their increase in regenerative nodes, as compared to the values observed in hepatocytes of the same liver. Sb did not completely follow the pattern of Zn and Fe. Accordingly, each of the pathological structures was shown to have “its content” of trace elements differing from that in the neighbouring pathological tissue. For this reason, the representative sample must be a target type, taken from several points in liver and verified by histological findings.

Notes: Abstract Human placental tissue from 100 hospitalized deliveries were analysed for Ag, Al, As, Au, B, Ba, Br, Ca, Cd, Cl, Co, Cr, Cs, Cu, F, Fe, I, Hg, K, La, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, Rb, S, Sb, Sc, Se, Sn, Sr, Ti, V, W and Zn using a combination of pre-chemical separation of sodium with hydrated antimony pentoxide and instrumental neutron activation analysis. Boron and Si values were determined using prompt gamma-ray and fast-neutron techniques respectively. Analysis of NBS-SRM Bovine Liver 1577 and a ‘pooled standard’ placental tissue for 33 elements showed a good agreement with most coefficients of variation less than or equal to 15%, and recoveries of 91–104%. Symmetrical distributions, were obtained for all elemental placental values. Only Cd(−) and Zn(+) showed statistically significant correlations with birth weight, gestational age and placental weight. The influence of cigarette smoking is considered a major factor in producing elevated cadmium levels in the placental tissue of smokers and passive smokers, and hence lower birth weights.

Notes: Abstract We determined uranium in silicate materials such as standard rocks and a meteorite by radiochemical neutron activation analysis. After activation with a cadmium cover, samples were subjected to radiochemical separation of uranium immediately. The gamma-ray intensity of239U was measured with a planar type pure germanium detector system. Our data are mostly consistent with the literature or reported values. Compared with a non-destructive method, the present method was found to improve the sensitivity by at least a factor of ten. Several errors which might be involved in our RNAA procedures were examined and their degrees were evaluated.

Notes: Abstract The incorporation of Se and Te into liver, kidneys, heart, spleen, lung and small intestine after i.p. injections of Balby mice with seleno-cystine (CySe)2 and Na2TeO3 in the presence of Cd (as CdCl2), As (as As2O3) and Zn (as ZnSO4) has been studied. The change of contents of Co, Fe, Rb and Hg were determined in all investigated organs after injections with the above compounds. Instrumental neutron activation analysis was applied as the analytical method. It was found that a competitive interaction occurs between As and Se or Te. Similarly, this interaction has been observed between Se and Cd. The data obtained suggest that Cd has a higher competitive ability to displace Te than Zn and Se. Injection with the above compounds affects the contents of Fe, Co, Rb and Hg in all mice organs.

Notes: Abstract Skin tissue samples from 41 patients suffering from skin epitheliomas were analyzed by the PIXE method. Skin samples from the non-affected areas and blood serum were also analyzed for the same patients. The elements determined were K, Ca, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Br, Rb, and Pb. Their concentrations in the healthy skin and the serum were normal. The concentrations in the lesions were nearly the same for both basal cell and squamus cell epitheliomas (BCE and SCC) except for higher zinc and lower bromine values in the BCE samples. However, substantial differences were observed between the affected and non-affected skin.
